Greg Maddux to announce retirement
ESPN says he will retire on Monday. Part of me hopes Smoltz and Glavine never throw another pitch so these three can go into the Hall together.

I agree....
with the “Mets suck” part.
The “Smoltz never throwing another pitch” part? Get thee away from me, Satan!

Wow
I will truly miss watching this man pitch. He proved that pitching is more of a mind game than a physical one.
As much as it pains me to say it, I would have liked to see Glavine & Smoltz retire with him. What a great HOF class that would be!

I wonder how long he’ll be retired before some team tries to bring him on as a pitching coach.

This will be a sad day
But it was inevitable. I think it’s safe to say he’s THE greatest pitcher of our generation. So long Maddog, hope to see you in a coaches uni real soon (preferably with the Braves).

I'd like to know what someone's argument would be
For NOT voting for him.
by buzzdeadwax on Dec 5, 2008 6:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Keep in mind
- One writer didn’t vote for Pedroia at all
- Three writers voted for Edison Volquez
There were also several reports of writers threatening NOT to vote for Ripken and Gwynn just out of spite.

Who could have a grudge against Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn?

believe it or not, some writers believe that NO PLAYER should be unanimously inducted under the logic of “babe ruth wasn’t”

It's like the story "Twelve Angry Men"
Just wanted to throw a monkey wrench out there to slow things down and discuss. The last voter probably didn’t vote for Ripken and Gwynn, but there was no discussion to why.

Numbers
I think the Braves should have one night when the retire the number of Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux together. You would be hard-pressed to argue that they were not the best pitching threesome of all time.

the Orioles had apretty good threesoem in the 60s…Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar….i dont think they were better than our three but i just though id throw out three guys that were pretty good in 1970 along with pat dobson they are the only foursome in the live ball era to have 4 20 game winners in the same rotation

ESPN did one of their “this guy is really, really, really” good montages for maddux. i gave my TV a standing ovation.
he had a CAREER K:BB of 3.3. he AVERAGED more than 200 innings a year for his career. he had more career shutouts than balks. his career ERA is a full run lower than the league average during his career.
his best season was 1994. that year, 24 of his 25 starts were quality. he averaged – AVERAGED – 8 innings and one walk a start. he allowed, on average. a home run a month.
or maybe his best season was 1995, when he went 26/28 in QS. he pitched more innings than he did in 1994, yet he allowed less hits and walked less men. oh, and he struck out more guys too. his WHIP was 8 tenths lower than it was in 1994
in each season, he had more complete games than hit batters. twice as many more. combined over the 2 seasons, intentional walks made up more than 10% of his overall total. and uh, he had more shutouts in either year than he had intentional walks. combined.
over a 7 year stretch, his highest WHIP was 1.049. farewell to greg maddux, the best pitcher of the modern era, and one of the greatest of all-time. we will ALL miss you.

well in Ken Griffey Jr Baseball for the N64 (which i still play religiously) Maddux is 22 for 22 (he has started 22 games and has 22 wins)… with an ERA of .54 and a WHIP of .35… he has 299Ks and 2 BB (both were intentional, i hit the guy that hit a HR off me in his next PA)… he has 12 Shutouts and 3 perfect games
so clearly real life Maddux is a bum because he cant put up the same nbrs i can in a video game… HA!!
and that doesnt even inlcude the fact that he is averagin an RBI a game

yawn. i was doing that with him in all-star baseball 1999. AND HE WAS OLD AND WASHED UP THEN.

Great stuff.
The stat that blew my mind was after a poor outing (I think 2 years ago?) his career ERA rose to over 3.00 for the first time in a decade. Unreal.
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

As great as his stats are
The stories are always 10x better.
Mazzone talking about a time when the Braves played the Yankees, and Maddux was pitching to Jorge Posada, with runners on second and third with two outs. Mazzone asked Maddux what he was going to do, and he said that if he got to a 3-1 count he would walk him, but he was sure that he could get him to pop to third on three pitches.
Three pitches later, Posada popped out to third base, to end the inning and threat.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

We watched history.
Make sure to pass on the stories of the Mad dog to your children and grands. The man was perfection on and off the field. I hope he becomes a coach in the braves system but from the what’s been written about him wanting to stay on the west coast to play, I would think the same would apply with coaching. Either way I wish him nothing but success in the future.

That commercial cracks me up 10 years later. Those guys were hilarious. My favorite part is Glavine yelling at Maddux to “STEP INTO IT!!” while cracking his stomach with the stick. Pure comedy gold.

i just want to see if im being ignorant.. currently in an argument with an individual who thinks Nolan RYan is head and shoulders above all other pitchers and refuses to acknowledge Maddux as one of the top 10 pitchers of all time simply becuase as he says Maddux was “crafty”… i have the right to punch him in the head if i see him in person correct?
