The Braves' deal for Jake Peavy is not dead. Sending Jose Ceda to Florida lessened the Cubs' chances. The Yankees are not in the running at all. Frank Wren still believes the Braves will get this trade done.
From Peter Gammons at ESPN
With the money that I'm hearing being tossed about, I wonder if we will be able to sign ANY free agent pitchers. Peavy might be our only option.

Lets hope this turns into another Johan Santana trade, and the price just keeps coming down…

Here's hoping!
Gotta agree gopherbroke….it seems now the Braves are the last team with any real interest, and unlike the Johan trade, the Yankees aren’t even in on it.

Cubs Sign Dempster.
I think Chicago will be out of it and the Yankees look to be the favorites in both the Sabathia and Burnett sweepstakes, so the field for Peavy continues to thin. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Towers made a mistake by not jumping on the rumored offer from Atlanta for Peavy before free agency began.

The longer this goes
The longer the Padres hold on to him, and the closer the season gets, the better off we’re going to be. We could conceivably get Escobar to stay out of the deal if we play their bluff correctly.

Burnett is supposedly going to be offered a 5 year deal worth 80 mill by the Yanks. I don’t see the Braves beating this offer. Dempster’s gone, Lowe’s probably gone soon…we need to get Peavy.

No, We Don't.
We need to get two frontline starters and a sluggin LF. If we strike out in free agency, we might as well stand pat and purely rebuild for the future.

Peavy would be our ace for 4 or 5 years. That IS the future. It’s not like pitchers of Peavy’s caliber are readily available every offseason. This deal would potentially set up the front of our rotaion (with Jurrjens, hopefully Hanson, etc.) for 2010 and years after. This is NOT purely a win-now move. Not by any means.

Really?
If I remember correctly there has been an “ace” on the market every year for at least the last 3/4 years. Either by free agency or trade.

Santana and Haren last season
I think those guys are comparable to Peavy and Sabathia.

Haren is a good example, but Santana was only going to be a one-year rental. I don’t think it’s very often you have the opportunity to get an ace pitcher under contract for several years at a decent price.

The Mets had to give up prospects and then sign Santana to a huge deal. Different from Peavy. He’s already signed to a “bargain” deal.

Yeh, but how often is it that the Braves are the CLEAR frontrunner to get the ace? Relative to those other scenarios, the Braves have virtually no competition for Peavy. Really, our biggest competition is Kevin Tower’s apparent lack of competence. It’s seemingly rare that an ace is available without one—if not both—of the NY teams and Boston going strong after him.

Great plan.
I love paying my hard earned money to watch a team with financial resources to compete get their ass kicked. The only way i would accept the Braves not spending this money and focus on rebuilding is if they used it to lower ticket prices. Rebuilding is for teams with $50 million payrolls, not $95 million payrolls.

eh
Even if it’s not Peavy, I still think we need to trade for an ace. Peavy, Cain, I don’t care…but it doesn’t look like we’re going to get a #1 in FA. We can still add a guy like Garland, but he’s probably a 3. I personally don’t think Wren would throw away this season already.

Its gonna get done guys
I am afraid we are gonna end up taking Kalil Greene back as part of the deal. It is gonna look like this when it gets done.
Padres Receive: Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton, Jeff Locke, and Blaine Boyer
Braves Receive: Jake Peavy, Kalil Greene.
So basically the deal ends up being Locke for Greene and we don’t have to go add a SS in FA.

Incredibly, SD was getting offers for Greene. They aren’t desperate to move him, and we could just turn around and trade him.

Personally, if we’re throwing in Jeff Locke we should replace Morton with Jo-Jo Reyes. I think Morton’s a much better pitcher.

JoJo and Morton are both headcases with good stuff
Whoever’s ends up being better will be the one to get his head on straight first. Morton’s older with less ML experience, but JoJo has had more ML time, so who knows who will figure it out first.
