What are you reading, watching, listening to or playing right now? V 2.0

So a few months back I did one of these just to see what everyone else around here was into other than just the Braves and now that I have made a semi-return to the Braves community in the midst of a turbulent offseason, lets take a few moments to learn a little more about each other and forget a few of the Braves problems.

The deal is just tell us what book you are reading, what music you are hearing, what game you are playing or what television series has had you captivated lately. I will go first!

Book: Tales of the Otori series. If you haven't read it, all of the books are excellent. A good read

Music: The Fountain soundtrack. Crazy movie from a director who is known for some screwed up stuff, the music is also excellent.

Game: Currently pushing my way through Fable II.

TV: lately I haven't seen much outside Sportscenter and my nightly Scrubs addiction.

Book: PLAY BALL, by John Feinstein. Interesting perspectives, back from 1993, and I kind of think that all baseball people (players, management, fans) could benefit from seeing some of the simpler thinking of the times.

Music: The Bravery.

Game: Left 4 Dead, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Castle Crashers. I picked up an XBOX on Black Friday, and have been playing more video games the last month than I had been in like the year prior.

TV: Back episodes of Weeds and Dexter. Also watch a lot of BBC America, watching Top Gear and the good version of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Book: a whaaat?

Music: Decemberists album “The Crane Wife” just can’t get out of my head, and the latest Emmylou Harris album is a whole lot of good

Game: Freecell… I’m proving that every game can be solved, I’ve been working on it for years…

TV: Waiting for the next season of Heroes, Life, Law & Order CI (Jeff Goldblum), Sons of Anarchy (never thought I’d like it, but it’s awesome), and My Own Worst Enemy (never thought I’d like this either, but it’s good). I’m also really waiting on Scrubs to come back on ABC, and I’m keeping up with 30 Rock and the Office…. I watch waaaaay too much TV.

S.O.A. was the best new show to air this year bar none. Hate the way it ended, would’ve liked to see more of Donna, but can’t wait til next season.

Book: Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris. Just finished it today. Pretty good, but not sure why it’s a best seller. Now I’m staring on a collection of crime comics.

Music: Bright Eyes’ Lifted album. I can never find a compelling reason why this shouldn’t be playing.

Game: The new Madden. I love the game but I hate the announcers. After like four games I’ve heard every annoying thing Chris Collinsworth has to say (almost as bad as that game with Joe Morgan). They sell a billion copies a year, spring for multiple announcing crews!

TV: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I like this show more every week. And, of course, The Office.

by cbwilk on Dec 19, 2008 2:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Book: Dance with Death by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Love their writing

Music: Going through a Buckcherry phase at the moment. Also listening to alot of Celtic Christmas music.

Game: Lord of the Rings Online. New expansion just came out.

TV: Not much except football. Finally got a HD TV and a blu-ray player last month, so I’ve been watching alot of movies in glorious 1080i lately.

-1000 for being a dick.

Good call yondaime4

Book: Almost done with Atlas Shrugged. One hell of a story.

Music: Been on a big Elliott Smith binge lately, but Ben Harper is also in the mix. Margo & the Nuclear So and So’s new album is pretty good too.

Games: Finished the campaign in Gears of War 2, still playing multiplayer. Also almost done with Fallout 3, and halfway through Fable 2. Hoping Santa brings me Farcry 2 and Left 4 Dead.

TV: I can’t stand the crap on “normal” TV. Just finished season 3 of Dexter, and it wasn’t bad. At the advice of a friend I’ve been plowing through The Wire on DVD. In the middle of season 4 of 5…probably the best show I’ve ever seen, other than Deadwood.

Book: Area 51: The Dreamland Chronicles. I don’t believe in a lot of conspiracy theories, but they’re interesting to read about.

Music: I’ve been going through a Tool phase again after playing the new Guitar Hero.

Game: OOTP 9, Halo 3, COD 4 and 5, Far Cry 2, and Resistance 2. I love me some FPS.

TV: I’ve been watching a lot of Mad Men lately. I’m having Soprano withdrawals. :(

Book: I can’t read!!!!

Music: Anything and everything from Jazz to the Wu-Tang Clan

Game: MLB Power Pros for the Wii. I want to get an Xbox 360, but I am afraid that it will die on me, and I want to get a PS 3, but I don’t have the $$$$

TV: Entourage, Big Bang Theory, Law and Order: SVU. I actually do not watch a whole lot of TV; however, I am a huge fan of movies and I am an impulsive DVD buyer. Check out the movie City of God, it is awesome!

by mvandonsel on Dec 19, 2008 3:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

360 in my house is on pretty much 24/7 when myself or my roommate aren’t at work. We got the horrific Red Ring of Death, and all we had to do was send it back to Microsoft. A couple weeks later, new one arrived in the mail.

City of God is a great movie. Netflix just put City of Men on their Instant View, so I’ll be watching that in the near future.

For anyone looking for a great revenge thriller, I highly recommend the movie Oldboy. Subtitle alert (although the English dub is bearable)! Not for the faint of heart. Please see it before Spielburg and Will Smith ruin it with their remake.

Old Boy was amazing. But have you seen the rest of the trilogy? Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Mrs. Vengeance. All part of a Vengeance Trilogy but none of the movies related by anything other than the concept of revenge. All three are good but Oldboy is the best

by yondaime4 on Dec 20, 2008 12:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I did watch all three of them, but I thought one of them was called Lady Vengeance? Other two were okay I thought. I feel like if I watched Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance again I might like it more, though. And you’re right, Oldboy is the best…very stylized, and I love the music (a top-5 movie of mine, actually).

You seen anything by Takashi Miike? Dude comes out with like 5 movies each year, but I’ve only seen a few of them. His forte is more horror-based and I would recommend Audition . There’s some seriously fucked up scenes in it though, so it’s not for the faint of heart.

MLB Power Pros rules. Too bad it came out way the hell late into the 2008 season, and I didn’t get hold of it until after Mark Teixeira was traded. It was so sad too, because Tex was slightly ranked higher than Chipper in power, and it showed in the game when I’d get Chipper to hit all sorts of deep doubles and triples, where Tex blasted everything out.

Oh well. I’ve pitched three perfect games with Smoltz already though.

For Vonnegut, I always say after Slaughterhouse Five, you should read either Breakfast of Champions or Cat’s Cradle, with Cat’s Cradle getting the slight edge. Those are definitely his next best.
After that, I personally really like Timequake, Dead Eye Dick, and his first one, Play Piano.
But let’s be honest, you can’t go wrong with a Vonnegut novel.

Book: Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Hey, I gotta read the books from the guy who’s penning the final Wheel of Time book. Mistborn was a great read and I’m on to Well of Ascension now. I think I might read the Left Behind series next.

Music: I’ve been into Death Cab for Cutie, Silversun Pickups and Snow Patrol for some time now.

Game: Already beat Fable 2, but I’m playing again so I can get all my achievement points. Been playing some Halo 3 as well. When the wife feels like playing I break out the Wii of course.

TV: Let’s see, don’t watch a lot of TV, but I do watch Heroes and PTI when they are on. When I get a chance, I like to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Hidden Potential

This is great stuff everyone. Smolt’s Beard, I’ve been meaning to read Atlas Shrugged for awhile, but just haven’t remembered to pick it up. I now have that on my list of books to read.

This was a lot of fun last year:

Book: Without Remorse, Tom Clancy (old, I know, but I am going through them in chronological order, just getting started obviously, and I’m going to re-read the ones I’ve read already)

Music: The only thing I have in my head right now is all of the music made by Pujolina’s toys

Game: Wii Sports and Wii Fit

TV: Looking forward to Lost coming back; other than that just some “okay” shows to get me through. Used to love Heroes but it has fallen off a lot IMO. I still watch it; it’s just not as good as in season 1.

Book: Re-reading Stephen King’s ‘Eyes of the Dragon’.

Music: Sting’s ‘Demolition Man’ soundtrack……it’s got a great live version of ‘King of Pain’. Also Duran Duran’s ‘Red Carpet Massacre’. Good stuff, but I may be the only person on the planet listening to it.

Game: No time for such shenanigans.

TV: The only tv I even care to watch thses days is when I tivo ‘Clone Wars’ on Cartoon Network. If you like Star Wars at all, that’s a dang fine show. Also Everybody Loves Raymond DVDs when I go to bed. I rotate those out with Seinfeld, Arrested Development, and The Office DVDs.

Some of mine are bit on the girl-y side, but I’m not ashamed, lol.

Book: True Believer by Nicholas Sparks. Yes, I’m a girl, and I like sappy stuff.

Music: I’m eclectic, but lately I’m into Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Britney Spears’ new cd, Circus, (what? it’s catchy), and Taylor Swift. I also love Evanescence, Hinder, Daughtry, Seether, The Veronicas, Pink, Nickelback, plus a lot more.

Game: Tomb Raider Chronicles on PC. Played this before but got to the last level when my computer got wiped when it was getting fixed. Love any Tomb Raider games, though.

TV: Love NCIS, new or old. Can’t get enough of it.

Book: Dreamweaver for dummies. Too lazy to learn html and I finally gave up on Frontpage (6 years too late). Haven’t read anything in a long time outside of tech tutorial books unfortunately.

Music: Cary Ann Hearst and the Borrowed Angels / Lazy Excuse. Songs Black Water, Kudzu and Glitter. She’s a family friend from Charleston, not VERY well known, but man has she got a voice!!! Search for her on MySpace if you’re interested. Her newer stuff is rather raw, but this specific album will be a fav of mine for a long, long time.

TV: Just finished Dexter, man that guys is creepy. Heroes, Sarah Conor Chronicles and Fringe. During “re-run” season I usually breakout the DVD’s – Band of Brothers, Deadwood, Dazed and Confused (VHS, haven’t broken down and bought the DVD yet), and Beowulf.

By the way, and sorry for the shameless request for help but, is there anyone here who is an expert at Photoshop who might be willing to let me pick their brain? I’m trying to learn how to build a drop shadow image to use as a background on my webpage. I have successfully completed this when using a white background, but I can’t get it to look right with color backgrounds. I’d have to provide an example to show you what I mean.

My email is scstrato11-nospam at yahoo.com. Yes it’s a disposable addy, just don’t want to put my real addy in a public forum. Thanks in advance!

Shoot

My email’s publicly available. I don’t check it unless I’m expecting anything, so if you have a question, I might be able to help you.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Appreciate the offer, but after locking myself in my office this morning I finally figured out my problem. Man, Photoshop can be a bitch when it wants to be.

Thanks though!

I was really disappointed by this season of Dexter, but yeah, Michael C. Hall does a tremendous job. I saw a few episodes of Band of Brothers and really liked it…will be getting the box set for Christmas.

Also good to see I’m not the only Deadwood fan around. It’s criminal how Milch gave up on it to write that horrific surfing show.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Oh man, Band of Brothers is probably the best piece of entertainment EVER! I’ve probably watched the entire series 10 times already and it just keeps getting better.

Deadwood was awesome, I was crushed when it was cancelled/dropped. Any show that can get away with that many oral chicken references and still be one of the best shows around should be given an infinite run time in my book! My favorite episode was when Al was trying to cure his constipation (or whatever the hell he had) with the girls thumb. Now there’s a home remedy!

Ugh…that’s a painful episode to watch. He’s definitely the best character though. That show has my favorite line from any movie or television show:

“And here’s my counter-offer to your counter-offer…GO FUCK YOURSELF.”

I guess I should be one to talk.

There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Book: Killing yourself to Live by Chuck Closterman. This guy is probably the most astute viewer of pop culture I have ever read. Plus, he’s funny as hell.

Music: Kings of Leon and Black Keys for now. Maybe a little of the Strokes or Spoon.

Game: Madden 09 and MLB 2K9

T.V.: Dexter, Californication and West Wing reruns.

Nice!

West Wing might be my favorite show of all time. “Two Cathedrals” has a permanent place on my DVR
