2008 Rule 5 Draft Open Thread
The 2008 Rule 5 Draft will take place today from 11:30am to 3:00pm ET. It is apparently going to be covered live on MLB.com, but I'm not sure if you'll have to pay or not.
Baseball America has a list of all the players who are available to be drafted here. Notable Braves include:
- Sung Ki Jung, RHP - a funky sidearm delivery reliever could intrigue some
- Zach Schreiber, RHP - I guess if anyone wanted him, they would have picked him up last year when the Braves put him on waivers
- Jonny Venters, LHP - after a good showing in the HWB league, someone might take a flier on him
- Matt Young, OF - speedy young outfielder put up great numbers in the AFL, and someone might think he's turned a corner and can contribute on a ML club
There might be some other guys that teams are interested in. Heck, last year the Reds took pitcher Sergio Valenzuela from the Braves, after he hadn't pitched above hi-A barely half a season. Of course, that didn't end well.
Baseball America also has some possible selections.

I saw that list on Baseball America last night and it’s nuts. That’s a ton of work figuring all that out.
Plenty of decent names on there, but a guy I didn’t even know was available was the one who stuck out the most to me. Jack Spradlin, a lefty with the Nationals is a darn good pitcher and a great guy and though it probably won’t happen, I’d be pretty happy if he got picked, especially by the Braves.
Jack was part of the Potomac Nationals team that beat out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for the Carolina League Championship. He was pretty excited when I told him that Jason Heyward was one of the top five prospects in baseball; Jack came in twice just to face Heyward and struck him out on four pitches each time. The huge difference in age and experience had nothing to do with it…
Maybe they thought they were close to acquiring Burnett, only to be beaten out by The Yanks’ reported 5 year, $85 million offer. Sigh, who knows.

So how does this work?
These guys that are eligible for the rule 5 draft…..if they aren’t taken in the draft, do they become free agents or just remain with the organization?
I just hope the Burnett thing ends today…either way….maybe we can get back on the Peavy bandwagon….the higher Burnett’s price range goes the more Peavy sounds good. If trading Esco and a couple prospects nets us a stud-ace then so be it…Maybe we can get Giles as well to play left and find a right-handed hitting CF/RF as our “#4 hole hitter” that Wren wants…..having Giles and his .375 OBP at the number 2 slot in front of Chipper would be awesome…sorry, I’m just throwing stuff out, highly unlikely it’ll happen or needs to happen for that matter.
The Mets just selected OF Carl Loadenthal in the AAA phase, which means he is now a Met, as players selected in the AAA phase just change teams, they don’t have to stay at any level for the whole season.
Venters
I hope that we don’t lose Venters—I think that he has a real shot to pitch in the majors and I would like to see him get his chance with the Braves….
