Braves in trade talks for Vazquez

We all heard whispers about this, but looks like it's getting close. I would definitely trade Jo-Jo and Lilli for Vazquez. What are your thoughts? This is from Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports...

The Braves, moving to address their starting pitching needs, are in serious discussions with the White Sox about a trade for right-hander Javier Vazquez, according to major-league sources.

The White Sox would receive as many three players in return. Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes and infielder Brent Lillibridge are among the names under discussion, sources said.

The Braves entered the offseason intending to acquire two front-line starting pitchers. When they failed in their attempt to acquire Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, they shifted their attention to free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett and began pursuing other trades.

Vazquez, 32, went 12-16 with a 4.67 ERA for the White Sox last season. He is not a top-of-the-rotation starter, but his stuff remains above average and he could benefit from a move to the National League. He has pitched 200 or more innings in eight of the last nine seasons, the exception being 2004, when he worked 198.

For the White Sox, the deal would continue the team's quest to get younger and more athletic while reducing payroll. The Sox also are discussing trades involving outfielder Jermaine Dye, and earlier this offseason sent first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher and a minor league pitcher to the Yankees for infielder Wilson Betemit and two minor-league pitchers.

Vazquez is under contract for $11.5 million next season and $11.5 million in 2010. His limited no-trade clause blocks deals only to teams in the NL West and AL West, and he likely would welcome a trade to Atlanta, one of the closest major-league cities to his native Puerto Rico.

i think it would be a great move. jojo and lilli really havent done much for us

by heap16 on Dec 2, 2008 5:45 PM EST   0 recs

I personally have been a fan of trading for Vazquez. He is only signed for 2 for years which is about when the next crop of young pitchers will start to make their way to the majors. Like you said he is not an ace but would be a good veteran addition. He has good strikeout numbers, and should be had for the right price.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about this guy. His numbers don’t amaze me, but then again I’ve been looking at those of Jake Peavy and Ben Sheets, and neither one of them have spent time on the Expos roster. Sounds like a good deal to me, and after 6 years of Mr. Glass, I could use a sure fire 200 inning/ high strike out guy.

Makes ya think about Lilly

Either (1) The team isn’t willing to trade Yunel or (2) The team is willing to trade/acquire his replacement (as opposed to filling his position with talent from w/in the organization).

just in case you wanted to read the article. Rosenthal recently updated it. All thats new is that he says that the Braves are on the verge of aquiring Vazquez.

by jack dein on Dec 2, 2008 6:05 PM EST   0 recs

If the Braves do this

I will sleep a lot better.
Dream Team Offseason Pickups:
1. Jake Peavy
2. Javier Vasquez
3. Furcal, only cause Yunel had to go
4. Adam Dunn

by someguy917 on Dec 2, 2008 6:07 PM EST   0 recs

WHY?!

Vasquez is not a no. 2 starter! He’s a three at best! Doesn’t really hurt us … but it doesn’t help like we need it to either. Know what I’m sayin’?

No I don't

We need to get moving this offseason. If we can dump two talented guys who can’t really perform for us, for a pitcher who is proven I say go for it.

by someguy917 on Dec 2, 2008 6:14 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

But I hope Wren doesn’t see him as our no. 2, because we could do a lot better. That’s all I’m saying.

if we got vazquez, then signed burnett then he would be our 4th starter. which would be pretty damn good

by heap16 on Dec 2, 2008 6:30 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

if its jojo, lilli and a fringe prospect, i don’t give a shit, bring him aboard. only, and only if, he is a #3 and not THE ACE. fuck that. i’ve also heard we’re pretty hot and heavy with burnett too

by bigjoe on Dec 2, 2008 6:18 PM EST   0 recs

I agree he is certainly not the ace

But he can eat up the innings a lot better than JJ or Campillo so I would slot him in at 2.

by someguy917 on Dec 2, 2008 6:25 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Rosenthal just updated the article again

It’s apparently a done deal! Jo-Jo is NOT in the deal, no other details yet. Contigent upon passing physicals.

by scstrato on Dec 2, 2008 6:27 PM EST   0 recs

A baseball source told ESPN’s Peter Gammons that the deal will include four other players, including reliever Boone Logan, who would also go from the White Sox to the Braves.

Among the players expected to go from Atlanta to the Chicago organization are Jo-Jo Reyes, Brett Lillibridge and another top prospect.

Though rosenthal has said reyes isn’t in the deal. pleeeeeeease don’t be anyone ranked in the TC 25…

it’s brent lillibridge. and they are not top prospects, i’m afraid.

god i hope not

by heap16 on Dec 2, 2008 6:37 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Doesn't say

But Rosenthal just updated again and is now speculating that FLOWERS is in the deal. I don’t like that part at all.

yeah, FUCK that

Flowers in the deal

not good at all.

by Charmin519 on Dec 2, 2008 6:39 PM EST   0 recs

We certainly agree on that one

If we had to trade Flowers I would have rather him been in a deal for a more impactful starter than Vazquez. Otherwise I would have kept him.

by scstrato on Dec 2, 2008 6:42 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I’m not going to throw something out the window until I hear definitively that Flowers is in the deal. I really don’t think Wren would do that. And if he did…well, my printer is going out the window. Or maybe my ironing board. My cat?

my growler?

oh, you guys weren’t around for the growler part of the season…my bad

yeah…why not throw flowers into the peavy deal instead? fuck

Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

by bigjoe on Dec 2, 2008 6:43 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

because

they wanted Escobar, Flowers/Gorkys, Reyes/Morton, and probably Rorhbough or Locke and STILL the Braves grant Peavy his no trade clause. Thats why we didn’t do the peavy deal.

I like Flowers to but even if he is in the deal i still think its a good trade for us. I like Reyes potential and Flowers potential but since Wren wants to go for it all then it makes sense. Vazquez is a good number 3 starter. We still have Freeman in the minors at First. Who would you rather trade? Flowers or Freeman? 22 year old in High A? or 18 year old that dominated Low A and will be 19 at High A? Seriously Vazquez is very good.

by rockybull on Dec 2, 2008 6:52 PM EST   0 recs

i’d rather keep them both, and transition one of them to the OF…or trade one of them when their value is much higher than it is now

Flowers provides depth at catcher in case of injury

He has value in that capacity right now. Now’s not the time to get rid of the only C in the organization who can hit.

by buzzdeadwax on Dec 2, 2008 7:06 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Amen

Vote No to trading Flowers!

This whole run-off election stuff is on the brain……

by secondbass on Dec 2, 2008 7:12 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I like Flowers

he has alot of potential. But so did Salty at the time that we traded him. I thought Salty was a MUCH better prospect than Flowers. And Salty has not done much in the majors since the trade im not sayin Flowers wont but there is a good chance that he doesn’t do nothin either. I would rather keep Flowers but its better than adding Schafer, Hernandez or Freeman, or Rorhbough, or somebody like that in the deal. Its a solid deal for us and plus Vazquez is only for 2 years. Its better than signing Burnett AND Lowe to 4 or 5 year deals each. One of those deals would be fine but not signing both to that long of a contract. This is just what we need.

braves#1

by rockybull on Dec 2, 2008 7:20 PM EST   0 recs

btw,

im not sayin Salty is a bust he is still young and has plenty of time i was just naming him thats all.

shockingly similar numbers at the beach…salty: 913. flowers: 921
