Didn't care about him when he played in the Pacific Northwest, I just knew I didn't want us to sign him. Now I can hate him 19 times a year.

Maybe he's a grithustler with calm eyes

It’s weird for a guy like him to get that kind of attention since he’s not a 5’9" white guy.

Only reason gondeee greenlit it to the front page

Was so that eventually, RainDelay would see it, and breathe a great sigh of relief.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Where is he, with his clips of Ibanez’s gold glove fielding?

by sddbaker on Dec 12, 2008 10:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like Ibanez but 10 mil per year? The Phils will regret that one by 2011.

by matches on Dec 12, 2008 9:31 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think they’ll regret it by 2009

by gondeee on Dec 12, 2008 10:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow….now all we have to do is throw Gonzo out there to take down Utley, Howard and Ibanez…not smart stacking three lefties in a row. And here they thought Burrell’s defense was horrible, wait till they get a look at Ibanez.

+1

I was going to post the exact same thing. Boone Logan is gonna earn his paycheck against those three.

I guess I should be one to talk.

Why in the world didn’t Philly just resign Burrell? With the way the market is going, you think he’d take something like $36M over 3? $6M more and you get younger, better player and you don’t lose a first round draft pick. I’m SO confused.

by VictorW on Dec 12, 2008 11:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

LMAO

1. It’s the Phillies

2. I would almost bet that Burrell and Dunn will be lucky to get 12mil per contacts in this market.

by scstrato on Dec 12, 2008 11:17 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wonder

When was the last time a free agent that a collective contingent of Braves fans (like Talking Chop) heavily supported, actually ended up signing with the Braves?

Would Adam Dunn be the first in almost a decade, if he were to sign for Atlanta?

+100 to both of you.

I take it you’re friends with Merlin Olson?

Totally different subject

Anyone notice that gondeee bumped the FanShots section to be right underneath the FanPosts? Awesome.

I did indeed

but the last few fanshots have been completely ignored anyway. Well … almost completely.

my one friend who is a phillies fan (AND A PROFESSIONAL WRITER) is attempting to rationalize this by saying “he’s a great clubhouse guy”, “he doesn’t strike out 160 times per year”, and “manny is worse defensively”. hilarious

BIG JOE SUCK ONE

Hey now.

He’s a good guy, been one of my favorites on the Mariners for the last two years, but he can’t play in the field anymore. I’m glad we didn’t sign him, but he is still a good guy.

by Perrinbar on Dec 12, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

we need a decent LHS

jwrocks is right. We need a decent lefty starter or two to match up against the Phillies.

Even at his best, Chuck James gives up too many fly balls for us to put him out there in Philly. He has given up more dingers to Philly than any other team over the last three years.

Reyes and Glavine are at the extreme ends of the baseball lifespan, one young and unproven, the other old and unhealthy.

The Braves could have a very impressive array of righty starters by the end of this summer, but unless we have a lefty or two to run against the Phillies, they’ll be the ones still playing in October.

Yes, that is Mark Redman.

BIG JOE SUCK ONE

by bigjoe on Dec 12, 2008 1:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not as simple as that. Have you even taken the time to look at the split stats for the pitchers we have? I just looked at Jurrjens stats from last year and Vazquez’s career stats and they’re completely capable of shutting down a hitter no matter what side of the plate he steps into the batters box on. An impressive righty starter is better than a mediocre lefty starter.

I guess I should be one to talk.

?

“An impressive righty starter is better than a mediocre lefty starter.” The hell he is! It’s been well-established that no matter what the so-called “talent difference” is between the two, a LHP’s lefthandedness makes your rotation better. Period.

But seriously, I totally agree with your analysis. Keep up the good work. Perhaps we can kill this notion some day.

by buzzdeadwax on Dec 12, 2008 2:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Macay McBride once got out of a bases-loaded jam by outing Ryan Howard, thus proving that all lefties are always effective against the best of lefty hitters. Duh.

My objection with the constant notion is the way people phrase it. We do not need a lefty for the sake of having a lefty. Having an effective lefty would be nice, but currently, there are none available, except maybe the age and injury risk Randy Johnson, and with Sabathia being signed, so I guess I’d like to see the aspirations people have in mind when they paraphrase that we “need” a lefty.

by royhobbs on Dec 12, 2008 2:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This will all balance out in a few years, since all our pitching prospects in A ball are lefthanded.

by 10-4 on Dec 12, 2008 2:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

+1 for balance

by buzzdeadwax on Dec 12, 2008 3:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How do you balance out a five-man rotation?

Have a #1 and #2 caliber righty and lefty pitchers, and have a 5th pitcher that stunk so bad you want them out of the rotation, thus creating true balance. Fung shui!

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Dec 12, 2008 3:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s better to have an effective lefty in the bullpen to use in late-inning situations against Utley/Howard/Ibanez. Fortunately, the braves appear to be stocking up on guys who can potentially fill that role. The downside is, if Ohman isn’t re-signed, the only one of those guys who can also get RH hitters out is Gonzalez.

by buzzdeadwax on Dec 12, 2008 3:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Despite the fact that Ibanez is vastly overrated by the ESPN crowd, this is a good deal for the Phillies

Not the best they could have made, but a good one nonetheless. I don’t know why Burrell wasn’t re-upped, it would have made for a more balanced lineup as he’s a righty, but oh well. Ibanez should be worth 6 WAR over this deal, and that’s the kind of money he got.

by BraveBronco0121 on Dec 12, 2008 4:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ibanez is horrible defensively and costs about 2 wins a season. and he’s entering his decline phase. so yeah.

I couldn’t be more pleased that he signed with the Phillies. Acutally, the only thing that would have made me happier is if he signed with the Mets. Either way, those two wins or so he costs his team (that bigjoe mentioned) won’t be coming off our ledger.

/sigh of relief
