Javier Vazquez

According to Rosenthal, the braves are in serious discussions with the ChiSox about vazquez. Jo-Jo and Lillibridge are among the names being discussed. personally i think this would be a nice move for the braves. 9 staright seasons of at least 30 starts doesnt sound too bad. It also says the braves might be giving as many as three players to get him. Maybe we get him, sign Burnett, then go after Adam Dunn. Any thoughts?

Vasquez is underrated

and if we only had to send Lillibridge, Reyes, and perhaps another C-grade prospect, I would consider it a solid acquisition. He’s durable, and believe it or not is in possession of the 13th best career K/BB ratio in baseball history.

This is a very good trade for us. Losing Jo-Jo and Lillibridge isnt a problem and if its another player like them we should be good.

by SayHeyWerd on Dec 2, 2008 6:10 PM EST reply actions

Rosenthal may have just updated his article, but it says very clearly that Jo-Jo is not in the deal. The other pitcher and player don’t appear to be named.

by scstrato on Dec 2, 2008 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

Deal is apparently done

Contingent upon physicals. No mention of who is involved outside of Lilli, but he does say Jo-Jo is NOT in the deal.

by scstrato on Dec 2, 2008 6:28 PM EST reply actions

Sounds like a no-brainer for that price

I like Lilli, but he has no real position, even if we traded Yunel.

Roto is speculating Morton and a reliever as the other two players.

by Mekons5 on Dec 2, 2008 6:30 PM EST reply actions

Done Deal

Gammons reporting that deal is done. 5 player deal with us sending jojo, lilli, and another top prospect.

by gutisking on Dec 2, 2008 6:33 PM EST reply actions

Thank God

We got a pitcher without giving up really anything but some cash. It looks like we have 2 starters now and plenty of money left to sign Burnett and Dunn.

by mauck98 on Dec 2, 2008 6:37 PM EST reply actions

Don't count on it

Too much speculation going on. Gammons says Jo Jo, Rosenthal says Flowers. Let’s not grade it until the official annoucement comes out.

by scstrato on Dec 2, 2008 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Flowers..

MLB trade rumours thinks its Flowers..why do this deal? Vasquez is a guy who has never fully ’gotten" it…always leaves you thinking he could do more…and its not as if he is cheap

by NYSOX on Dec 2, 2008 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

Your on point scstrato

Let’s not count the chickens before they hatch. If it’s Lil bit, Jo Jo, and Flowers then I’m a little concerned unless Wren has plan’s for another trade involving the bullpen arm picked up.

by Charmin519 on Dec 2, 2008 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

reyes vs. flowers

that is a pretty big difference

"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."

by jug on Dec 2, 2008 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Very big

and Wren would be stupid to unload Flowers. We don’t have any legit catching prospects left in the system. I know Heap has it locked down, but still…

by cmdpsu15 on Dec 2, 2008 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Flowers is

Expendable we have a great catcher that hits for Power and average cant ask for anything better…….. we need pitching unload him

Gotta Love those "classy" Tide Detergent Box Hats

couldnt agree more. hey, we could maybe trade for one of the rangers catchers if we need to. hell, two of them (ramirez and salty) used to be ours anyway

by heap16 on Dec 3, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

good deal

i know you hate to let flowers go but what we get in the deal fills a big need we were not gonna be able to fill via free agency we may get burnett still and i hope we do but we couldnt land two pitchers so this is a win win for us even though we let flowers go it will pay its dividends

by bravesrbaseball on Dec 3, 2008 4:03 AM EST reply actions

agreed...

I think Flowers has a lot of potential, but we have no place to use him and he has never played above A ball, so to get an innings eater like Vasquez for virtually nothing is a very good deal. Guys are going to complain about giving up Flowers, but you have to give to get, and Lord knows we can’t have too many SPs! The best thing about this deal is that it doesn’t require any back-filling and it clears some of the log jam of AAAA infielders we have. I don’t think it would have been done if the Chisox had demanded Jo Jo instead of Flowers. I think Vasquez will prosper by working for BC instead of Ozzie, too!

by BBFAN46 on Dec 3, 2008 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

Where’s the logjam of AAA infielders? I agree that, barring something radical, Brent Lillibridge would have returned to AAA, and we had Diory Hernandez at AAA last year and he’s likely to return, but aside from that I’m not sure who you’re talking about.
Of the guys who played at Richmond last year, Ruben Gotay and Enrique Cruz are free agents, Derrick Arnold is a backup, J.C. Holt is probably going to be in AAA, and Paul Bennett and Mike Rozema retired. I’d mention Wes Timmons, but he really only plays third anymore, and he’s a free agent.
Of the guys from Mississippi who didn’t play for Richmond at all, Javier Guzman is a free agent, Greg Creek is a corner guy, Chad Lundhal and Brandon Hicks are likely to be at Mississippi again, and Robert Marcial probably will be too, though he could be a backup at AAA.
So of all those guys, the only ones in our organization who will probably be at AAA are Holt and Hernandez, and Lillibridge had he not been traded. I’m really not trying to be a jerk, I’m just curious where you got the idea of a AAA logjam of infielders.

by cbwilk on Dec 3, 2008 8:23 AM EST up reply actions

Not AAA...

AAAA. Guys who have done their time in triple A, but can’t seem to quite make the every day major league level. We can always backfill from the lower levels for AAA, but what do you do with AAAA players?

by BBFAN46 on Dec 3, 2008 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

Sorry, I misread that the first time. Though really, I’m not sure I see a logjam of 4A guys either. Gotay I would definitely characterize as 4A, though he did a pretty good job in Atlanta this season. Prado proved he belonged in the majors, at the very least as a bench player. Brent Lillibridge just got his first shot at the majors so I don’t see how he could get the 4A tag yet.

by cbwilk on Dec 3, 2008 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

That's the nature...

of 4A players — they do a “pretty good job”, but they don’t take anyone’s job. I think the role of the minor league admin people is to keep the pipeline filled, but be careful not to let it get clogged. I think Lillibridge has had more than enough time to prove he should be given more of a chance to take a job, so I’m not sad to see him go. He still has a lot of potential, but you can only wait so long for it to develop. I think Prado is a lot closer than some expect. If (when) Yunel is traded, FW may give him a shot at SS, but I don’t really expect it; he is more of a 2B-man.

by BBFAN46 on Dec 3, 2008 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

aaa infielders

we used to have a log jam of infielders in aaa prado, lillibridge, escobar, among others but now we have no room for them on the team. prado can be an asset but if anyone else goes i hope its twinkle toes kelly johnson i know some like him but he forgets hes a pull hitter and it kills him to go up the middle or opposite field. so unless peavy is mentioned with the name escobar they should leave him alone and pursue a trade with twinkle toes and get us an outfielder then do whatever it takes to sign burnett. thats the only way we can try to compete with phillie or the mets next year. otherwise with what we have we wont compete until 2 maybe 3 years and this trade was a waste in that case. but at least in 2 or 3 years we have the potential to look like this years tampa bay rays either way wren needs to stay away from the talent pool, because although the braves have made good trades they have made bad ones also , adam wainrite for j d drew was a good example we also traded dye, justice, schmidt, and some really good talent when we got tex and all those have bit us hard and hurt as fans.

you’ll be putting your head through a wall if prado gets more than 200 AB in a season.
