Baldelli and Schafer platoon

He could be what Kotsay was supposed to be last year.

Yes, he's not going to play every day, but his mitochondrial disease was apparently misdiagnosed, and his condition now is very treatable. He'll play way more than he has the last two years. He could spell Francoeur when he slumps, or, God forbid, Matt Diaz, if we fail to sign someone in LF.

He's not the answer to our SP or LF problems, but he is a good complementary player who can be signed on the (relatively) cheap. Who knows, maybe he'll have a breakout season and we can trade him to a contender at the deadline.

Yes

Looking at Baldelli would be a terrific idea, IMO. I don’t think they should overpay, but if he will sign a $25M/4 deal, it would be a nice discount to factor in his health risk, as he is probably a 2 win player in a corner OF position. Plus, the Braves wouldn’t lose a draft pick if they signed him.

Although it does concern me that the Rays did not exercise his $6M option for 09. Do they know something?

+1

I have been asking for this signing for over a month. He would be a great 4th OF and could platoon if needed. I have been championing signing Adam Dunn & Baldelli. If we did we could play Dunn at 1B when we face a tough LHP, and give Kotchman a day off, we plug Baldelli in in LF and we still a potent lineup and we don’t lose much defensively. Kotchman is better at 1B but Baldelli is a huge improvement over Dunn. We could sign both and end up spending 16-17 million a year. 13 for dunn and 3-4 for Baldelli.

IF

I am happy as hell they’ve discovered his true ailment and if I thought he could return to pre-disease levels I would be all for acquiring him. But there has been no mention of what the treatment is nor the potential recovery time, at least not that I have read. I would want to know the answers to those questions before I make that commitment. Until then we have to consider that he’s still not ready to play on a consistent basis.

Doubt

Baldelli would sign for $3-4M per year.

The option was declined last year when he was diagnosed.

For most options I think you have to make the decision a year ahead of time or something.

by VictorW on Dec 24, 2008 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Really?

OK, that sounds odd, but I’ll take your word for it that Baldelli’s was declined before the Rays learned of his misdiagnosis.

I also think that Baldelli is an interesting idea

If Jeff F. can’t pull it together next year we will be looking to replace him in 2010. Looking at the FA next year it looks like Nady and what’s left. If we sign Baldelli he could fill in for Frenchy if he struggles or could platoon in LF with say Pat Burrell or god forbid Diaz.

With the Tex signing, Nady may now be available for 09. Not sure what his defense is like, but if it’s above-average in a corner, I’d explore that.

I’d much rather us go after Nick Swisher. Swisher is coming off a career-low year, as opposed to Nady’s career-high year. The stats:

Swisher: .219/.332/.410 – .251BABIP
Nady: .305/.357/.510 – .316BABIP

When we look at the career lines, we find out not only was Swisher unlucky, but that Nady was lucky.

Swisher: .244/.354/.451 – .279BABIP
Nady: .280/.335/.467 – .316BABIP

So we could expect to see Swisher get better next year while Nady regresses. And about defense? UZR has Swisher at a career +6.3 for LF. Nady has a -1.2UZR. Advantage: Swisher

by bravesfan91 on Dec 23, 2008 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Oops, make that a .337BABIP for Nady in 2008.

by bravesfan91 on Dec 23, 2008 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Obviously I’d prefer Swish over Nady too, I just don’t think the Yanks will deal him, Shiny New Toy Syndrome and all.

However, to the baseline point, I’ve done some looking into Nady and, with his poor defense, he’s not seeming like a great option. I withdraw the suggestion.

Just a little rosterbating

I could live with this lineup in ’09:

Baldelli
Escobar
C. Jones
Nady
McCann
Francoeur
Kotchman
K. Johnson

xavier nady: cleanup hitter.

You know any other potentially available RH bats?

It’s only for 1 year, and the only other options are multi-year deals for Burrell and company. He’ll come cheaper than Ankiel/Ludwick. The power numbers are low for clean-up, but I really like his OBP. The lineup I listed is well balanced and achievable, I didn’t say it was ideal.

by Land-Man on Dec 24, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Sigh.....

Learn about BABIP, then look at Nick Swisher who is just as available as Nady is.

by bravesfan91 on Dec 24, 2008 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Sigh...

I’m not your average moron poster, I do research and defend my ideas/claims. I thought Swish was LH (he’s switch) or I would’ve mentioned him. I’d take either, I have a hard-on for OBP.

My bad then dude, its just there’s been an influx of idiots as of late. Merry Christmas!
