Do we still have $40 million to spend?
So if we have $40 million left to spend, what would be your choice on how to spend the money?
I say resign Smoltz for around $10 million. I don't think with his injury that this would be low balling it. Maybe even throw some incentives into the deal.
Next, sign Sheets. Maybe 2 years $25million.
Next, resign Ohman. I think he'd take $3-4 million per seeing as how it would double last year's salary.
Finally, sign Dunn. I know Wren is looking for a right handed stick, but 40 HR is 40HR, I don't care what side of the plate it comes from. I'm hoping it would only take about $13 million seeing as how there doesn't seem to be much interest.
This is based purely on free agents. I don't even want to get into trades, b/c there's too much involved. And it still leaves us a few million for other things. This leaves out Glavine, though maybe he'd sign a low ball contract with incentives. It's pretty much Atlanta or retire so if he wants to play he'll give them a deal.
So what would you do? How far off am I on my salary projections? Anybody you'd rather see instead?

that is pretty much what i’d do with the free agents out there
Smoltz is going to be signed for as much as he wants
Dunn just like you said 40 HR is 40 HR!! take it and win some games with him
Sheets huge risk here, but its one i’m willing to take
i would also make a run @ Manny i know its a long shot but hey might as well make an offer, cant sign him if you dont make the offer
i would like to see Ohman back in the Braves Uniform he gave us some good games and with him our bullpen will be even stronger
i think a 1 year 3, 4, 5 mil deal sounds fair for Glav i love the guy and i cant wait to see him performing again, the year he had, thats not the way to end he’ll be back
no, we don’t have any money to spend. santa claus and his reindeer broke into the liberty media offices and stole their budget sheets for the braves, and therefore, no money can be spent

Wasn’t Ben Affleck in that movie?
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

If I had $40 Million to spend I would..
Sign Garland and Sheets. That would leave us with a decent rotation with depth. Sheets, Garland, Javier, Jair, Morton. Then trade for Maggalio or Carlos Lee. THATS IT!

Haha, this like the 3rd stupid ass comment I’ve seen him make and notice how he never shows up again in the same post.
JON GARLAND SUCKS! He is a sorry excuse for a contact pitcher. His ERA is 4.90 and it took one of the best teams in the MLB to get him to 14 wins, he gave up 237 hits in less than 200 innings and only 90 K’s. Worst of all this is a fairly typical season for him. He will only decline as he approaches and passes the age of 30.
I appreciate the fact you are always looking to read my comments. Very flattered! No need for that comment. Behave yourself.
The reason why I say Garland is becuase there’s no one else out there. Peavy is gone, Burnett is gone, Wolf is not the answer, that Chinese or japanses guy, we dont know what he is all about. I perfer to load my rotation with veteran pitchers. Thanks for reading again, Happy New Year son

Chinese or Japanese? Seriously? There are what, like four Chinese players in all of professional American baseball? How can you make that mistake?
I know the Yankees and Red Sox have at least a couple each. Every one of them gets a baseball card cause they’re with those teams and they’re from China, and it’s totally pointless since they’ll never even make it to a full season A ball team so I can get them to sign them.
yeah, i meant more along the lines of the majors…now that you mention it, i do remember the random chinese signings that were a huuuuuuuuuuge deal there. if i remember correctly, we might have gotten one…and a couple koreans maybe?

Garland
If Smoltz looks good for a starting spot in the rotation then I say Garland not’s horrible. If you can get him for a 1 yr/3-4 million deal then pick him up but only a one year deal.
Exactly
To a certain point you can’t blame him. As outsiders examining a league we don’t work in or play in we are far more critical of Garland than say his agent or even league GM’s (though not unjustly so). In this business it’s almost impossible to sign a 29 year old starting pitcher who showed 200 inning durability and by some act of God won 14 games, to a measly 1-year deal. There is always a certain level of reverence shown to this type pitcher, no matter how scary the warning signs are.
that was a surprisinlgy calm response… no one got stabbed or beaten or insulted (excpet Garland and he deserves it)…
needless to say im dissapointed… do u have a new years resolution the rest of us should know about?
"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."
i thought it might revolve around kindness u have told nayone they were stupid in a couple of days (except the mentally challenged indiviudal he beleives we should promote everyone to themajor leagues) i am gettin worried… where will i look for guidance, as it says in the good blog WWBJD

i have more important things on my mind than the braves right now.
1) UFC show saturday. 2/3 of my guys lost. whoops
2) ravens game yesterday. WIN and playoffs.
3) northwestern bowl game tonight
4) K-1 NYE show on wednesday in the very early morning
5) ravens playoff game sunday
6) 360 taking up a ton of my time
yes, i am a complete loser

I don't like Garland at all
but if Penny just got a 1yr/5 mil deal then Garland might just take what he gets after another month or two. Most likely he gets a 2 yr/12 mil type deal but if you can sign him for one year then its not horrible.
It’s beginning to look like this may be true. For the life of me, I can’t fathom why we’d trade for Nick Swisher over signing Dunn.
Flexibility. Dunn is not that much better of a baseball player than Swisher, but is older, will require at least as long of a committment, possibly more, and will cost more. I mean, Swisher is probably a 3 WAR left fielder for the next 3-4 years, possibly more. He’s set to earn $20-30 million over that period for those 9-12 wins. That’s a pretty nice asset to own, certainly better than paying Adam Dunn $12 million for the next 3-4 years. Dunn and Swisher are comparable left fielders, Swisher adds versatility, a younger age, a cheaper contract, and more flexibility.
This
And, both probably are Old Player Skill risks, so every year counts (in age and contract length).

what is Old Player Skills risks?

Here you go
When in doubt about a sabre concept, USS Mariner is always a good place to start. Here’s a post discussing the risks in connection with Richie Sexson. Enjoy.

WE prob. have like 29 mil. left
We traded prospects that made no money for Vazquez remember he makes like 11M a year and the 40M was before we acquired him. And I think Smoltz might be willing to cut us a little home town discount,10M sounds decent but maybe lower, he made 14M last year.
But didn’t they have between $40 -$50 million? So if we take the upper level, they’d still have roughly $40 million left to spend. If Smoltz takes lower than $10, they could easily resign Glavine. I wouldn’t mind a rotation of Sheets, Smoltz, Vasquz, Jurrjens, Glavine with Campillo in long relief and spot starter and Reyes and Morton moved back down or traded for a stick.
I don’t know that trading Reyes or Morton would necessarily mean selling low. People realize they are young and both have show flashes of brilliance. They’ve been mentioned in many trade talks this winter. It’s not like it’s news.

I did some pretty detailed calculations, where I tabbed the Braves for half of Tim Hudson’s $6.5 million salary, budgeted $20 million for six arbitration cases (Johnson, Kotchman, Diaz, Francoeur, Gonzalez, Infante), and paid nine players at minimum salary for $500,000 apiece. When I was done, I came out with $34.5 million left to spend, to fill the last five roster spots. (I can post more detailed calculations on request.)
Now, that assumes a $100 million payroll, and I’m not so sure that the Braves are going to walk the walk when it comes to spending this winter. Two months ago, president Terry McGuirk told David O’Brien that the Braves’ plans were “full speed ahead,” but there’s been quite a bit of economic change in the eight weeks or so since then. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the Braves come in below, if not significantly below, $100 million.
