Cubs Re-sign Ryan Dempster

The Chicago Cubs and Ryan Dempster are believed to have come to agreement on a new contract. The new deal is believed to be 4 years and 52 million. Dempster had a Career year in 08 and the cubs are he can repeat it. Dempster does come with an injury risk having already undergone Tommy John surgery once in his career. The Braves can now take Dempster off thier wishlist and now must move on to another one of the top Free Agent starters most notably AJ Burnette and Derek Lowe.

Things are getting tighter.

Not really, at least in my opinion

While I would have been happy to land Dempster, everyone knew (or at least should have had an idea) his “want to test the market” and his “interested in the Braves” statements were really nothing more than strategy. He was pretty much destined to go back to the Cubs, it was just a matter of whether they would go to 4 years or if he’d have to settle for 3.

Well...

A little tighter, every time someone gets signed while we have holes I get worried.

This was little less than I thought he would get but he really wanted to stay in Chicago so he may have taken less. This could be a good high risk high reward type deal for them. He could be just as good as he was last year or he could go back to his old ways. This deal isn’t a trend setter but its a solid deal for both parties. I still think Dempster could have gotten $15 mil. per if he had signed with another team.

Is Maddux a FA?

We should sign him, Glavine, Pedro, Clemens, and Randy Johnson. That would be a legendary rotation. Sign Bonds too.

this is 2009, not 1999

Thank You Chicago Cubs. Enjoy Dempster’s reverting to the mean. He may be decent in the future but this past year’s level of success isnt sustainable

Ditto here...

he certainly would not have been on my radar if I were FW. But, this is the season where lies can get you lots more money; it’s all a big game for the agents to get a bigger cut. Dempster never had any interest in Atlanta and I’m not really convinced FW had too much interest in him. My guess is that FW is still playing the Peavy game and if that fails, he will look to trades rather than FAs.

MLBTR

MLB trade rumors is reporting an interview with Boras as saying the he wants Barry Zito type years and money for Derek Lowe which is 18 mill a year and 7 years. Does this guy have a chemical imbalance or something.

Well, he’s also trying to get Jason Varitek the same type of money that Posda received…so, yes?

I guess I should be one to talk.

I respect what he's trying to do, BUT...

…his hypberbole is a bit insulting and condescending. You can play hardball without talking out of your ass. (Do I have some sort of anal fixation…?)

This actually looks like a good deal for the Cubs...

in fact, it’s almost identical to the Carlos Silva deal with Seattle last year. Not bad work on the part of Cubs management.

Halladay

I just heard he’s available on mlbtr. Would LOVE to get him, even more than Peavy.

Pretty sure his contract is up at the end of next year.

2 years at 30 million, I don’t know what Toronto would be looking for in a trade. He threw 246 innings last year and posted a 1.053 WHIP.

Theoretically speaking...

Halladay is a guy I would love to have. He’s probably been the best pitcher in baseball over the last three seasons and he is very efficient with his pitches. But I don’t think the Jays ever consider dealing him.

Graziano is the only person I’ve heard bring him up so far. The Jays do need to do some serious rebuilding.

If the Jays really do move him...

they’ll ask for a King’s ransom. Doesn’t really make sense for us in my opinion, especially if Halladay doesn’t want to be on a team in rebuilding mode.
