Twins interested in Escobar

http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/34127394.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUnciaec8O7EyUsr

I really wouldnt want anything to do with their offense unless it was Mauer or Morneau and possibly Delmon Young(probably not).

Is there any chance we could get Baker or Slowey. I'm sure there is no way we could Liriano but maybe with Escobar and a prospect we could get Baker or Slowey.

Do we have another ML ready shortstop I’m not aware of? Moving Yunel would create a giant hole.

Not really but...

there are other possibilities like Furcal, Renteria, Cabrera as FAs or mayber Hardy or Jack Wilson as trade candidates.

by DMac142005 on Nov 8, 2008 1:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Furcal – Nice..but no. He’s going to be too expensive and he’s said he’d like to remain in LA
Renteria – Not getting any younger, range is shot. On the serious decline.
Cabrera – see Renteria

The only one i really like is Hardy, but what would we have to give to get him.
What else would we do if FW does trade Escobar, its pretty much down to these guys.

by DMac142005 on Nov 8, 2008 1:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd think..

..that they would go with an internal option – Lillibridge before going out on the trade market for a Shortstop. But honestly I don’t think this rumor has any legs to it what so ever.

by RainDelay on Nov 8, 2008 1:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Escobar to the Twins?

The only players I would consider is Mauer or Young like DMac142005 mentioned. I am not to famaliar with the Twins farm system but other then that I dont see the Braves making a trade.
The main focus is a ready major leaguer pitcher and that is Jake Peavy.

Wouldn't be an issue if we had...

… Evlis Andrus still in the pipeline.

That said, I’ll take Nick Blackburn and Kevin Slowey for Escobar.

- Oh, Bobby. -

by sdp on Nov 8, 2008 2:16 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually it would be..

…have you seen the #’s Andrus has put up this year?

No. Thanks.

I’d rather take the risk that Lillibridge’s 2008 was an aberration, and that he’ll bounce back offensively in 2009.

by RainDelay on Nov 8, 2008 2:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don’t listen to RainDelay. Andrus is a stud prospect for Texas and at the age of 20 completed an entire season at AA batting .295 with a .350 Obp and 54 steals and was chosen for the future-stars game at Yankee stadium. He’s still young at 20, but he’ll be up before long. I wish we did still have him. We have nothing in our SS pipeline.

by BravesFan on Nov 8, 2008 2:41 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not taking sides, but he is right… by all accounts Andrus looks like a stud so far

SLG under .400. OPS of .616 in the winter league. BB/K of .42. BABIP of .357. K rate of 18.9

…should i continue?

by bigjoe on Nov 8, 2008 7:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.

You’re judging him on 58 AB. His whole make up compares favorably with Rafael Furcal when he was with Atl. Same sort of speed, defense, and offense. He wouldn’t be ready for next season so that would be an issue, but I disagree with the assessment that he’s not a valuable prospect or that he can’t succeed in the majors.

by soup du jour on Nov 8, 2008 7:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The numbers bigjoe posted are VERY similar to Andrus’ minor league career numbers, that’s over 1500 AB’s. He may compare favorably to what Furcal did in the minors but these numbers don’t come close to proving Andrus will perform similarly in the majors. Furcal basically came out of nowhere and far exceeded what he did in the minors. No one is saying Andrus doesn’t have the chance to do the same, but his current numbers indicate he is a backup at best.

by scstrato on Nov 8, 2008 8:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, the only numbers from the winter league i posted was the one that said “in the winter league”. everything else was from his season in the texas league.

by bigjoe on Nov 8, 2008 9:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ah, ok.

I stand corrected. Still, I’m in the camp that thinks he gets the benefit of the doubt for being young for his level, as well as having the scouts on his side. You’re probably right in him probably needing to put up decent offensive numbers next year to be considered a good prospect anymore, but I still think he has a lot of room to grow.

by soup du jour on Nov 8, 2008 11:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My ONLY position on Andrus is that he hasn’t proven himself YET. I can’t argue against him having the potential to be better than what he’s shown so far, especially considering his age/level.

My biggest concern with him is the fact he hasn’t had success yet. I would guess it’s hard for a prospect this young to hear over and over how good you are only to put up average numbers. I certainly hope Texas repeats him at AA this year, it’s my opinion this is his best chance at a breakout year.

by scstrato on Nov 9, 2008 12:29 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I do hope Hicks develops into something next year as I do like his ability to walk, but I think he’s got the same problem as Lillibridge and unable to cut down on his swing. He’s only had 54 ABs above high A and he’s already 23. He hit .234 in A+ with 122 SOs. We’ll see what he does in 09 in AA for a full season with players more his age. I don’t have high expectations but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he fixes the holes in his swing.

by BravesFan on Nov 8, 2008 9:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bingo! That was a very level headed, intelligent, evidenced response. More of this and people might actually start taking you seriously.

by scstrato on Nov 8, 2008 9:41 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why do you always have to respond to my posts??? You lose every single argument with me. Don’t be mad.

by BravesFan on Nov 8, 2008 9:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m not mad. I’m as happy as a dung beetle on an elephant farm that you actually supported your claim. I thought it was a well articulated point and felt you should be commended for a change.

As for losing arguments … we’ll, I’ll let the rest of the community decide that one.

by scstrato on Nov 8, 2008 9:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was actually 3 sentences, but who’s counting right? By the way, I don’t need scstrato’s backhanded complements. Thanks again.

by BravesFan on Nov 8, 2008 10:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And you complained about me...

..being a dick. How about you? Maybe I should flag all of your posts as “Troll” until you learn to play nice with others. Because I’m sure that Gondee will get tired of your crap just like the rest of us.

by RainDelay on Nov 8, 2008 10:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If you’re willing to lie, how does that make you credible?

by BravesFan on Nov 8, 2008 10:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As far as I'm concerned....

..you are being a troll. You want to debate and then as soon as someone defeats what you’ve said, you resort to name calling and then doing what a troll does to get under someones skin just so you can turn around and call them out for being a dick or other wise.

I’ve already flagged you for being inappropriate, twice. And will continue to do so until something is done about it, and by it I mean you.

I’ve been a member of TC far far far longer that you have, that I’m sure of. And I really don’t care if YOU think I’m credible.

Please show me where I’ve called anyone a name. Everything is in writing here.

It’ll be dealt with soon enough.

But for now, I’m done with you. As I’m sure a lot are around here.

i’m gonna have to side with raindelay on this one. because, you know, he’s been around the block.

As both a Braves and a Twins fan...

I’ve been thinking about how the teams match up. The Twins do have one too many corner outfielders, and they’ve also got a surplus of young starters, but both teams are heavy on left handed hitters, so the Braves want to trade KJ, and the Twins want Escobar.

I’m sure the Twins are interested in Escobar, but I don’t think they’ll give up what the Braves would want to get him. Liriano’s not available, and I don’t think Baker or Slowey are either. I bet they’d trade Blackburn or Perkins for him, but I don’t think the Braves would.

The only trade I could really see them make is Lillibridge for Boof Bonser, or maybe Michael Cuddyer. Failed prospect for failed prospect, or failed prospect for large contract. (assuming Lilly is regarded as a failed prospect)

Here’s some Twins the Braves might be interested in who might be available:

MICHAEL CUDDYER – He’s got like 2yr/20m left on his contract. He was hurt last year so his numbers were way down, but when healthy he’s a decent RH corner outfielder. Decent power, decent avg, decent eye, decent defense (below avg range, but ridiculous arm).

DELMON YOUNG – Jeff Francoeur. Nuff said. I would love to see him traded to any team other than the Braves.

NICK BLACKBURN – RH, Threw 190 innings as a rookie this year, and pitched a gem in the one game playoff with the Sox. A non-fat version of Carlos Silva, which is good so long as you don’t pay him 12m/y. Success is heavily defense dependent.

GLEN PERKINS – LH. Threw 185 innings as a rookie this year. Threw only 50 due to shoulder injury last year. Never threw more than 135. Sucked near the end of the season. Struggled after 75 pitches. Should be better next year when he’s a year further away from the injury.

BOOF BONSER – RH. His stuff is way better than his numbers. Other than Liriano and Nathan, I think he’s got the best pure stuff on the team. He just doesn’t get results. He’s out of options and the Twins have too many good young starters to keep him in the rotation, so unless he gets traded, he’s stuck in the pen.

PHILIP HUMBER – RH. They got him in the Santana trade. I don’t know much about him besides that he’s out of options and he looked good out of the pen late this year. That’s probably where he’ll be this year too unless he’s traded.

BRIAN DUENSING – LH. Don’t know much about him either. But he has a decent track record of succeeding in the minors without dominating, and no where to play. Struggled this year in AAA. Could be a good buy low opportunity depending on scouting reports. I don’t know his option status.

by OldDutchPots on Nov 8, 2008 2:48 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Boof Bonser and Nick Blackburn are great pitcher. Love the way they go about the game. I don’t see the Braves making any kind of trade with the Twins, but those two are something else. And Delmon Young is a touch crazy, but he’s very talented.
And Glen Perkins can rot in hell. Screw that guy.

by cbwilk on Nov 9, 2008 4:20 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the same boof bonser who has a career ERA of over 5 and a career WHIP of over 1.4? that boof bonser?

by bigjoe on Nov 9, 2008 5:56 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sure, I guess. I don’t know his numbers. I know Boof can pitch. I know he’s young. I believe in Rodger McDowell. Again, I don’t think we’re making any trades with the Twins any time soon, but I like Boof and he’d be a welcome addition to me.

by cbwilk on Nov 9, 2008 6:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lili for Boof straight up? I’d do that in a heartbeat. My only concession being that Lili is not packaged in a deal for Peavy.

i’d approve of blackburn or baker. everyone else is uh, not worth trading for aside from the obvious guys that minny would never, ever do.
