Not as much scuttlebut last night as there was on Monday night.
Jon Heyman at SI.com says the Yankees are going after C.C., A.J., and Lowe, and had this to say about their most recent offer to Burnett:
About a half-dozen teams are vying for the talented Burnett, but the Yankees topped the Braves' $60 million, four-year offer that included a vesting option for a fifth year by a few million dollars and they might also consider guaranteeing a fifth year.
It's looks more and more that the Braves will HAVE to guarantee a fifth year, and may even have to go up to $16M per to secure the services of A.J. Burnett. The Yankees are dead set on outbidding everyone. Meanwhile, K-Ros has an interesting tidbit about the differences between Burnett and Ben Sheets:
While A.J. Burnett is getting a lot of the attention and Ben Sheets' offers seem to be on a lower scale, Sheets could be less of a health risk between the two free-agent pitchers.
Over the past eight seasons, Sheets has made 30 more starts than Burnett (221 to 191) and pitched 175 2/3 more innings.
Sheets pitched through a torn forearm muscle down the stretch in 2008, and his performance suffered, but he is said to be completely healed.
In fairness, Burnett was out virtually an entire season because of TJ surgery, but both have had their nagging injury problems.
No bites on another Braves-White Sox trade:
A rumor linking the Braves to having serious interest in Dye on Tuesday doesn't stand up presently, with the White Sox not having talked to Atlanta since the Vazquez deal.
D-Fab also has a column up that shoots down the Francoeur-Greinke rumors once more... but I'm sure they'll float back to the surface in a few weeks.
There were a lot of rumors yesterday... it was a lot of fun... and almost every one of them were shot down later in the day. Remember to keep everything that is whispered in perspective as they may just be the machinations of a drunk and busted beat writer.

I wish more players were like Maddux
But that’s like wishing for world peace, flying cars, and two chicks who would do a dude without a million bucks.
Seriously though, I’m under the mindset that one should enjoy what they do for a living. It’s no secret that New York is the city where their players are scrutinized on their failures, and where people wait for the other shoe to drop on their successes. It’s clear that everyone signs with them because the dollar amounts are so high, and yeah, it will help pad their future lifestyles. Why anyone would want to live under a microscope for five years when other options for not quite such ridiculous amounts but still very generous and more than any us plebeians see in our lifetimes.
But it’s not like other teams are offering hot dogs compared to New York’s filet mignon. It’s just numbers at this point, and often, people have to ask “what difference does another $3 million make when you’ve already got 70?”
I’m also curious to what kind of sales pitches teams are making to the players, and not the agents. The agents clearly only see the numbers, but the players themselves shouldn’t be so closed to the rest of the league when it comes to scouting out future residences. Back to Maddux, even though he was represented by Scott Boras, he still saw what the city of Atlanta had to offer him and his family, and it turned out that he liked what he saw more than New York. And in the end, took less money to pitch for the Braves, which he did quite magnificently. Somehow, I don’t see Burnett doing similarly, although it would be commendable if he did.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Now that the Yanks have gotten C.C., maybe they’ll cool off a bit in chasing Burnett. They can’t seriously be trying to sign C.C., Burnett and Lowe for the kind of money it would take, can they? Oh yeah, its the Yankees…I guess they can.

Oh god, you’re advocating a bidding war now when we’re already going to be overpaying for Burnett? I could see an argument for that approach if we’re literally 3 wins from a playoff spot, but we’re not. I can’t see how anyone can reasonably advocate guaranteeing Burnett $15 million a year when he’s 36 just to get him signed. Let the Yankees overpay him and get stuck with another long-term deal that will hinder their ability to compete in the last few years of the contract. Keep the financial flexibility for next year or next summer.
