Bloody Murder

Jake Peavy and his agent have essentially made the point that any trade with the Braves would likely weaken the Braves to the point where Peavy would not want to pitch for them:

The subject of Escobar came up Thursday morning between Peavy and his agent, Barry Axelrod. Less than 12 hours earlier, Axelrod had met with Padres General Manager Kevin Towers to get an update on trade talks that had taken place the previous three days at the GM meetings in Dana Point.

“Escobar's a pretty good player,” Axelrod said. “To be honest, Jake and I have said, 'If that kind of trade gets made, who plays short for them?'” [...]

“One of the things we will want to look at some point is, 'Who are you giving up? How much are you weakening your team to make this deal?'” Axelrod said. “If Team X trades three starting pitchers and a starting shortstop to get Jake Peavy, that lessens their chance of being a successful team.

That's what I've been getting at for the past few weeks. Not only this point of trading away established major leaguers, but it's also important to note that trading away the prospects who are ready to contribute will hurt the team's chances of competing long term.

I appreciate a player who understands that it's not just about one guy on a team... it's about a team. Peavy understood this when he signed a below market value contract to stay in San Diego last year. It's hard to tell if this is Peavy trying to steer the Braves away from the inclusion of Escobar, or if he's trying to steer the Padres away from the Braves. Or is he really just being an overly nosy good steward of this trade which he has the full ability to block if he doesn't like one little thing about it.

While I can appreciate a player who wants to be this involved, we really haven't talked about the fact that if the Braves collapse around Peavy next year or the following year, then WE will have to go through this same hassle the Padres are going through if we want to trade him -- he will retain his full no-trade clause. This is exactly why John Schuerholz never gave any free agent a no-trade clause.

For the record, I just don't get the warm and fuzzies about this trade as it has been rumored to be constructed.

Seems like he doesn't want to leave San Diego

That’s why he signed the extension. He’s obviously comfortable there, and figures that if he’s going to be on a sucky team, he’d rather that sucky team be in San Diego.

This might help

the braves retain Esco. Maybe the Fathers will take KJ instead.

by dmack on Nov 7, 2008 4:36 PM EST   0 recs

probably not. they apparently have a young second baseman who is ready to step in at the major league level.

Matt Antonelli

…I had said in a previous thread, that if we were going to give up Esco or KJ that I’d want either Antonelli or Chase Headly. Watched a great deal of them this year here in Portland (Triple A), even though Antonelli’s stats looked like shit this year – he’s a star. Same with Headly – had a great year in Triple A though and not to mention playing LF for the first time. He’s a natural 3B.

+1 on Chase Headley

I saw that guy more frequently than anyone else not a Brave this season (In San Diego, AAA-Las Vegas vs. Portland, and in DC again), and all he did was produce. He’d be a great acquisition to eventually take over at 3B.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I hate to say it ...

but i’m really starting to get turned off on the Peavy thing. I’ve been a big proponent so far, but he and his agents meddling AND the inclusion of Escobar is just too much for me. I say toss out KJ, Morton/Reyes, Schafer and one more lower level prospect and say take it or leave it. Then walk away when Towers mentions the Cubs again.

You and me are in the exact same boat.

Just Thinking Out Loud Here

Let me first say that, while I am truly excited about the possibility of acquiring Jake Peavy from the Padres, I am hesitant to deal Yunel Escobar to get him, much like everyone else around here has stated, to some degree. But that’s exactly what the rumors are suggesting might happen, so let’s start from there.

Ok, assuming the Braves complete a trade for Peavy, and Escobar is included in it, we will have an obvious, glaring hole at shortstop, which is what this fuss is all about. We also are aware that there is a spot open in left field, where everyone is assuming Atlanta will find a “power” bat to hit behind Chipper in the clean up spot. However, as has been discussed around here ad nauseam, nobody is really thrilled with the free agent options for LF (ie. Burrell, Dunn, Ibanez et al), and trading for one doesn’t seem likely (ie. Holliday, Ludwick).

So here’s an idea, which I’m not sure how I feel about yet, and was wondering what the rest of ya’ll thought of: what about trading for Houston shortstop Miguel Tejada?

Now, I haven’t read or heard about any rumors involving Tejada, and I’m not really sure the Astros are even interested in trading him, but they have a ton of money committed to a few players next season and their minor league system is fairly weak in general, so a trade might benefit them.

I won’t even speculate on what the Braves would offer in return, I just wanted to put my idea in writing. Miggy isn’t going to lead all shortstops in home runs, but he does possess some power. He can bat fourth in the order, and we can target a different set of players for LF (ie. a Juan Rivera reclamation project, a current roster player such as Blanco or Anderson, or my preference would be Xavier Nady since the Yankees have an excess of OFs). His defense isn’t anything to write hope about, but its not terrible either. Granted, I don’t have any stats to support this, and I know RainDelay, 17843, or even gondeee will probably crucify me for that, but it’s just the impression I get that seems to be the general consensus around baseball. Tejada only has one year left on his contract, so there wouldn’t be any long term commitment for Atlanta to absorb. Other free agent shortstops have been mentioned, most notably former Braves Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria, but it seems like there’s a mutual interest in Furcal returning to the Dodgers, and we would have some competition in trying to sign Renteria. Some might argue that we should use our in-house option and play Brent Lillibridge, but it doesn’t seem he has progressed to being a MLB-caliber shortstop we thought he might become. Other potential trade options at short won’t thrill anyone either; the only one’s I can think that will be FAs in 2010 besides Tejada are Bobby Crosby, Jack Wilson, and Khalil Greene, and I doubt anyone wants a part of that trio.

So go ahead, let me have it. Thoughts? Comments? Arguments? Insults?

He actually had a good season defensively, but that .307 OBP away from Houston is enough for me to say ‘no thanks’. Not to mention that there’s no reason to throw prospects away on a guy for one year when we’re probably not even going to be in contention next year anyways.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Sorry dude, I’d have to say no to Tejada as well. I’d rather see them bring Renteria back, personally, but he is bound to have some suitors and I think I saw somewhere that he might go back to the Cards. Everything seems to be rumored right now, though.

No to Tejada. He’s older than dirt now and only hit 13 homers in Houston last year.

by dwbrave on Nov 7, 2008 6:28 PM EST   0 recs

who the hell knows how old he is.

"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."

Unless the Braves know something about Esco that I don’t, forget any idea of trading him unless we are getting an All-Star SS somewhere else. We have no one adequate in our system, with Andrus gone, and I’d rather go with the pitching we have while adding a slugging LF than strip our system and our SS for a pitcher.

BTW, I think that was extremely mature of Peavey. He wants to win, not end up in another franchise just getting by. Without Esco, our lineup would really be hurting.

I’m never big on trading for veteran pitching anyway. They always seem to get hurt.

We Will.

Offer what we feel we can give and nothing more. Complaining about rumored packages is just silly. And yes, we get that you’re against a trade for Peavy. If/When we acquire him, I expect you to complain about what we gave up. I trust Wren, as he has yet to do anything to cripple our franchise; on the whole, he’s been a net positive as our GM and I will trust him until that changes.

Peavy Will Likely Be A Cub

I get the feeling that Peavy would rather play for a contender, than the Atlanta Braves right now. Cubs are starting to get confident that a deal gets done, and that their offer surpasses the Braves. I would love to get Peavy, but I don’t want to give up Escobar, and Shafer and Hernandez.. Who would play Short stop and CF. Blanco or Anderson is not a longterm answer. This has gone on too long, and I think it is time to move in another direction. Peavy is good, but not worth the wait and the drama. I think we should save the prospects, go after Lowe (costs nothing but money), and then try a Vasquez, Slowey or Baker as our number two. Then get that big bat for left field, and please god just say no to Scott Olsen.

by tennesseejed on Nov 8, 2008 5:37 PM EST   0 recs

Why would the Cubs be a more likely contender than the Braves?

This year marked the first time since 1907-08 that they made the playoffs in back to back years. They are guaranteed to choke in the playoffs. Does Peavy think that we’re gonna trade for him and call it a day? We’re not getting him to say “well we have an ace, that should do it.” I’m sure Wren is ready to get this over with so he can get on with the team’s other needs.

by 10-4 on Nov 8, 2008 9:24 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

the cubs have no pieces to get him. if he goes to the cubs, its gonna be for a deal that gives san diego 50 cents on the dollar, centered around felix pie.

+1

That’s exactly right. This whole media frenzy over who is the current favorite is nothing more than Towers playing the field to get the best offer, which is absolutely in his best intrerest (can’t fault him there). That’s why I say put down an offer, give them a timeline and then move on when he continues with the whole “well I like what the cubs are offering…”. Wren knows we have the best offer and I just don’t see him budging from it. Towers knows it too, but that’s not going to stop him from trying to “pressure” Wren into giving more.
