Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

MLB Awards.

Since our boys are no longer playing games but others are, I think it's a fine time to debate more general topics in MLB.  This season, a pair of transports made huge impacts in the NL and have forced their way into the Senior Curcuit's awards discussion.  Meanwhile, the AL has a record-breaking closer to consider for all their hardware, indicative of their wide open races.  If I had a ballot, this is what it would look like:

  • AL Cy Young - Roy Halladay, SP, Toronto Blue Jays (Cliff Lee 2nd and Jon Lester 3rd)
  • AL MVP - Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston Red Sox (Grady Sizemore 2nd and Alex Rodriguez 3rd)
  • AL ROY - Evan Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays (Mike Aviles 2nd and Joba Chamberlain 3rd)
  • NL Cy Young - Tim Lincecum, SP, San Francisco Giants (Johan Santana 2nd and Dan Haren 3rd)
  • NL MVP - Albert Pujols, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals (Chipper Jones 2nd and Hanley Ramirez 3rd)
  • NL ROY - Geovany Soto, C, Chicago Cubs (Jair Jurrjens 2nd and Joey Votto 3rd)

A few things jump out at me after doing this, such as the dominance of the AL East (all three award winners and 6/9 of those receiving votes), the success of former AL pitchers (Santana, Haren and Jurrjens) in the NL and the derth of OF (only Sizemore made it) on these lists.  The only race that was a runaway in my book was the NL MVP.  For the others, deference was given to those players on playoff bound teams (Pedroia, Longoria and Soto somewhat) and, in the event that there were none of those, I went with the more dominant performance as I will explain now.  Halladay's complete games and Lincecum's strikeout rates gave them the edge in my book.  I expect the media will overturn those two judgements when the real announcements are made, but I think the other four are downright probable.

Well guys, I look forward to your thoughts about my picks and your own counter-ballots in the comments below.  As the offseason progresses, I'll be sure to post my thoughts on our Braves and the rumors/ideas that arise.  Cheers and go Braves!

No love for Carlos Quentin? Nobody expected the White Sox to even make the playoffs and Quentin led the White Sox. He hit .288 average, 36 homers, 100 RBIs, .394 OBP, and .571 SLG. Very good numbers. I just think more people expected the Red Sox to make it than the White Sox. I would pick Quentin for my vote but if Pedroia wins it then he deserves it also.

I hate to say it but you took all the fun out of this one. If there is an argument with any of your picks I would think it’s Quentin over Pedroia. Personally I like Quentin every so slightly better only because I feel he had a greater impact on his team being where they are than Pedroia did for the Sawx.

I like what Lee did, but considering neither of the best pitchers in the AL made the playoffs I focused specifically on their numbers. Halladay hands down in my book (Wins are a BS statistic in my book).

does everyone else buy into the CC doesnt deserve the CY Young because he only pitched in 17 games or w/e

sub 2 era tho in those starts
led the NL in CG
tied for the NL lead in Shutouts
year’s total ERA was sub 2.70
finished the year with a 17-7 record (11-2 with the brewers)
only person i baseball with more Ks was lincecum
pitched 3 times in 9 days to put the brewers in the postseason (if u want to make a case for him being the MVP u start here)
avg about 7.5 innings per start

I think he should be the MVP over Pujols… only because lincecum was so outstanding its hard not to give him the CY young, but was pujols that much better than CC as far as importance to the team… w.o CC where do the brewers finish, maybe behind hte Reds… his replacement would have won around 5 of the 13 decisions he pitched in.

i think its ridiculous to say he shouldnt win just becuase he only pitched in 17 starts, Rick Sutcliffe had 20 starts in 1984 (in the NL) and he won the award, does that mean CC only needed to pitch 3 more times he would have won, well then i guess he needed one more week to get those 3 starts.

If his AL stats count as well

Then he probably deserves the Cy Young. 253 IP, 251 K, 59 BB, 10 CG, 2.70 ERA. Amazing!

If his AL starts don’t count, then there’s no way he should win it. Since the awards are a per league basis, then I guess voters don’t look at the AL stats. Half a season of CC isn’t worth a whole season of someone else.

Rick Sutcliffe stole the Cy Young from Dwight Gooden.

As for MVP, position players tend to provide more value then pitchers. You can break it into some type of wins or runs created stat, then position players are more valuable. Pujols’s bat and fielding > CC’s pitching and fielding.

but is it greater than CC’s pitchinig fielding and batting…

im kidding of course

Sabathia and Quentin.

On second thought, C.C. deserves to be 3rd in the NL Cy Young race. It’s amazing that he amassed so much value in such a short period of time, but he just didn’t do enough to catch up to year-long studs like Lincecum and Santana. His AL stats are meaningless for NL awards, which is unfortunate but fair. As for Pujols, he was the single most valuable player in baseball, period.

Carlos also deserves some love, but his lack of durability hurt him big time. I guess he too could snag a 3rd place vote (bumping A-Rod) just for the recognition.

Joe Mauer

Elite defensive catcher. OBP machine. The reason Morneau has 129 RBI.

And +1 for picking Roy Halladay. Great list.

Longoria or Aviles deserve the RotY, but I’m just going to throw his name out there cause he at least deserves an honorable mention: Brad Ziegler.

Quentin deserves some recognition, but he missed too much time, and the stupidity of his injury just makes him look worse. He’s also bad in the field. I favored him before he went down too.

Well, without Pujols the Cardinals win about 78-79 games while without Sabathia the Brewers win like 86 games. Sabathia put them over the hump with those ~4 wins he contributed, but then again take Ryan Braun away and they would’ve been even further out of the race. Pujols was hands down the best player in baseball this year, something like 2-3 wins better than the field. He’s the NL MVP.

I voted Pujols, Ramirez, Utley; Santana, Lincecum, Hamels; Soto, Votto, Jurrjens; Mauer, Pedroia, Halladay; Halladay, Lee, Lester; Longoria, Aviles, Joba.

even tho the races have no clear cut winner, i find it hard not to give CC an award

but i must admit Lincecum certainly deserves the Cy Young, and Pujols certainly deserves the MVP

Yeah I know what you mean. They basically rode CC to the playoffs at the end, but like 17843 said, they needed Braun just as much.

even though Quentin missed 27 more games than Pedroia shouldn’t it count for somethin that he still put up great numbers? Just like even though Pujols dominance and he stayed healthy this year and Chipper missed alot of games but if the Braves made the playoffs i would have voted for Chipper even though he missed alot of games. MVP is most valuable to the team. I realize without Pedroia the Red Sox might not even make the playoffs even though they were a HEAVY favorite to win the East or Wild Card at the beginning of the year. A fact is that without Quentin no way the White Sox makes the playoffs no way. And the White Sox were suppose to finish behind the Indians and Tigers (I actually thought the same thing). To me even though he missed 27 more games than Pedroia he is still the most valuable player because he still put up MONSTER numbers. But thats just my opinion, im fine with Pedroia winning it if he does win it because he deserves it also, maybe a Co MVP.

Since the Braves didn’t make the playoffs i would definately vote for Pujols but if the Braves would have made the playoffs and the Cardinals wouldn’t.

what happened for the mid-seaosn love for Carlos Quentin/Josh Hamilton? CQ got injured but Hamilton should win it he has 50 RBIs more than Pedroia while still hitting .300 and 32 homers.

by SayHeyWerd on Oct 4, 2008 7:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hamilton was sub-par in center field (-11 in /- and near the bottom in RZR) while Pedroia was very good at 2B (15 and 6th best at 2B). Their advanced hitting metrics aren’t very different either with Hamilton’s slight edge disappearing when you factor in hitting. Quentin was both not terribly good in the field (-10 and near the bottom in RZR) and missed way too much time).

I also don’t see the difference between Lincecum and Santana that says Lincecum certainly deserves the award. Santana had the slight innings edge, the ERA edge, and and the WHIP edge. Lincecum’s FIP was tons better of course.

cliff lee’s numbers are better than halladay’s across the board aside from IP, CG, & WHIP. . and lee was second in all 3. there is no way you can feasibly give the award to halladay under any circumstances

aside from that, you’re pretty much spot on. AL MVP is a tossup based on personal preference, my pick is probably pedroia by default cuz of all the black ink

Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

Pedroia is good but...

I can’t believe any GM wouldn’t pick Sizemore over him any day.
