Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

The Jake Peavy trade talks: Padres general manager Kevin Towers has said that if San Diego can't get value for the right-hander commensurate for his remarkable track record, then it is prepared to keep the 2007 Cy Young Award winner. But there is suspicion among rival executives that given the Padres' move to cut payroll, and given that the divorce of owner John Moores is driving uncertainty within the organization, the team might be forced to trade Peavy, even if it winds up taking 85 cents or 90 cents on the dollar in value. The Padres' efforts are greatly complicated by the fact that Peavy can use his no-trade clause to steer the conversations, or stall them altogether.

So at some point, the Braves and Padres may well strike a deal built around shortstop Yunel Escobar, center fielder Jordan Schaefer, pitcher Charlie Morton, and one more pitching prospect. The Padres are known to have interest in left-hander Jeff Locke, a 20-year-old who pitched in Single-A last season.

Jordan Schafer

I don’t think trading Schafer is such a good idea. I wouldn’t trade him for just anybody, and I certainly wouldn’t trade him in a package with Escobar.

Same. The Braves were an excellent defensive team last year and that should continue into the future. Trading two amazing defensive players would gut that.

You lost me at “via Buster Olney.”

True, and can they seriously not bother to spell these guy’s games correctly? I mean really. Olney butchers Schafer and Rosenthal is writing about Derek Lillibridge. These guys get paid for their knowledge of baseball?

Trade

Thats hardly 85 cents on the dollar—take Schafer out and it might make sense. I am guessing that if it the trade involves Escobar than Rohrbough and a less prospect might get the deal done.

I would certainly trade Schafer before I parted with Escobar….

Are they serious???

This just sounds stupid to me. I understand that they are itching to get Yunel but if you take him out of the deal it sounds a little bit more reasonable even if it is unrealistic that they would want it.

Yunel – He is a potential all star that still has a ton of room to get better over the next few years. One of the best arms in the league and an intensity that I would hate to lose.

Schafer – This guy was talked about non stop over the past couple of years about how he was going to bring so much to this franchise. I can’t believe that he has lost that much clout because of his steroid suspension.

Morton – Has his stock dropped off that much since the end of the year. He had a mediocre intro the the bigs but he is another one that had a lot of hype and stats to show it coming out of the minors. I still have to believe that he can be a very good middle of the rotation guy.

So we are discussing all of these guys AND another pitching prospect?!?!? I believe that I will take my chances with thie young crop of talent that we already have.

Schafer’s star has definitely fallen a bit in the public eye, but I’m sure that many teams still see the potential there. He still had a heck of a year at AA…even after struggling so badly after his suspension. His overall numbers weren’t too different from the previous year.

Morton actually showed me a lot this year. I firmly believe that he is an excellent pitcher…he just needs to learn to keep his head in the game and not get frazzled so easily. His stuff certainly can be filthy.

Its the pitching, stupid!

I know everyone seems to be up in arms over Yunel possibly being included, but what do you expect to pay for Jake Peavy? 27 year old Cy Young winner who will be under contract for 4 years. Believe me, I’d rather send them Prado, Blanco and Jo Jo, but it wont happen. We need Peavy, we dont have a legitmate ace anymore, and if we want to compete, thats what its going to take.

You better either have a Cole Hamels like the Phillies or a deep, deep, talented rotation like the Rays.
