The Braves really were playing low-ball with the Padres

Via MLBTR, we get this nugget from a Padres beat writer on the inner workings of the failed Jake Peavy trade between the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres:

As part of Jake Peavy trade talks in November, the Padres and Braves were far along on a 4-for-1 plan that included shortstop Yunel Escobar and center fielder prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Padres wanted the Braves to include starting pitcher Charlie Morton instead of Jo-Jo Reyes and pushed hard for either pitching prospect Jeff Locke or catching prospect Tyler Flowers to be substituted for reliever Blaine Boyer. Talks regressed from there, and the Braves later traded Flowers to the White Sox. According to mlb.com, the Braves now would be unwilling to deal Escobar, described by teammate Chipper Jones as the best shortstop in the National League. Whether Peavy would consent to a trade to Atlanta also remains in question, though if the Cubs are out of the picture, it can't hurt those chances.

Wow, we really were being stingy with our prospects, though, Escobar ad Gorkys is a big haul. I'm surprised that we think that highly of Charlie Morton. That makes me think he's got the inside track over other guys this spring to win a job in the starting rotation.

I don't know about this

This man claims no source for this information, for all we know his source could be the great Kevin Towers. Just more speculation from a beat writer in my opinion. I’m definitely not taking it as the gospel.

i call bs. If they didn’t move Tyler in the Vazquez deal I might believe it. But his stock is up so high now why they refuse to move him in the Peavy deal but move him for Javier Vazquez?

I agree with your sentiments. However, even if Tyler would have been included Wren still would have shot the deal down cause he wants to keep Yunel. And I don’t blame him.

sub Kelly Johnson for Yunel and include Brandon Jones, Gorkys, Charlie or JoJo and include one more lower level prospect and maybe you have a deal.

Towers has to be sweating a lot right now and I don’t see any other teams that could or would offer a better deal than what the Braves can.

I beginning to think that even including KJ will be too much. Prado is not going to give you the same production that Kelly will, both offensively and defensively.

I guess I should be one to talk.

I don't like giving KJ up either but..........

It comes down to this.

Would you rather have your #1 Ace under contract for a few years? or

Would you rather have an above average 2B?

Prado will not be the long term guy but I think it’s much more cost effective in the long run. Plus, which do you believe is harder to fill #1 Ace or 2b? Once again, I don’t like giving KJ up but if we have to at least we would have our #1 Ace.

Your talking 2010 rotation with Peavy, Hudson, Vazquez, JJ, and maybe Hanson.

I understand, but plenty of people on here have been bringing up the red flags in regards to Peavy and I’m beginning to agree more and more with them. Just my opinion, though.

I don’t want to give up either KJ or Yunel, but I’m saying I’d rather give up KJ over Yunel.

I really like both players and hope they stay, although it would be nice to get Peavy.

i’d rather pay kelly johnson much less money considering we’d be winning the same amount of games with either of them.

I don’t think this is true.

assuming we trot out the outfield of shit again, we’re not gonna score enough runs to give peavy any wins. if we trot out the outfield of shit AND have prado at second, we’re gonna score even LESS runs.

That’s true, but I guess I assume (hope against hope, maybe?) that Wren would get us an outfielder. There’s this guy called Adam Dunn that I think we’ve heard of…I wonder if I can put his name into the suggestion box outside of Wren’s office.

Hey! What if...

Dunn’s left-handedness balances out the rotation? I know he won’t actually be pitching, but he IS left-handed. Just a thought.

Imagine

Two leagues, separated by the hand orientation. Switch-hitters would have to stick to one. And after their respective league championship series, the World Series would be lefties vs. righties, best of 9, so that five starting pitchers can be showcased.

And to eliminate the advantages, re-write the rules of baseball, and lefties’ first base is where the traditional third base is, and it goes in opposite order. Hosting park dictates the direction in which the base runners must run.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I agree with you Sparhawk. A package of KJ, Morton, BJones, and a real low pitching prospect/Blaine Boyer would be what I’d throw their way now. Although, we need a #1, and unless someone emerges as a possibility in the not-so-near future (Kazmir?) then maybe Kevin Towers feels he has the upper hand.

I Saw That...

I wouldn’t mind building something around Gorkys, Morton and Locke…

That’s the first realistic option I’ve read, at least from our perspective. Two top 10 prospects, a major league ready pitcher and a filler (mid-level prospect). That’s certainly fair in my mind but I think the bigger question is whether or not Peavy is willing to become a Brave (dropping NTC demands) and whether Towers would lower his demands that much?

by scstrato on Dec 15, 2008 12:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Unbeleivable

They are seriously underestimating Yunel, because he is will be just as valuable to the Padres as Peavey over the life of Peavey’s contract. To throw in two more top ten prospects and a ML ready pitcher is overpaying.

by JFP on Dec 15, 2008 12:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much...

Yunel Escobar was one of the best SS in the game this year. He’s a good on base percentage guy who plays excellent defense at one of the toughest places on the diamond. A very underrated player, even by a lot of Braves fans. Saying that Escobar, Hernandez, Reyes, and Boyer was “low balling” the Padres is a bit of an overstatement. I would have liked that deal had we been in possession of another ML-ready shortstop and if the pitcher didn’t have Peavy’s significant red flags.

rest of Braves package > Cubs rumored package

Don’t get it. Towers is a moron.
