Eric O'Flaherty
The first big move of the offseason:
"According to Larry LaRue of The Tacoma News Tribune, the Braves claimed southpaw reliever Eric O'Flaherty off waivers from the Mariners today. O'Flaherty, 24 in February, was terrible in seven appearances with the Ms this year and struggled with walks and hits allowed in Triple A. In 2007, though, he held lefties to a .183/.278/.204 line.
I sure hope we use him as a LOOGY, and this isn't an Ohman replacement. Here are his numbers (if the formatting holds). Not pretty, I sepecially don't like the walks.
From scout.com:
"O’Flaherty has a fastball in the mid-90s, a tough slider and is developing a change.

If he wasn’t good enough to be a Mariner, why the hell did we claim him?

Norton wasn’t good enough to be a Mariner either

Good point
I won’t hate him until I see what he can do in a game for us.

As far as free talent goes, O’Flaherty is pretty solid. He could certainly settle into the pen as a cheap LOOGY. I hope this precludes us from giving a guaranteed mutli-million contract to Will Ohman.

his 07 nbrs are very encouraging and we could just chalk up his problems with the fact that he had a bad year, it seems like a good risk to take

Look At The Splits.
His overall numbers are meaningless. Despite some struggles in the majors, he’s held lefties to a .231/.309/.308 line in 130 AB. He’s only 24, dirt cheap and has some upside as a LOOGY. This is free talent and I like the move. If you look at Will Ohman’s 2006-2007 overall stats, you would have never understodd why we got him in a trade.

Better LOOGY split than Royce Ring. Gees I hope he never has to pitch to righties though. Like a .900 OPS split vs them.

I'll drink to that...
and you can never have enough LH relief — also a pretty reasonable priced option.

could be useful or he could be resop 2.0. but a young, live armed lefty for free? sure why not. he cant be any worse than ridgway who we gave up aybar and fontaine for. have we punted on 2009 yet or are we waiting to try to top the crazy dollars being given to average and slightly above average pitchers?

yeah, that was a trainwreck
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

In Wren’s defense, I wouldn’t want anybody with his problems on my team either.

I have to agree with this – the Braves gave him more than enough chances to clean his act up, and he gave no indication that he was ever going to get better. From injury, to drugs, to booze, to insubordination, etc. It turned into one of those situations, where a change of scenery was the only thing that could help him.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

And Ridgway was very dominant for Durham in 2007. He threw in the high 90s and had great control. He never looked like the same pitcher with the Braves, his velocity was down and his control escaped him.

Looks like a good pick up
The Mariners have a much larger problem than one middle relief guy. Not to mention, they SUCK at developing pitchers not named Randy Johnson.
