What if the dominos fall just right?
Fangraphs has an article up regarding a potential 2009 Braves rotation. Marc Hulet does a lot of speculating, the signing of Burnett / Smoltz returning to the rotation / Glavine not being re-signed, but it's a good read none the less.
I've said it before but I'm one that agrees with the prediction that Smoltz will return to the rotation if at all possible. I'm also hopeful we cut ties with Glavine. Love the guy, but I feel he's lost a little too much to be competitive. Another question mark is whether Burnett could throw 190 IP's. I'm sure that one will spur a lot of debate.

hello
How about : Burnett,Vasquez,Smoltz,Hanson and spot start the fifth spot until someone steps up.
Did you watch Campillo pitch last year?
And Smoltz is not going to be a starter. I think he even said that. He will be a reliever. Why would you start the year with Hanson in the majors? See how he does in AAA, then if he is good(which I am sure he will be) and we need some help, bring him up.
Burnett, Vasquez, JJ, Campillo, and Morton/Reyes. That is what our 2009 opening day rotation will be if we get Burnett.
Wrong!!
Burnett,Jon Garland,Javy,Jair,Campillo, Smoltz will be in the pen..Lets not get caught up again in the whole Smoltz and Glavine in the rotation..Would perfer Glavine in the rotation and Smotlz out of the pen…..Burnett, Garland, Javy, Jair, Glavine..Campillo in the pen
I WILL FUCKING STAB YOU IN THE DICK IF YOU MENTION JON GARLAND AGAIN.
I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.
no he really is making a good pt… although i never condone dick stabbing… Jon Garland should not be an option… and more importantly he would not be our #2 guy… JJ is miles ahead of Jon Garland (if it is early JJ)…we have talked ad nauseum about how poor Garland is… Also if we tack on his salary that leaves no money for an OF bat.. which is far more critical. than adding a third P… and then further u say we should sign Glavine… i like GLavine as much as th enext guy but it would cost another 5M at least, prob more like 8M… which now gives us absolutely no money for roster increases and arbitration… and by signing all these guys u are blocking our minor league guys… like Hanson… or a guy no one has brought up Todd Redmond (he could play a part in our 09 season)
"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."
ill follow with some stats the useless ones first… an ERA of 4.47 and a WHIP of 1.385 and W/L record of 106/89… further more i strike out about the same number of guys Garland does and i dont pitch. he has one sub 4 ERA season as a starter. His best assets are that he doesnt walk guys and he can throw a fair amount of innigns… but if we are gonna spend 12M i think we can fidn soemthing better….like me … ill pitch as the 5th starter i only ask for 3M a year with an infinite club option (like Tim wakefield).. and a date with one of the braves cheerleaders
"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."
The pitcher you described sounds alot like Vazquez. ERA of 4.67 WHIP of 1.32 and a W/L record of 127-129. He has one sub 4.40 ERA in the past 5 years. His best assets is he throws 200 innings a year and he costs 11.5 mill a year, plus some prospects. I’m just saying….lol
i hate having to defend vazquez, but…these are career numbers
vazquez: 7.99 K/9, 2.39 BB/9, 3.34 K/BB, 1.27 WHIP, 3.93 FIP
garland: 4.71 K/9, 2.95 BB/9, 1.60 K/BB, 1.38 WHIP, 4.73 FIP
explain to me how those 2 lines of stats are similar. one is not good, one is…well, not bad

I’m not denying Vazquez is a strikeout pitcher and can be dominant at times, but I simply used the same stats he used to show why Garland wasn’t worth it and compared them to Vazquez. They are disturbingly similar. Who would I take? Vazquez every time just because even at 32 he has the potential. Can I say he still has potential at 32???
yeah…when someone uses ERA and W/L record to talk about a pitcher’s worth, you should hit them in the head with a hammer and ignore it
I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.
I wouldn’t go that far as to hitting anyone with a hammer. I’m a peaceful guy…lol. On the other hand, there have been successful pitchers who have had peripheral stats such as the ones you showed for Garland. Glavine’s career 5.32 K/9 1.74 K/BB 1.32 WHIP
garland’s 29. his peripherals aren’t supposed to look the same as a guy who’s in his decline phase.
glavine’s 29 year old year, his FIP was a run and a half lower than garland’s.
I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.
yeah, those were his career numbers, but his numbers this season were right in line with them. what i’m saying is, while their career numbers are similar…garland’s numbers in his prime are comparable to tom glavine’s which includes glavine’s decline phase. when garland’s career ends, and you include HIS decline phase numbers, they won’t look anything at all like glavine’s
I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.
Oh, slam.
That guy must really suck, and/or you’re at least 2 growlers in…I’ve never even said that to a guy (mostly I’m just not that creative)! Love it.
Where did Jon Garland even come into this?
Seriously, I think that is the first time Jon Garland has been mentioned on this blog. No sources, absolutely no interest, but you come in and say he will be our number 2 starter next year? I hope you aren’t serious.
July 2009 and 2010
You may be right—but if we sign A.J. then by July we might have the following rotation: Burnett, Vasquez, JJ, Hanson and Morton/Reyes/Parr with Redmond and Medlen knocking on the door.
What I really like about this scenario is that the Braves have a chance to have a great rotation in 2010….
