Wrapping up the Braves Wednesday Overnights

Not too much gonig on last night, unless you count the continuing A.J. Burnett bloviating.

  • K-Ros reports that the Braves talks with Burnett's agents "progressed through the night," but the Braves are still only offering four guaranteed years with an easily attainable vesting option for the fifth year. He says the Yankees are in the same neighborhood... for now.
  • ESPN is reporting that the Yankees have already gone to five years on Burnett. If that's the case, then why is this thing still going on?
  • Apparently a bunch of Yankees' players are calling Burnett to try and convince him to join the team. C'mon Chipper, he's your friend, put the full court press on him!
  • The Braves may be formulating backup plans, and have reportedly expressed some interest in Derek Lowe.
  • Apparently, the re-claim of Jairo Cuevas by the Royals didn't go over too well in some Braves circles. It is a very odd re-move.
  • We could be seeing a lot of Mark Teixeira, as the Nationals are actively bidding on his services.
  • Former Braves farmhand and seventh-round draft pick, Brett Evert, is now the regional scouting supervisor for the Braves in the Northwest.

I'll have a Rule 5 Draft open thread up at 10am, the draft starts at 11:30am.

Time to put the press on Sheets, because Burnett will be a Yankee. No doubt in my mind, and I hope that I am right. If Wren goes over $90mil/5yrs I will be pissed.

So we have to go for Sheets now, who I am actually higher on at this point than Lowe or Burnett anyway. Full. Court. Press. Old Pitino Kentucky style.

I just hope the Braves don’t have to go back to Towers…

Ugh, not Lowe!

I don’t see why we’d want to go after Lowe, who wants a 5 year deal when he’s already 52.

Sheets and Dunn. Make it happen, Frank.

Well...

personally, I think Lowe is a far better bet to retain his value for four years than Burnett. I wouldn’t give either of them five year deals though.

I’m just wary of guys putting up great numbers in pitcher’s parks, though with a guy like Peavy it’s obvious he’s a stud. Lowe is an innings eater for sure, but we got that in Vazquez and we need a staff ace (which I don’t personally think Lowe is).

Derek Lowe is definitely more of an ace than Burnett (but lets face it though, Hudson is our ace). Lowe has the experience of being one in Los Angeles, has the experience of winning in the postseason with Boston and L.A., and is a workhorse innings-eater who isn’t a power pitcher.. isnt likely to blow out his arm or something throwing 95mph for 200 innings a year. I’d rather have Lowe than Burnett, if we have to choose one, and I’d rather have both over Sheets (guy neeeeeds to prove he can stay healthy for two seasons), and if we have to accept that we cant have Peavy.. I say let the Yankees take Burnett and make him a #2 or #3. We’ll take Lowe for 3 years.

and just how...

do you think the Braves will get Lowe? As far as I am aware, the Braves have not offered Lowe or expressed interest in him.

I say go for Sheets.

That’s great for Brett Evert, he’s a good guy. The only year I ever went all the way down there for a fan fest he was signing at a table and called me over from like 20 yards away.

Peavy?

My secret hope is that Wren and Towers have been chatting or will be very very soon…

i can’t wait to intentionally walk tex 20 times a year to get to nick johnson, assuming his leg doesn’t break again.

I probably care about sports way too much. Like, waaaaaaaaay too much.

According to reporters (via MLBTR), the Padres-Cubs deal is dead…the Cubs pulled out*. Add to that the report that the Yankees have offered Burnett $85 million over 5 years, maybe Wren calls Towers on the phone and starts talks up again. I honestly can’t take this obsessive pressing of the “refresh” button much longer.

*usually, that’s not a good thing. Today it might be.

I hope not

I lost all faith in Peavy during this. Maybe that’s not fair, judging him on where he wants to play and having to agree to his demands to waive the NTC, but oh well – it’s how I feel. I’d like nothing more than to see Peavy get “Stuck” in SD all year on that horrible, horrible team. He needs to learn a lesson, be careful what you wish for.

That and the fact Towers would be constantly getting an earful about the budget.

What I'm suspecting

They’ll just keep Peavy to give San Diego fans just one more reason to root for what seems to be an upcoming abysmal season, let him pad all the stats he wants, and when the trade deadline comes around, see if there are any desperate contenders willing to part with some high prospects for a win-now, over-the-top trade. It’s a gamble, but one worth taking if there is an intense division race going on anywhere.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Completely agree

Towers has absolute no leverage at this point. Forcing Jake to pitch on this team for a half year will go a long way towards making him “see the light”. This could help Towers gain leverage if Jake finally realizes he needs to open us his “fav team” list a little. That and the fact that some team is almost guaranteed to be looking for a starter come trade deadline.

The only question is whether their budget will allow for this.
