Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Why You Frontin

Why does K-Ros gots to bring us down like this:

Free-agent right-hander John Smoltz's agents are circulating recent video of the pitcher as well as his medical reports to clubs at the winter meetings.

One general manager says he believes that Smoltz for the first time might be willing to leave the Braves, for whom he has pitched since 1988.

The Braves are waiting to determine if Smoltz is sufficiently recovered from shoulder surgery before offering him a contract, creating the opportunity for other teams to bid.

The Red Sox would have definite interest in Smoltz on a one-year deal, a major-league source said. So might the Yankees, Dodgers and any other team in need of starting pitching.

Smoltz (and his agent) seems to do this every time he's a free agent or his contract is up for renewal. All I can say is this has got to be a drive-up-the-cost ploy by his agent or a get the Braves to hurry up and sign him gambit. I mean, yes, he had one healthy session on the mound, but is that enough for ANY club to throw a bunch of money at him and get him to leave the Braves.

The only way Smoltz isn’t a Brave is if the team doesn’t offer him a contract at all or completely lowballs him.

I’m probably going to catch a lot of flack for saying this, but Smoltz is starting to get a little too dramatic in his old age.

by beeniez on Dec 9, 2008 7:39 PM EST reply actions

as long as Smoltz is able to pitch he will pitch for the Braves. Count on it. He ain’t going nowhere.

John Smoltz

Smoltz will get a better offer once dust settles and the Braves have a better idea of what’s left in the budget. The contract will probably have nice escalators tied to appearances and starts, atop a solid mid-seven figure base, with options for 2010 and 2011.

As far as I’m concerned, John Smoltz is now competing for the title of most fondly remembered Braves’ pitcher ever. He has passed Glavine, although I was in the park for game six in ‘95. He has passed Spahn, who I’m old enough to remember well. His only remaining competition is Greg Maddux. Right now I give Smoltz the edge because he’s been with us longer, he never played for anyone else, and he has been the very best postseason pitcher who ever put on a Braves uniform.

I hope we sign him to a two or three year deal, because his last game for the Braves really should be a World Series appearance.

John Smoltz is my favorite Brave ever.

But Maddux is my favorite pitcher. The day we got Maddux, he became my favorite baseball player. I proceeded to collect every baseball card of his I could get. All the Ken Griffey Jr’s in the world couldn’t stop me from amassing my collection of Maddux’s. I ended up with over 60, and the memories of that will always make Maddux my favorite. I hated Tom Glavine cause he stole my name, and Smoltz was great, but I never really liked him. Which I guess brings me to my point, the big three will always be remembered the way I saw them when I was 10, and Smoltz can’t do anything to change that.

man fuck smoltz

i’m getting sick of his shit already. he’s acting like he hasn’t come off a million surgeries. the braves have been damned good to him over the years, letting him dictate how and when he pitches. now he pulls this shit? fuck that.

Hm, yeah, if I was out of a job...

the last thing I would do would be to send out my resume to prospective employers, especially when they’re conveniently assembled in one place.

Duh. Hello?

Sheesh. The last thing I want to see is my man in a different uni. But please. You’re going to tell me you’d go to a job fair and sit around, not handing out your resume to showcase your talent and get a job for something you think you’re well qualified and still able to do?

actually, i’ve heard you get the pension if you play in like…17 games or something like that

You can get a partial pension for pretty much any time you play, that’s true, but to get the full one you have to have 10 years. There have been cases, John Cangelosi with the Rockies and Mike Mordecai with the Marlins come to mind, where a guy working for the team, Cangelosi in the front office and Mordy as a manager, were put on the roster at the end of a season so they could gain the necessary time to earn their full pension.

Quote
John Smoltz

He has never been ineffective. Since his 12-start 5.48-ERA debut in 1988, Smoltz’s single season-high ERA is 4.14. He’s missed one full season and significant parts of others, but he has never, even last year, been a pitcher who hurts you on the mound. Like (Randy) Johnson he gives you the best choice: he’s going to be good, or he’s not going to be pitching. I would sign Smoltz to whatever kind of creative conract it took to get me an option on his services in 2010.

I can’t remember who wrote those exact words since I had screen capped it, but it’s pretty much true. Smoltz has never been ineffective. I want to see Smoltzie back as much as everyone else does, but earlier last season, I said “same song and dance” in regards to the Manny trade-debacle, and finally, he did get traded. So dare I not, say the same thing in regards to the perennial “Smoltz is leaving” words, this time.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Dec 10, 2008 8:42 AM EST reply actions

I could be way off base here

But I believe this is just his agent gauging the market in order to set a price for negotiations with the Braves. Sure, if some other team came calling and offered up a ridiculous contract why would Smoltzy NOT consider it. Bottom line though, I highly doubt he’ll pull a Hampton on us.

by scstrato on Dec 10, 2008 9:38 AM EST reply actions

Smoltz's agent thinks about $$$

He is gonna do everything to get the Braves to give him more money. Everything. Smoltz isn’t out there talking to the Mets and the Phillies, his agent is just distributing the video to put pressure on the Braves, because he gets a percentage of the contract, and he wants it to be quite nice.

by someguy917 on Dec 10, 2008 11:22 AM EST reply actions

Yes, I'm sure SHE does...

I think that’s what an agent is hired by the athlete to do. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

However, after meeting Molly the other night, I do not get the impression that she’s the greedy money vacuum you’re implying her to be, a la Scott Boras; she’ll get out there and bust balls for her clients, but she pampers them as well. You can read more about her here:

by Lizziebeth on Dec 10, 2008 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't say SHE was greedy

That is the nature of the job. To feed HER kids, SHE has to try to get Smoltz more money, and this is the way SHE does it. SHE is doing everything in HER power. I never said SHE was greedy. This is just HER tactic.

While it is an interesting tidbit that she is a woman, it doesn’t make me wrong. This is the English lanugage, if you do not know the gender of a person he is the proper pronoun to use. Much like in Spanish, where El is used for unspecified gender, or Ellos, for a group that contains a single male. If you don’t understand the vernacular, don’t try to use it against people.

by someguy917 on Dec 10, 2008 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

if she gets smoltz a 1 million dollar contract, assuming her cut is 5%, thats more than 4 times what i make in a year.

I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.

by bigjoe on Dec 10, 2008 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, the ‘unknown gender he’ is increasingly coming under fire. As we become more and more concerned with sexism, using ‘he’ when the sex of who you’re speaking about is unknown is becoming less and less acceptable. What’s coming more into vogue is the use of ‘he or she’ or the more common, albeit slightly confusing, ‘they’.
This isn’t to say someguy917 is wrong to use ‘he’; in fact, like he said, by the traditional definition he’s totally right. In fact, in a sport dominated by men, the assumption that Smoltz’s agent is a man is a perfectly reasonable one and, again like he said, in no way detracted from his point.

by cbwilk on Dec 10, 2008 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Chill, I never once said anyone was wrong...

I’m just impressed with Molly and her being a woman in such a male-dominated field. You’re taking my comments way too personally. But thanks for the “lanugage” lesson. I’ll try to remember it/them the next time I come across “lanugage”. I’m mostly familiar with grammar, sorry.

I never used the words, “You were wrong”. I just got the impression you didn’t know much about Smoltz’s agent and was giving you, and anyone else who didn’t know, an introduction to her. I wasn’t giving a grammar lesson. I only capitalized it once to make it stand out, and find it interesting that it made such an impression! Also, I did not say you said she was greedy, I only said you were “implying”.

by Lizziebeth on Dec 10, 2008 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'm offended by everyone getting so offended.

Just to clarify, I never hit the keyboard with the the intention of hurting someone’s feelings (so I never comment on youtube videos). I just don’t like it when people assume that I am going around stepping on people’s toes for the fun of it. I’m just doing what I’m told. I don’t have a qualm with lizzie. Just general frustration.

On another note entire, Turncoast Tommy said its Braves or retirement. He just went up several points in my book.

further grammat session

technically you can’t use “they”… unless u maintain the plural throughout the sentence, or better yet the writing. he or she is appropriate… technically u could even use it, although it fits grammatically so long as people are offended at being called a thing

"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."

He does this shit on purpose

It creates a hostile fan uproar against the organization, and it’s meant to be seen, to give the organization just one more reason to hurry up and make an offer. He’s not going to the Mets – he’s white too old!

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
