Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Gregory Alan Maddux

I saw this several weeks ago over at Rain Delay and thought I'd pilfer it and re-post (click picture for larger version):

This is a perfect example of a pitcher who didn't show dominance early on. The most impressive and prescient note here is when the scout writes, "doesn't give in to the opposition, [...] he attacks the hitters on every pitch."

“lacks overall control on all pitches”

At the time Maddux was a thrower sitting at 92-93. He discovered that throwing with as much velocity as he could caused him to lose movement. He dialed back his delivery and started concentrating on control and movement.

I have seen a video of him as a high schooler throwing for scouts and he was throwing harder than I ever saw him throw in the major leagues and he had a longer stride and more powerful torque from his midsection. His finish also kept him from getting in a decent fielding position.

What a great post

Is this kid still out there?? Something tells me he could be a good one! :-)

Wow

A ‘5’ rating in poise and baseball instinct. This was four years before his break-out season, but man! Wonder if this was before he introduced that cutter? Interesting find.
