Jonathan Sanchez
Is available.
Lacking a potent offense, the Giants are flawed themselves. Having resisted offers of corner infielders for Jonathan Sanchez, general manager Brian Sabean hinted that he might at least listen to trade proposals involving the left-hander, now that Johnson's aboard.
"We're going to have to be open-minded," Sabean said, although he repeated that he wouldn't obtain a player who's eligible for free agency after 2009.
Waiting until Spring Training also could be an option for the Giants, who'll know by then whether left-hander Noah Lowry will have sufficiently recovered from two forearm surgeries. If Lowry's fit, Sanchez would be bumped from the rotation into the bullpen and could be expendable.
I'd love to get him. And if Lowry does come back, I would think the price would be relatively reasonable. Any thoughts?

I’d love to get Sanchez. Get peripherals, young, cheap, may improve the control enough to be truly dominant.

He’s an Oliver Perez clone. Not a big fan.

Perez v Sanchez
2006-2008 FIPs for Perez: 5.61, 4.35, and 4.68.
2006-2008 FIPs for Sanchez: 4.17, 4.76, and 3.85.
Plus, Sanchez is younger, cheaper, and doesn’t have a history of injuries.

hey
It seems to me that the Braves lack of moves is a sign that the crop of talent is coming sooner than expected.Heyward,Hanson,Merek,Shafer, and others are on theyre way!!It would only benefit them to work with better coaching staff and get around a higher quality of players to coach them also.Shaffer would already be here if it wasnt for the 50 game suspension,Hanson cant get ant better in the minors,Hayward needs the coaching of Pendleton (which he is the perfect fit for Heyward). As for the others, the Braves need to find out if they can produce at a higher level.

THE "crop of talent"
Check ya spelling. Check ya facts.

Hanson didn’t pitch much above AA, Heyward hasn’t played above high A…while Hanson does have a shot to make the club out of spring training, Heyward does not. Just because we weren’t willing to deal those guys doesn’t mean they’ll be in Atlanta in 2009.
Though I do agree with Dave O’Brien, that perhaps part of the reason Frank Wren doesn’t want to commit for a guy like Adam Dunn for 3 years is so he doesn’t block our OF prospects another year or two from now.

if you mention this one more time, i command you to stab yourself in the eye with a nail file.
also, you spelled schafer differently twice. incorrectly both times. awesome. the only name you DIDN’T misspell at least once was hanson.

ha
The most egregious part of his post doesn’t involve bad spelling. Its the part about Pendleton being just what Heyward needs.
Because this is the same Pendleton that hasn’t been able to teach patience to any of our hitters. Its telling that our two best hitters are coached by their dads. Two of our most promising prospects in recent years went from guys who were free swingers who could hit mistakes a long way to complete hackers who ground into double plays and can’t lay off sliders low and away. Kelly Johnson has been told to be more agressive, which isn’t his nature.
Heyward already seems to be displaying good patience and plate discipline, so the last thing he needs is a hitting coach who’s only advice seems to be more agression.

if they still want a corner infielder, who are we gunna give them? kotchman? any offer we make will be bested by another team, it would seem to me.

This is probably right, unfortunately
The Braves need to find a trading partner with a dearth of young pitching. By no means is that SF.

huh?
Wouldn’t they want a team with a wealth of young pitching talent? Which would be SF.

couldn’t it be argued quite successfully that the giants have the BEST supply of young pitching?

No
As I see it, the Braves have better pitching prospects to deal than position prospects (I’m assuming Heyward, Freeman, and one of Schafer/Gorkys are untouchable). So, find a team that doesn’t have enough pitching and spin one/two of those guys over.

much more depth in position prospects. deal from our strength (minor league outfielders)
by jeg on Dec 28, 2008 8:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Disagree
In terms of minor league OFers, Heyward’s untouchable IMO, and so is either Schafer or Gorkys. That leaves the other CF and…..
(chirp)
Sickels has 12 pitchers in his ATL Top 19, BA has 6 in their Top 10, and BP has 5 in their Top 10. And that doesn’t even include guys like Jo-Jo or Morton. That’s the position of strength I’d deal from.

… Cody Johnson, to a lesser extent Brandon Jones, and further down Josh Anderson. Hanson and Teheran arent going anywhere. Medlen and Kimbrel are likely relievers and thus the return isn’t particularly high. That would leave Rohrbough and Locke as the two most desirable options to other teams and neither of them is a player valuable enough to build a deal around. If you dealt either Rohrbough or Locke, there would exist a glaring lack of near ready starting pitching in the next couple years. As of right now, Morton and Reyes will be in our starting rotation this year so unless your adding to or upgrading the rotation they aren’t expendable. The ML pitching staff is NOT deep either. Add pitching, don’t subtract
by jeg on Dec 29, 2008 4:11 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A few responses:
1. “further down Josh Anderson”
How you could trade Anderson without creating a significant hole in CF for 2009? (I also don’t think Anderson has much trade value at all, but perhaps I’m wrong.)
2. “Hanson and Teheran arent going anywhere. Medlen and Kimbrel are likely relievers and thus the return isn’t particularly high.”
Agreed on Hanson and Kimbrel. Think Teheran would absolutely be available for trade. Think many underestimate Medlen’s value as a potential starter.
3. “That would leave Rohrbough and Locke as the two most desirable options to other teams”
And Delgado, and DeVall, and Osuna, and maybe even somebody like Parr. IMO.
4. “As of right now, Morton and Reyes will be in our starting rotation this year so unless your adding to or upgrading the rotation they aren’t expendable.”
I thought we were talking about adding Sanchez, no?
5. “Add pitching, don’t subtract.”
I guess I don’t see it in those terms, but reasonable minds can disagree. I see it more as deal from depth (young minor-league pitching) for a position of need (young major-league pitching). But reasonable minds can disagree. And I’ll acknowledge I’m a bit biased. I think pitching prospects are great to deal as they always draw a market because they’re young, shiny, and usually throw hard. Even though they often don’t work out. If a team can identify which ones will succeed and which ones bear greater risk, it’s a great arbitrage play. Trade 1-2 minor league arms for a major league arm that’s made it through.

1) since when is anderson starting? the prevailing logic is that blanco is starting with RANDOM MYSTERY FREE AGENT in left
2) wren has stated teheran is untouchable. he apparently learned his lesson from feliz
3) none of those guys with the possible exception of devall are as good as rohrbough and locke
4) truth
5) pitchers have a much higher rate of flaming out than hitters. if they get the yips, its over. SEE: bailey, homer

blanco’s OBP puts him ahead of anderson for the CF job in 09’ and lets be honest, they are forth or fifth outfielders. There isnt a consensus that Medlen can be a ML starter and thus his value is marginalized. Rohrbough and Locke are the most desirable of our pitching prospects not deemed untouchable by the organization because of their upside and the fact that they are above rookie ball. Your right about Osuna having value but he is below the two I mentioned. Parr should never make 30 starts for a .500 or better team. He is just a fill-in guy. Like Teheran, Delgado isnt far enough along to have good present value relative to his potential. Also, DeVall cant be traded yet except as a player to be named later. In my opinion, Locke, Prado, and possibly a reliever like Acosta to SF for Sanchez would be a resonably acceptable trade. Sanchez is no sure thing however, slight frame and lack of a history of high inning totals make him an injury risk

i was posting in response to saying we needed to find a team that needs young pitching and being that we need to add pitching, it is unlikely we will find a trade partner with a team with a need for young pitching

they’re looking for an infielder of some sort. if they get a middle IF, renteria will play the other position. if they get a corner IF, sandoval will play the other position.

Prado needs to be in a deal with SF for Sanchez. We certainly would have to send at least one other player, likely two, but this is a good opportunity to sell high on Prado
by jeg on Dec 29, 2008 4:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
but they need a thumper – an RBI producer, not a plus offensive middle infielder. i don’t see them biting for kelly. remember, they’re batting bengie molina cleanup.

thats true but they wont be batting him 4th next year most likely.. IMHO… Sandoval will msot liekly bat 4th nxt year

if you think teheran could be had in a trade then you REALLY need to reassess your baseball acumen as well as your understanding of the Braves’ philosophy of minor league players, especially pitchers: get them through AA and get the stats high and THEN trade.
right now, teheran is as close to untouchable in the Braves’ organization as anyone.
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Dec 30, 2008 2:40 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t disagree that they’re not inclined to trade Teheran, but that whole philosophy nonsense doesn’t sound right. They traded Feliz last year and just traded Santos Rodriguez for Javy Vazquez. I don’t think the level of play has much to do with their willingness to trade a guy.
