He signs a four-year deal worth at least $52 million, that's $13 mil per year.

Nice.

This should take the Cubs out of the Peavy derby (Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly and Marquis getting the money and Marshall probably deserving a spot). I would have offered 3/$45M max and he still would have taken the longer contract to stay where he’s comfortable. Tough break, but we had to believe this was the most likely outcome. With Burnett reportedly getting a 5/$80M offer from the Yanks, we should turn our attention to getting two of Peavy (Flowers, Gorkys, Morton/Reyes and Boyer/Locke maybe), Sheets (2/$30M) and Lowe (3/$45M).

I was waiting on this

I knew those reports of Dempsters interest in the Braves was bogus. Clearly nothing more than a ploy to get the Cubbies to go to 4 years.

What's going to happen in the long run?

Dempster to Cubs.
Let’s say Sabathia and Burnett sign with the Yankees, the Red Sox sign Lowe, offer more money and lure Tazawa to them, and Sheets re-signs with the Brewers. But basically rendering the field of FA pitchers that the Braves might’ve wanted all unavailable.

Surely, Kevin Towers now feels that he has the leverage in the Peavy-to-Braves trade talks, and might actually begin asking for more.

But, Frank Wren feels himself in an advantageous position because Peavy can’t quite go to the other potential suitors because they’ve filled their rotations. Also the fact that the Padres will still be somewhat preferable to eliminate Peavy’s contract.

We need starting pitching. They need to cut payroll.

Who has the advantage?

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Good point

and honestly i’m not sure your question CAN be answered. Obviously it all depends on how the pieces fall and whether or not “another” team becomes involved. Theory wise I say it would be hard for Wren to lose leverage unless the Yankees, or another high payroll team, become involved.

My concern isn’t with the Yankees signing Sabathia, it’s with them NOT signing Sabathia. Theoretically that could turn their focus to Peavy and bring them into “serious” (or at least more serious) trade talks. If the speculation is true and Wren is still interested in Peavy, this would probably end our involvement.

Disagree.

I’m with you on the Yanks action, but I think the Red Sox are at either/or with Lowe and Tawaza; they could well end up with either and no problem. The Brew Crew could go over the top on Sheets, but we should hold to our guns and keep our max offer at 3/$45M. If we strike out in free agency, don’t over pay for Peavy because we’d need more than that to compete and the Garland’s of the world won’t cut it.

Dodged a bullet here.

Take Ryan Dempster off the board

Gladly.

Looks like our $50 million in available money doesn’t go as far as it used to. Just sub-in Flowers for Gorkys and be done with the Peavy thing.

by TradeAndruw on Nov 18, 2008 5:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t do that, personally. Flowers is rapidly approaching untouchable status in my mind.

He’s blocked at 1st and Catcher.

by TradeAndruw on Nov 18, 2008 6:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Catcher yes, as for 1B…we’ll see how Kotchman does. Flowers was just in Myrtle after all and wouldn’t likely come up until 2010. At that point, I think Kotchman will have just one year left?

Anyway, I still wouldn’t add him to an already strong offer. If Flowers continues with his progress, he could become one of the elite prospects and we could trade him then when his value is even higher. Just my opinion.

There’s no way in hell that Kotchman is blocking anyone. The question would be…if Flowers was to be moved to 1B, where does that put him in relation to Freeman? I would have to imagine that Freddie is the better defender of the two.

Thoughts anyone?

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Freeman is by all accounts above-average. I can’t imagine Flowers being better than average. Flowers has certainly proved more this season, but Freeman has equal power, probably the better bat, and is four years younger.

I’d take Flowers obviously. You don’t have to stretch your imagination very far to see him in the big leagues to stay in 2010. Can’t say that about Freeman at all.

gooood

I never thought Dempster was anything special, i mean corky miller hit a homerun off him. I really dont think signing Ben Sheets is really a bad idea.. we wouldnt have to offer him a long contract, he might be cheaper then some of the other free agents.. it might make sense.

What About..

Just thought of this and just gonna throw it out there. Since the Braves and the Padres are having trouble deciding on a 4th or the final guy would they be interested in a reliver? My thought would be to sign Kerry Wood and trade Rafeal Soriano. With them not having Hoffman back he could become there closer. I personally don’t like Soriano b/c he can be wild and gets rattled. Also his mysterious arm problems. So we would have Wood in the 9th and Gonzalez in the 8th. You guys probably think where will Smoltz pitch? Well this is a great problem to have when hopefully he comes back but you have to build your team now on based on what you have now. All three of them can close and the way the starters pitched and how deep they went into the games last year we will need a strong bullpen.

Also i like Lowe maybe on a 2 yr deal no more. Gotta ink Tawaza and if Escobar leaves Furcal’s got to be the replacement. Resign Hampton to a year to year deal. Then move onto the OF.

I think Soriano makes something like 6 mil this year so I doubt the Pads would be interested in that.
