John Smoltz and the Braves = Happy Together

Dave O'Brien at the Atlanta Journal Constitution did some digging on the Smoltz story that appeared yesterday in the NY Daily News, and came up with these quotes which he posted in his latest blog entry:

“I know nothing about [the Daily News story,” Smoltz said in a text message. “It’s news to me.” [...]

Smoltz has told Braves officials and others that his initial workouts this winter went very well, and his follow-up visits with surgeon James Andrews have produced nothing but positive reports.

But the pitcher stood by his previously stated plan of not offering any public pronouncements of his progress, and said he’s about to move into a period of relative isolation as he focuses on his comeback bid.

“Nothing has changed,” he said of his plans. “I am disappearing and doing my thing, whatever that is. There will be no no quotes from me on anything because there is nothing to report.”

Smoltz said repeatedly this year that he hopes to finish his career with the Braves, the only major league team he’s ever pitched for.

Wren said Saturday, “”John and I, the last time we talked, we agreed that when he got deeper in the winter we would talk [about a possible contract].”

Wren said last month that if Smoltz can pitch again and wants to pitch, the Braves want him back with the only major league team he’s ever played for.

Asked Saturday if that were still the case, Wren said, “That’s exactly right.”

Quite a more professional and to the point tone from O'Brien in this blog post. (...humm...)

On the Smoltz topic, it looks like this little flurry of recent excitement will be all that we get until much later this off-season. Count me in the camp that hopes John can come back and that he should be resigned by the Braves.

Meanwhile, Smoltz's buddy Tom Glavine gave an interview to the Sporting News; LT has the story here.

Still Looking...

for any statement from O’brien that Smoltz wasn’t in the Braves’ plans. The only people who made any such reference were the agent and the NYDN.

You attack his blog and then steal his content. Cool.

Keep looking

Or, go back and re-read the original post objectively and you’ll find Gondee didn’t attribute this quote to DOB. All he did was point out some valid concerns about DOB using his blog to add speculation to quotes from other sources. The problem arises when “others” start taking these “speculative” statements and running with them.

And for the record, the content you’ll find here is vastly superior to that which DOB posts. If you don’t like what you’ve found, take your newbie as back there!

okay...

“All he did was point out some valid concerns about DOB using his blog to add speculation to quotes from other sources.”

That’s why I read him, to get an insider’s view of the news. Sorry if that irritates some.

Then what are you doing here?

i read both, whats the big deal?

DOB does a good job of keeping people informed, giving clubhouse updates and sometimes entertaining inside stories from the clubhouse. I don’t participate over there as much as i used to, just because i don’t care for mind-numbing stat discussion, or reading novel length posts. But i do usually scroll through to see if O’Brien has added any new comment or news nugget. I do scroll past the music lyrics though.

I enjoy this site more for the in-game discussion. mainly for the no-post delay and unedited comments that make it enjoyable to see other people’s true reactions to a bad play, a good play, a win or a loss. Sharing pictures from games or being able to post a funny picture to express a comment. Thats what makes this site good in my opinion.

So with all that, i think its pointless to even bother with what seems to be a pissing contest of “this blog is better that that blog”. They’re 2 different types of blogs, so who the hell cares if we read em both? Is Talking Chop the Bloods and AJC the Crypts?

now i’m off my soapbox and contradicted myself by writing a novel.

Couldn’t agree more, but our new friend keeps bashing away at this blog, so some of the regulars are just defending the territory, you know?

And they’re the Crips, by the way. Didn’t you notice the lovely chartreuse bandanas?

Sorry, my gang vernacular never developed in rural Georgia. My wife’s from Atl, but we haven’t had the Bloods/Crips discussion. Maybe over dinner tonight.

As a newbie...

I joined to comment on another subject (Wren), but then got caught up in this AJC blog thing. I just don’t think it’s reasonable to suggest that agents (especially for 20-year veterans) are taking their cues from blogs, whether it’s this one or the AJC blog. And it’s somehow unseemly to so openly criticize the cross-town competition, IMO.

But, I really don’t mean to be a hater – that topic just struck a chord with me. I will absolutely drop it. Love the player/prospect profiles, etc, on this blog.

I wouldn’t go as far to say this site is superior to DOB’s blog. I also wouldn’t say his blog is superior to this sites content, as I believe they’re both great ways to keep up with the Braves. I know some don’t like DOB for some of the non baseball stuff in his blog and such, but I like reading it for contrasting views. Just my 2 cents…

Back remotely on the subject of Smoltz I really hope we bring him back as well. Smoltz has just been a great Brave from day one and has always been totally clutch, he just got shut down by injuries. I still thought until he got hurt that he was our #1 clutch playoff starter, and when he went down I really thought that hurt our playoff chances big time. I do hope they bring him back.
