What about Hoffman?
I don't know how much he would cost, but he would be a nice addiction to our pen. I understand that we have a very talented bullpen when they are all healthy, but they have problems staying healthy. Yes, Mike Gonzalez finished last season great as the closer, but Hoffman is still the best ever. I think he would be a nice addition. But it is unlikely we even go after him.
Go Braves!

Even if the Braves did go after him which they won’t they wouldn’t offer him top dollar or the chance to be the everyday closer. My estimate is that he will get around $6-8 mil. for a one year contract. The Braves might go $4 mil. on him but that would be it. If they did sign him then they run into the problem of to many people in the bullpen. With Soriano, Gonzalez, and Smoltz plus Hoffman you wouldn’t be able to keep them all happy. You could trade one of the younger guys mid-season but then at the end of the year when Hoffman and Smoltz both retire what do you do.
do we have to start a new thread for every free agent that theres a slight chance we may have the smallest bit of interest in?
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
YOU ACT LIKE WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A POSTSEASON RUN OR SOMETHING
Last time I checked, the season is over. Speculating about FAs is pretty much the only worthwhile discussion at this point. If you don’t like it … go get your online reading/perusing done elsewhere.
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."
it's not that bad of an idea
What happened to our pen last year? They all were hurt for pretty much the whole year. What if that happens again? You want more Tavarez? Or more rookies who aren’t ready for the bigs yet?
You don't understand the problem
We had a good bullpen last year. Everyone will yell and scream, but it wasn’t Boyer’s fault he sucked. When you have no starting pitcher who can make 200 innings a season the bullpen gets overworked. And when an overworked bullpen loses its closer and primary setup man, that high workload gets spread over just a handful of guys (Bennett, Boyer, Ohman). Don’t expect the same results this year.
