Could Cubs come on Strong in the end for Peavy
The latest rumor / whisper / scuttlebutt from Yahoo's Tim Brown:
While there was “some movement” in negotiations with the Atlanta Braves and a “much better than reported” offer from the Chicago Cubs, a source with knowledge of the Jake Peavy trade talks said Thursday morning that the San Diego Padres have not agreed to players in either proposal.
And ESPN is reporting that the Cubs just make another trade:
The Chicago Cubs have acquired Florida Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The Marlins received 22-year-old right-hander Jose Ceda in return, according to sources.
Could this be a precursor to a Peavy deal for them? Perhaps a necessary piece so they can trade away another bullpen arm, or is this just insurance in case Kerry Wood departs. Amid the rumored Peavy trade, this is an interesting development.

Also, it’s possible they could flip Gregg to San Diego since Hoffman probably won’t be back.

I just don't see that
If i’m right, Gregg is only signed for one more year. Ceda, who the Cubs traded, is younger (controllable) and has much more upside. If anything I think the Pads would have wanted Ceda more.
Plus the Pads are packing it in for 09, why would they want an expensive free agent reliever? I’m pretty sure the Cubs picked up Gregg for depth in their bullpen.

You may be right
I was just throwing it out there as possible. However, Gregg isn’t too awful expensive (2.5m last year and bound for an arbitration raise this offseason, according to Cot’s), and maybe Towers has an eye on getting Gregg and dealing him at next year’s deadline.
Or, maybe before this offseason to a contender who misses out on K-Rod/Fuentes. Yeah, it’s a stretch I know. But it’s fun to think about.

Clarification
Last line should read: “Or, maybe before – this offseason…”

Okay
Now Hendry is saying that they are not going to re-sign Wood. So my speculation was for naught. Still, it was fun.

Cubs fans are ruining the mlbtr discussion on Peavy. I’m tired of hearing “Pie + Theriot + Cedeno should get it done”.
I still say they can’t get it done without Vitters, unless they’re willing to move Marmol or Samardzija, which doesn’t make much sense for them.

I hear ya we need to get more braves fans over there because cubs fans think they own the site. I’m so sick of hearing about the cubs they think there the best team in baseball and they haven’t won a world series in 100 years.

I’m sure Peavy would much rather go to the Cubs, where he’ll have a chance to win immediately, whereas he’d probably have to wait a few years for the Braves to be contenders. Not to mention the fact that the NL Central is much easier for the Cubs to win than the NL East is for the Braves.

God I really hope the Cubs end up getting Peavy just so the Braves don’t fool themselves into thinking trading a good young shortstop that you have under team control for 5 years is a good idea.

I got to see Ceda this summer with West Tennessee. I like him a lot; he’s huge, his hands are as big as anybody’s I’ve seen, and he just throws easy. He was throwing with another pitcher and the ball was exploding out of his hand. Then he got into the game and it was even more impressive. It seems funny to say, but I think the Marlins got more talent out of Kevin Gregg than they got for Mike Jacobs, Josh Willingham, and Scott Olsen. (Not collectively, but individual talent.)

gregg is a replacement for wood, not someone like marmol. hendry said in an interview today that they will not be making an offer to wood.
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

new from Ken Rosenthal
ATL would look to sign Furcal if Escobar is traded. Guess that answers that question. Kinda pricey for a leadoff hitter with declining defense, but infinitely better than Lillibridge.

Trade
This is like hanging by one’s thumbs. I think if there is no trade by morning, there will be no trade. The Cubs are offering spare parts; they’re not serious (unless SD is stupid enough to take the offer) and the Braves would be stupid to get jerked around. I imagine they have their own reasons for including Escobar and the other parts are very useful prospects. Pie has never hit at all, and unless Vitters is in the trade, they’d have to cough up their top pitching prospects, which they don’t want to do. Ceda is already gone, and they only have a couple of true pitching prospects.

+1
I hope Wren does yank our offer tomorrow. What will Towers do when he’s left with nothing BUT the Cubs offer. This could become “the” worst trade in the history of the Padres.
Unfortunately you and I both know that won’t happen. It would be fun though!
