These "Sources" Just Won't Stop

Here's an inclination of what the Braves might do in a post-Escobar world:

If the Braves acquire Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, one of their next steps will be to pursue free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, major-league sources say.

I mentioned this last week as a possible alternative if Esco is traded, and now "sources" have backed up that initial inclination. You really have to love these sources. Apparently the sources that told us this morning that talks were nearing completion have this afternoon told Ken Rosenthal that talks remain at an impasse:

The talks between the Braves and Padres remained at an impasse Thursday, the last day before teams are permitted to negotiate with free agents from other clubs.

Furcal ain't gonna be cheap, and the earlier reports had a lot of teams in on him. I thought we were going to spend our money on pitching and power hitting, but it seems like we might end up spending more money acquiring Peavy, replacing Escobar, and still needing more pitching and power hitting. Head-scratcher.

Kevin Towers had this to say to Yahoo's Tim Brown:

“Nothing is close,” he said. “I wouldn’t say we are even remotely close to pulling the trigger on anything with Jake.”

There are too many twists in this Peavy thing.

Alright

To hell with Peavy lets just keep what we have and make a trade for LF and sign A.J./Sheets and Lowe/Garland. I know these are worse pitchers but I am not wanting the damn Padres holding up the FA period. He is not worth it and lets focus on the gameplan as we had laid out before.

Whatever

The thing is Peavy is SUPPOSE to be cheap this year but yet when we go after Furcal also that will be CLOSE to $20 million. Why not go after another good pitcher if we will spend that money AND keep Escobar. In my opinion Escobar and a good pitcher that would cost close to $20 million would be just as good as Peavy and Furcal especially since Furcal will want a 3 year deal more than likely and then when Peavy’s salary starts goin up in 2010 then it will be MORE than $20 million for Peavy and Furcal. And Furcal is already losing a step he will lose that much more in the future. I like Peavy also but trading Escobar and replacin him with an expensive veteran is not the thing to do because most people say Peavys contract is cheap this year. True but not when have to get an expensive SS along with Peavy. We should just go into free agency and get our players SINCE we have the cash.

Glad someone is understanding just how costly it is to replace Escobar’s talent.

Good point

Why not go after CC if we’re throwing 30mil at Peavy/Furcal? That still doesn’t address another starter and power outfielder.

by TradeAndruw on Nov 13, 2008 6:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What the hell's the point?

If Peavy + Furcal will cost ~ $25mil per year, why not offer that to CC and keep Escobar and prospects? If FW makes this trade AND signs a high-priced SS, he’ll lose a lot of my respect.

+1

I would much rather chase CC for the money than spend it on a SS. Hell, I’d rather Lilli play SS than pay for Furcal. We could spend that money much more wisely.

I agree

Furcal, if healthy, is an impact player. I just don’t trust players with back injuries – too much can go wrong, especially when the biggest part of his game is speed. You got no run if you got no back.

I do not think

we can compete with the Yanks for CC. I wish we could. But I don’t see it happening. Just my humble opinion.

Furcal

I think Furcal was just a name floated out there for Peavey’s sake so he wouldn’t turn down this deal once it goes through.

I have a feeling

that if the trade doesn’t get made before free agency starts that this trade could get put on the back burner. I really don’t think it will hold up free agency and if in the first week the Braves are able to sign two starting pitchers the Padres might be screwed on making this trade. There’s a thin line between waiting for the best deal to come up and waiting to long and Towers is getting very close to crossing it.

whatever happened to

peavy refusing to be traded for escobar? was he just blowing smoke up our asses?

I for one hope that Wren sticks to his guns or even pulls some pieces off the table. I would still like to have Peavey, but I don’t want the Braves to be gouged to make it happen. The deal now is already too much when you take in Peavey’s contract.

1. We would have no shot with CC. He’ll either take the most money which will be the Yankees or he’ll stay at home somewhere in California. No one else need offer.

2. Can not see us spending 15 mil a year on Furcal. I think someone’s sources are out to lunch on this one.

yep

sorry, didn’t see this before I posted above.

Consider...

I think one of the things that everyone is missing is that this trade is the closest we can get to a “sure thing.” I know that sounds insane but just think. We are still the frontrunners on this deal. We have the pieces to pull it off, whether or not it’s too much is debateable. But if we do just give up and let this deal go, we’re taking a pretty big risk in relying on the free agent market. So many teams are desperate for pitching that none of the free agents are gonna come cheap. So you just have to ask yourself: Would you rather be the leader in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes where you will be giving up a couple of good players and prospects or do you wanna enter a bidding war with at least 6-7 other teams on these free agent pitchers?

(I honestly don’t know what we should do at this point but I’m scared we’ll rely on the free agents and come away with basically nothing)

No thank you, Mr. Garland

I’d rather have a rotation of JJ, Campillo, Hampton, JoJo, and Morton than see the Braves spend outrageous sums of money on Garland. He’s only had one good season in his career.

Towers speaks

The first real “meaty” quote, but what does it mean (link below)? Towers says he doesn’t see a deal with “either club” referring to the Braves and Cubs. So does he mean it, or is it more games? Either way I’ve never seen a major league GM make a quote like this and then turn around and make a deal with one of the teams mentioned, at least not right away which is what the Braves want. I think it’s a huge mistake on his part. Yes, the Yankees could make a decent offer but with Cashman at the helm and Jakes asking price for going to the AL I just don’t see it. The Pads will now have to settle for a 2nd rate offer in my opinion. Serves them right in my book.

Also, I loved some of the comments from Pads fans below the article, they think they’re gonna land the holy grail for Peavy. What they’re missing is that the Pads HAVE to trade Peavy to dump his salary. That alone deflates his value. They’re gonna be sorely let down when the trade does go down.

No Deal?

Shortstop Question

Mark Bowman had this to say regarding Lillibridge:

“If the Braves need to find a shortstop, they are confident they can find one outside their organization. They don’t seem too interested in providing an opportunity for Brent Lillibridge, who disappointed at Triple-A Richmond this year and then upset management by choosing not to play in any winter leagues.”

Very interesting…..

It's escalating

The day the majority finally breaks and chooses “Screw Peavy, let’s keep Yunel and go after a FA pitcher” is the day that the Jake Peavy trade will finally happen.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

so what ur saying is either way we set up to be dissapointed…

right now we want peavy, so we cant have him=dissapointment nbr1

later we wont want peavy, so the padres willcomplete the trade =dissapointment nbr 2
