Raul Ibanez? Really?
In reading over MLBTR's list of the top-50 free agents and where they might end up, it jumped out at me that Dierkes listed Ben Sheets and Raul Ibanez as guys who he thinks will end up signing with the Braves. Sheets I'm okay with, injuries and all, but Ibanez. Really?
To me he seems like trade-slash-free-agent option 4c. Then I read this from Peter Gammons today:
Raul Ibanez. His 338 RBIs the past three years are more than Ramirez (311), Teixeira (336) or Vladimir Guerrero; he is a leader, a tremendous person and a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat. It's nice that such a good person will get paid.
Legitimate middle-of-the-order bat? Really? I would have thought that a legitimate middle-of-the-order guy would have hit 30 homeruns more than once in his career. And don't think for a minute that Seattle's home park -- often considered a pitcher's park -- has anything to do with his lack of power. He has 90 career homeruns at home and 92 on the road; and an identical career batting average of .286 both at home and away.
It's pretty safe to say that Ibanez is a solid .280, 25 homerun, 105 RBI, 105 strikeout guy. In looking over the rest of his splits, they're so damn even across the board that Ibanez might be the most even keeled (read boring) hitter in baseball.
Still, he just doesn't seem like that "impact" bat we need. For some reason I'm fixated on the Braves acquiring Magglio Ordonez. And really he's probably not that much of a better hitter, but for me he's a guy who would make our lineup a bit more feared by opposing pitchers.
Ken Rosenthal says that the Mets tried to acquire Ibanez last July and maintin a strong interest in the outfielder. Raul Ibanez was born in New York City... that seems like a better fit.
And all of the above is just looking at his hitting... his fielding on the other hand... oof!

HOLY GOD, HE’S A GOOD PERSON! GIVE HIM 12 MILL A YEAR!
i will put my head through a wall if that waste of a roster spot is wearing a tomahawk on his chest next year.

Well, unless we are planning to implement the DH rule just for us.
We shouldn’t sign him as anything but a bench bat. He is absolutely atrocious in left field. He is one of the worst defending outfielders around, mostly because his legs are gone. He’d make a good DH, but unless I missed the memo, we aren’t switching leagues.

Ibanez is one of the worst fielders in baseball and gives most of his value at the plate back when he’s playing left.

Alternative
OK. Who would you guys like to see playing LF for the Braves next year?
Available Free Agents- Burrell, Dunn, Ibanez, Ramirez (not going to happen)
Of those three I would prefer Dunn because he is younger and more durable. None are very good at all defensively.
If this Peavy thing materializes, we will have traded some of our prospects. This makes it highly unlikely that we would trade more to acquire an impact OF bat.

Assuming that the braves dont have to give up much if they take on a considerable portion of his salary? That could work.

He is always hurt. Was recently diagnosed with a disorder that causes extreme fatigue. Plus, he does not really qualify as the power hitting OF that this team needs in the middle of their lineup.
Surely we can do better than that.

that disorder really did him in after he came back this season, didn’t it?

Baldelli
The problem with Baldelli is that he can’t be counted on to start 150 games a year. The way I understand it is that his condition physically won’t allow him to. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but at this point all I think he can be is the best damn 4th outfielder in the game who plays 70 games or so. We need something more reliable.

On top of that...
he never walks, has less than optimal power for a corner OF, strikes out in 20% of his plate appearances, and doesn’t hit many line drives. In short, he won’t hit for high average, he won’t draw walks, he won’t hit 20 home runs, and he can’t be counted on to play all year. I’d almost rather have Francoeur.

Is probably in a state of shock by now. He wants to just say NO again, but at this point, he’s so blinded with irritation at the redundancy of constant suggestions to bring Raul Ibañez to Atlanta, that he’s probably having seizures.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Next thing you know
We’ll start hearing theories about how after we jettison Kelly Johnson for some trash player, we’ll be looking at “former all-star” Jose Vidro to fill the void at 2B.
Eventually, the theoretical lineups will look like this:
RF Dye
2B Vidro (for the GIDP)
3B Chipper Jones
CF Andruw Jones
LF Ibañez
C McCann
SS Greene
1B Thorman
Pitcher

...having night mares about "Turbo"
…Turbo = Vidro that’s the nick name he picked up with the M’s blogosphere so I can’t take credit on that one. But it fits…ugh…we field that line up – and I’ll become a Royals or Orioles fan.

Mags would be nice, though I would still prefer Brian Giles. Why does Milton Bradley never get mentioned? We need better OBP.

Would make a great addition to the disabled list.

Actually, he has hit 30 home runs before, and he's overall an above average hitter.
However, he’s so bad in the field that he actually gives ALL of the runs back. Defensive metrics have him rated as -15 < -20 < -25 as an outfielder, and he’s consistently been worth +18 runs with the bat as a Mariner. Even at DH (positional adjustment being -2 wins), that’s a below average player.
