How do you feel about Braves TV announcers?
There's Chip Carey, Joe Simpson, and John Sciambi and all TBS hate aside, I think when Sciambi and Simpson take the mic, they do an excellent job. Joe Simpson is a fine straight man, and Sciambi is pretty good at making me laugh. I find myself laughing at the ridiculous things they get away with, and often find myself saying wait isn't there a baseball game going on? (This is really helpful when the Braves have a 90 loss season.) Of course they are no match for Skip and Pete, but who is? You know you will never think any announcer ever will be, so give these guys a chance.
Anecdote time. Did anyone watch the game where J&B (Joe & Boog) were showing off the Suntrust seats and they got the feeds to those TV's changed, so the viewers could see them waving? It doesn't really sound that funny, but at the time it was hilarious. So yeah, feelings, concerns? This may have come up a lot before, but I am new here.

Great topic!
I, myself, don’t understand all the Chip Carey hate – I personally really like the guy’s style and delivery.
For me, Joe is the last holdover to a bygone era that was absolutely perfect – Skip, Pete, Joe, and Don. Those 4 were, to me, the best, and I’ll always miss that team. Having Joe links the past to the present, so I really like Joe.
As for Sciambi, I was really not impressed with him when he first got to Atlanta, and I didn’t want to even give him a chance. But now I feel completely different – I love the guy! He and Joe make a great team. I keep seeing that cartton dude they compare him to from the Incredibles, and I laugh every time. So I guess I’d have to say I like all the announcers at this point. Nothing will ever replace Skip and Pete, though. I’ll miss them both this season.

Thanks for the comment.
I thought I’d change it up a bit. A little too much rosterbation. Yeah I took a tour of Turner Field this weekend, and we got to go up in the press box, and they had boxes for all the announcers, and Pete still had one with his name on it, and there was one lone piece of mail. (The picture is now my avatar.) I nearly cried. I tried to take the picture so you couldn’t tell who the mail was from, I don’t want to be nosy or anything.

To answer the Chip-hate...
“That’s what’s great about the post-season. This is one of the greatest pitching match-ups, EVER!”
Fausto Carmona vs. Andy Pettitte.
Chip exacerbates a lot, sounds very generic, and goes crazy whenever the other team does something. He doesn’t have a lot of personality, and hasn’t really shown a firm grasp of knowledge of the game. To me, you have better chances of taking a baseball guy and turning them into a personality, but not so much by taking a good voice, and turning them into a baseball guy.
Tony Gwynn’s voice is hard for me to take seriously, but his perspectives of watching baseball are more insightful, and I find myself appreciating his words more than the sound of his voice. I like guys like Orel Hershiser, and to some extent, Buck Martinez. They bring some knowledge and insider-perspectives to the table.
I like Joe and Boog. I hope Boog doesn’t go to the west coast. They have great chemistry together, and Joe’s the brains, and Boog, I’m not calling dumb, but brings more personality to the table. Nothing is more entertaining than listening to Boog making a reference, and Joe try his hardest, mostly by remaining silent, to not laugh, before breaking out in to a Beavis & Butthead-like giggle fest on live-air.
Skip & Pete were family to Braves fans. They’ll never be replaced, and should never be attempted to do so. Nothing sucks more than “the NEXT” something. Better to be the best first at something, instead.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I'm agreeing with everyone today.
I don’t really like Chip, mostly because he symbolizes TBS and the Braves’ split. How did you guys think Smoltz did?
by someguy917 on Nov 18, 2008 12:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Smoltz isn't bad
He’s had plenty of experience with the mic, having done radio spots since like 1993, with Haim Habib.
He’s got a good voice, and the ability to loosen up and drop some subtle jokes from time to time, and of course, a vast wealth of knowledge one can only have from years of experience. I already get the impression from all his post-game reports, in-game commentary cameos, and the TBS gig in the post-season, that’s he’s got a post-career career in mind already.
To put it in perspective, Smoltz’s commentating was complimented by Phillies fans on a different blog; they didn’t care much for his bias about Citizens Bank Park, but they liked his mic work, overall.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Love Smoltz
I think it’d be great to have him as a full-time guy when his career is done. That is if he doesn’t want to be the pitching coach……(apologies to McDowell, who I think is doing a good job….I just love Smoltz!)

My complaint about Chip....
is how he laughs as he talks. And it’s usually when he’s talking about something he’s exaggerating about or something – not even a joke. That drives me nuts. otherwise, I like him. Sue me!

chip caray is absolutely abysmal, and i hope he takes a full-time gig with TBS to allow joe & boog do all the TV games, because they are excellent together.
i don’t listen to the radio, but i can only assume it’ll be lemke and like, gant next year. when gant started 5 years ago on TBS, i was very impressed, i can only assume he’s gotten better.
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

I refuse to take the Braves TV announcers seriously until they broadcast absolutely smashed like Rick Sutcliffe.
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

I love Joe and Boog! I always get upset when the World Series rolls around cause I have to put up with Joe Buck and his baseball hating ass.
Wouldn’t mind having Lemer do a couple of Braves TV broadcasts though, I love listening to him do pre-game stuff as I’m driving into ATL from Birmingham.

Yeah, I’ve gotten used to Lemke. He’s not bad.

I am generally surprised.
For some reason I was under the impression that people found Joe too boring, and Boog too strange or something, but I am surprised that most people think like me that they are at the very worst an above average baseball duo.

I actually grew to enjoy them quite a bit last season. I cracked up every time they put up this pic:

Didn’t they get a bobblehead of this or something?

Chip Caray has the voice and is good at delivery. I’ll give him that… it’s not an easy thing to do.
But, people can’t stand how overzealous and simple-minded he can about the game. Take for instance, Jason Varitek’s “majestic” foul ball in the ALCS. Or that routine fly out to deep left-field that he makes sound as if it’s heading for Mars. People don’t like an enlarged sense of enthusiasm and self-awareness coming through their TVs. They just want the facts, no dumbass jokes, some good commentary, and a likeable personality. I’m sure Chip would be a nice guy to have a beer with, but he just comes off as the annoying kid in 7th grade who always wanted to pal around with the cool guys.
I’ve got no problems with Sciambi or Simpson, except that Simpson can be a bit repetive and takes the soapbox from time to time about assumptions of the way to play that game that have no statistical basis
No one will ever top Pete van Wieren and Skip Caray. Never again will baseball have a tandem as professional and legendary as Skip and Pete. God bless ’em.

I agree
Although I also really liked Ernie Johnson (showing my age here…)

Nitpicking
But one thing that bugs me about Joe is his frequent use of “uh-huh” when agreeing. It’s not “uh-huh and blah, blah blah” which would be OK, but just a big ol’ “uh-huh” and then silence. Annoying.

I’ll have to listen for this, you better not have ruined watching to the Braves for me :)

To be fair
Skip would get excited about deep pop flys to second base. Ok, maybe i am exaggerating, but Skip would get excited about routine fly balls.

Chip Carey, Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver
These are the three worst anouncers I have ever heard. Joe contradicts himself 3,000 times a season and compares everything to the Big Red Machine.
Tim McCarver can’t even get the fundementals of baseball right and is freakin’ repettitive.
Chip Carey tries to invoke the spirit of his Grandfather every telecast and is totally annoying. He might be good when he hits 70 and becomes completely senile like ol’ Harry, but he has about 30 years to go.
by JFP on Nov 18, 2008 8:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
But...
not necessarily in that order. McCarver is terrible, followed with his nose up his butt by Morgan, and Chip is the better of the three, but by no means anything better than “OK”. I personally preferred Don Sutton over anything we have now, whether considered an “announcer” or a “color commentator”. He at least knows baseball; I’m not sure McCarver ever really played the game the way he describes it.
by BBFAN46 on Nov 19, 2008 7:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Now that I agree with – Don is number 3 behind Skip and Pete in my book…..
by secondbass on Nov 19, 2008 12:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think...
that I would like to be able to hear them more often. I can hardly ever catch a Braves game nowdays…
In general, I think that almost all baseball analysts in TV, radio, and the mainstream print world are subpar. We certainly can learn something from guys who played the game at the highest level, but their general hostility to the growing body of knowledge about what actually leads to success is inexcusable.

Love Joe and Boog. Great chemistry between them and Boog does an excellent job of setting Joe up for his analysis. A lot of play by play guys aren’t very good at that but Boog is. Pete was one of the great old school radio announcers which are few and far between now. He’ll he hard to replace. A real pro.
