What are you looking forward to this season?
Well with everything that has been said on this board lately about our signings (or non-signings) and the doom and gloom that has accompanied our offseason I just wanted to take a break and look forward to our upcoming season. I just want to hear what everyone is most looking forward to in this coming baseball season? It doesn't have to be Braves related necessarily. Are you going to spring training? Do you get to visit a park you've never been to? Hyped about some young prospect?
Personally I am looking forward to a couple things. I can't wait to see what Hanson and Schafer can contribute this year to the major league team. And honestly I am pumped to see Jordan Schafer playing CF in Atl no matter what he does at the plate. I haven't had the chance to see his defense first hand and I can't wait to be overwhelmed. Also I want to see what the Rays can do in the face of the Yankees spending so much money. I was a Rays fan all season last year and the club is so young it is hard to conceive of them getting worse and there is still more talent in their farm system. What will David Price do for an entire season? Personally I can't wait.

FYF's resurgance ... or collapse
Stats/lack-of-track-record be damned. I have faith in the kid. I can’t explain it. If he doesn’t learn to take a pitch, etc. this year, I’ll have a hard time supporting him. So yeah, I’ll be excited either way.
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."

Pitch recognition be damned!
I’ll be happy if he gives a solid line of .290/.330/.440 or so while gunning out guys at the plate. I remember when he threw out Burrell at home a year or two ago. Heap had the ball by the time Pat the Bat was halfway down the line.

Weekly checks on Heyward’s and Hanson’s minor league stats.
And Francouer’s play this year. Some have abandoned him but I think he’s at the end of his rope and thats when he’ll play his best.

April 10th (the home opener). Weeknight Games. No more suffering through NBA games and crap college football teams on the weeknights, spring means its time for baseball. Thank God. The young players in general give reason for some optimism though I am not expecting to be watching a playoff team.

Mine
1. Rome – I go to lots of games, so it’s always fun. This year appears to be a little anticlimactic to last (Heyward, Freeman, Locke, etc), but you never know. I thought the same thing about the 2007 season, and Tyler Flowers emerged out of nowhere to make things interesting.
2. Jeff Francoeur – He’s become quite a polarizing figure these days, but he’s still one of my favorites. I really hope and expect he will turn things around. I’m realistic enough, though, to say that if he doesn’t, it’s time to move on……
3. Following all the minor league teams on a nightly basis via the net. Love it.
4. Going to Gwinnett – I’m actually physically closer to Gwinnett than Rome, and I’ll go to a few games there I’m sure….
5. First on my horizon is spring training. I think I’m going the weekend of the 19th (March), but this year I’m only going for one day instead of my usual two. The kids will drag me to Disney the other days. I may not even watch the major league game – I may just hang around the minor league complex all day.

Looking forward to baseball in general!
1. January 1st – the start of my strat league’s rookie draft. I’m sitting on the picks that will land me Price, Bruce and one of Cueto/Kuroda.
2. WBC Time!!!
3. March 31st – strat league opening day.
4. April 6th, MLB opening day Braves at Phillies in Primetime sunday night HD!!
5. Following Hermida, Bruce, McCann, Gordon, Price, Schafer (when), Gallardo, Hanson (when) and a whole slew of others to see how they are progressing.
6. Making it to at least 5 or 6 games in ATL this year.
7. Although this is just a wish list right now, but i’m hoping to make some games in CIN and STL this year as well. /fingers crossed
8. Mid- July – futures and all-star games. I know, I know. I still like to watch. They can do away with the homerun derby though and this whole “home field advantage” debacle as well.
9. September call ups
10. October playoffs
11. Off-season hot stove – trades, signings, gm meetings, etc..
12. Repeat
A couple more minor things I’m looking forward to (some of which are pure speculation):
- will Cliff Lee finally fall off the “cliff”
- Anthony Reyes being given a shot in CLE – good luck Anthony!
- watching Chris Davis become the next Travis Hafner (in more ways than one most likely)
- Heap hitting the 30 HR mark come mid-sept.
- watching the Mets fold … again
- watching the Rays knock the Yanks out of the playoffs … again (OK technically the Rays didn’t actually knock them out, but just the fact the Rays made it in over the Yanks is enough for me).

TOP TWENTY REASONS BIG JOE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2009 BRAVES SEASON
1) giving up on the season in may
2) listening to THE BEACH games all year
3) going to IRON PIGS games to see (hopefully) redmond, THOMAS, and schafer among others
4) going to CBP/PNC and leaving in disgust in the 3rd inning after chipper’s hamstring blows up while running down the dugout steps
5) joining only 2 fantasy leagues to continue my god knows how long streak of winning titles
6) seeing jeff francouer and casey kotchman swing at the first pitch every at bat for 10 games straight
7) watching mccann give up on the season, growing to sabathia-size, and still starting the ASG and winning a silver slugger
8) ron gant: lead radio analyst
9) welcoming the soothing voice of chip caray back into my life for 3 or 4 nights a week
10) eventually getting so frustrated with blanco hitting a routine ground ball for a DP when we need a routine fly
11) watching KJ get platooned for some unfathomable reason
12) kyle davies: #3 starter in KC
13) adam wainwright: ACE in STL
14) the epic battle at the bottom of the division with the nats. thankfully, they’ve done even less than us
15) javier vazquez getting turned on and everyone realizes “he fucking sucks” come his 4th start
16) tyler flowers blowing through the chisox system and seeing some PT in september
17) julio teheran gets deported for some odd reason
18) same with escobar
19) bobby cox has a stroke in the dugout, still insists on managing. even not being able to move his left side, pinch hits for KJ in the 5th inning
20) the phillies & mets both shipwrecking and the marlins win the division

You seriously need help
So let me try and enlighten you a bit.
No one is ripping you for suggesting we trade for Peavy. The fact it wasn’t your suggestion to begin with is besides the point. What you are being ripped for is:
1. the fact this was debated heavily for three months before you got here
2. the fact both teams have publicly stated IT’S NOT HAPPENING
3. that you condone trading Yunel Escobar, among others
4. that you completely ignore all the evidence that others are producing to counter your arguments
A couple more points. No one is arguing that Peavy isn’t a great pitcher. Our argument is:
1. his mechanics are poor which means he has an elevated injury risk
2. his contract alone is affordable but when you add in the replacement shortstop we will have to sign/trade for, it’s TOO MUCH
3. HE, nor his agent, have publicly said they would waive their NTC to come to Atlanta
4. HE, nor his agent, have publicly said they would not want concessions to waive their NTC
All of this adds up, making acquiring Peavy prohibitive (P.S. that means its not good for the team)

1. Debated ya right not one person agreed with me
2. No shit its not happening Frank Wren is a horrible GM
3. Ya they did before he realized escobar was in the deal he was actually excited to come to atl so he could be near his hometown
4. Escobar is not irreplacible you act like he is god he is 26, didnt even hit 300 last yr he had 2 sb’s there aint a god damn thing special bout him
5. you dont have arguments if u call fuckin p/gs and innings per year those are stupid stats that nobody cares bout

1) it was, back in november. no one gives a shit anymore
2) aside from trading teixeira for TWO SHITTY GUYS, explain what he’s did that was so bad
3) doh
4) he’s the best defensive shortstop in baseball
5) i don’t know what the fuck p/gs is. pitches per game started? thats pretty important, as are innings pitched, considering it determines how much stress is put on a pitcher’s arm

Yeah, that’s a strange thing to brag about.
Although I must admit, the sentence itself is difficult to interpret. Is it:
“Debated ya, right? Not one person agreed with me!”
or maybe
“Debated ya? Right! Not one person agreed with me!”
or finally
“Debated? Ya, right! Not one person agreed with me!”
Either way, it doesn’t end good for our new little friend.

To Summarize the stats u favor
ERA= cant be influenced by poor defense or Park Factors.
Wins= can be achieved by playing for a good team, even tho ur a shitty pitcher
Avg= not indicative of anythign excpet how many hits u have per ab… can be influenced by an artificial BABIP… does show how many runs are produced by the player. also doesnt show the players ability to get on base
SB= HAHAHAHA… not only is this a dumb stat the fact that u reference the Braves player and his inability to steal is magnificent… the Braves dont steal because the realzie to be effective u must steal at an rate above 80%… if ur not its easier to make productive outs and score runs.
ANd finally the fact that u think Omar Visquel (or as he is known to the rest of us Vizquel) is the best defensive SS in baseball might be the best thing ever… He was very good 10 years ago, maybe one of the best ever… But he has no arm… limited range, now that he is 40+… the only thing he has is his instincts which are very good and his soft hands… dont’ get me wrong he is still an above avg SS, but the best in baseball.. not quite… although this is the closest u have to a correct statement
Ill finish with some stats u might want to look into.. these are really simple to start with
OBP
OPS
ERA+
FIP
k/9
k/bb
and defesively UZR will work pretty well, although i admit i even need some help with this one…all can be found at FANgraphs.com
u have been forworn… from now on i reserve the right for all posters to ridicule u mercilessly if u continue to be dumb

I go out of my way to help u and ur gonna reject that help and continue to be an ignorant (oops that word is too big.. i got it "dumb"). here ill simplify it find new stats go to Fangraphs.com and look around, or maybe dont talk until next offseason and just read what some posters write. Most notably Smoltz Beard, ejruiz, or cbwilk… there are numerous others u cant tell they are good posters because they use facts, instead of stupidity ( tried to shorten that one but couldnt, sry)
But if you want to ignore help and continue to be a dick (and not the cool funny kind, or the phallus kind) by all means continue posting stupid shit and gettin a new asshole ripped everyday… its humorous to me

Great post idea, yodaime4. In no particular order:
Major League debuts: It’s always fun to see a guy get called up for the first time and this year should see a few guys debut that have had us all excited, Tommy Hanson and Jordan Schafer. It’s also pretty likely that Diory Hernandez, Steven Marek, Todd Redmond, and Kris Medlen will make their debuts at some point this year. And, of course there will be somebody we didn’t even expect, like Jason Perry and James Parr this past season.
The draft: I always look forward to this one, but this year should be very exciting with the Braves picking 7th. Over the last few years the 7th pick has yielded Yonder Alonso, Matt LaPorta, Clayton Kershaw, Troy Tulowitski, Homer Bailey, Nick Markakis, and Prince Fielder. Not too shabby.
The games: Come on, this is what it’s all about. Starting in early March in Spring Training, I go to somewhere between 60 and 100 games each year (though usually only a handful of Major League games) and I’m lucky enough to see Braves throughout the system and watch them get better from one year to the next.
The autographs: The only way you could possibly make the games better. I got 4,981 baseball cards signed this year, including John Smoltz for the first time and Dale Freakin Murphy! What makes getting autographs even more fun is how the Braves always make sure they have the very finest people playing for them and, really, getting autographs becomes second to just talking with the guys a bit. It’s nice hearing “Thank you for coming to the game.”
Baseball in general: Cause the offseason sucks. It sucks hard.
by cbwilk on Dec 26, 2008 11:05 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Autographs
Me too on this one. My first of the new year will be McCann at the hot stove thing in Rome. I’m sure there’s a limit of 1 item per person, and it will be me and my kid, so we’re getting her autograph book signed and Mac’s 2003 Rome card. I’ve got a bat he broke in spring training (a Brian Jordan model though), as well as a MLB ball I’d like to get signed…..if I can figure out a way to get those all signed, I’ll do it, but they usually enforce that stuff pretty tight.
You ever get to Rome?
by secondbass on Dec 26, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I haven’t been to Rome yet, but I’m planning on going this year. I think sometime around the end of July. My dad told me he wanted to see all the new parks in Rome, Pearl, and Gwinnett so I’m gonna take him on a week long road trip where we try to catch a couple of days in each along with a few in Atlanta. I’ll let you know close to when we’re doing it so maybe we can try to catch each other there.
I’m sure you can work out getting all the stuff signed you want. There’s all kinds of ways around the one per thing, like catching the guy on the way into the event or on the way out. And I’m sure you know, Mac is the man and I’d bet if your kid asks nice he’ll do it up for him. Good luck.
My first of the year is gonna be somebody from my college, Old Dominion. We’ve got a clinic they give every year where all the guys come back and hang out. So it’ll be one of them and then probably Goose Gossage who’s coming as the guest speaker. So that’ll be sweet.
