General Manager Kevin Towers has said young pitching likely will be the starting point for any trade involving Peavy, and no fewer than three of his Padres scouts watched [Tommy] Hanson overmatch prospects from other organizations.
Hanson's fastball got up to 95 mph and often reached 92-93 mph in the outing. [...]
A non-Padres scout who saw Hanson recently had this to say about 6-foot-6, 210-pounder: "He has good stuff. Good curveball. He had command of the strike zone. Is he a No. 2 or No. 3 starter? Could be. His motion stays together pretty well. He is kind of a max-effort guy. It's not free and easy."
Padres like what they see in Braves pitching prospect Hanson

Today on ESPN Insider Keith Law made a great point about the proposed Peavy trades by comparing the recent hauls for CC Sabathia, Dan Haren, Johan Santana, and Rich Harden. He noted that each trade really only consisted of one top prospect, possibly two in the case of Haren, and a bunch of lesser prospects/fringe guys. And he pointed out that all of these guys were coming off of better seasons than Peavy. He doesn’t believe that the Padres will get anything like the supposed Peavy for Hanson, Schafer, and Johnson deal that has supposedly been discussed.

But Sabathia and Santana were coming into contract years. The teams acquiring those two weren’t guaranteed anything beyond this season, though the Mets extended Santana.
The Braves would have Peavy for a guaranteed four years. I’m not sure about Haren, and Harden didn’t command an amazing haul because of his propensity for injury.

Pretty much summed it up
Santana’s contract demand actually lowered his trade value.
Haren/Bedard are probably comparable, but they were well below market value for 2 years (Haren from his contract and Bedard from arb). Peavy is well below market value in the first year, but the extension isn’t that much of a discount. So more years, but more expensive. I thought he’d be as valuable as them on the trade market, but I’m not sure. If Peavy’s as valuable as Bedard/Haren, it’s roughly the equivalent of Schafer + Hanson (or whoever our 2nd best pitching prospect is) + a good prospect (a really good one if no Hanson) + a couple decent prospects. But it sounds like to me he’s less valuable, so I’m not sure.
Anyway I really don’t want to see Hanson or Heyward or Yunel traded.

Haren was the guy that Law thinks Peavy compares to the most. For Haren, who the Diamondbacks could control for three years (08,09,10), the A’s got Carlos Gonzalez (Arizona’s number 1 prospect), Brett Anderson (3), Dana Eveland (little big league experience), Greg Smith (13), Aaron Cunningham (7), and Chris Carter (8) and Oakland also gave up Connor Robertson.
Harden could be controlled by Chicago for a year and a half (08,09) and along with Chad Gaudin, a fringe lefty with big league experience, commanded Sean Gallagher (Cubs’ 5), Matt Murton (bench player), Eric Patterson (12), and Josh Donaldson (7).
Really, after detailing it out by their prospect ranking, Hanson and Schafer and KJ, or two or three prospects to replace KJ, seems like what it would take. Crap.
So the difference in the package between Haren and Harden was huge, but Harden also had an injury history that Haren didn’t.

Just the fact
that Hanson is being mentioned in their paper makes me nervous that Wren will do something stupid. He made a great deal with Detroit last year and now we’re playing the role of the Tigers in this one……

My guess on the trade
don’t bash me:
Yunel, Jo-Jo, Schafer, and Rohrbough for Peavy and Greene

I’m with you on Jo-Jo. If the Padres want young pitching you’d have to believe that he’d be attractive to them. He’s pitched well at AAA and could probably use a change of scenery and what better place for him than home? I think if he went there he’d do really well.

Why would anyone want him? He hasn’t shown he can stick in the Majors after a fairly significant amount of starts. The potential is fading. You know how fans of other teams trade to pawn off their crap in trades for star players? Jo-Jo is our crap, he’s a throw in right now.
Jeff Francoeur is a lot more valuable than Jo-Jo Reyes. Jeff has had several years of success in the Majors with reasons to believe he’ll bounce back to the player he was. Jo-Jo has never reached the player he should be to stick around in the Majors and there’s no reason to believe he’ll all the sudden turn the page.
I just don’t see how Jo-Jo has any value to any team. Sure, he might could use a change of scenery. But how do we know that’s what he needs? How does the team trading for him know that? He has little value if any right.
I’m not bashing Jo-Jo, I still think he has potential to be an mid-rotation innings eater. But right now, he hasn’t shown that he is that type of player. I just have a hard time believing that Towers wants Jo-Jo in a deal and I hope the Braves don’t sell low on him.

I’m gonna have to disagree. I’d think just about any team would want a 24 year old lefty that has dominated at AAA, even with his problems in the majors, mainly because any pitching coach good enough to be in the majors has a big enough ego to say, “I can fix him”. Now does this mean that a team is going to go out and look to acquire Jo-Jo or give up a lot to get him? No, I doubt it. But he does have value, even if it’s trading our “crap” for their “crap”, the classic change-of-scenery trade.

And he is a lefty after all..
..and there are always jobs for guys who a left handed and can breath.

Jo-Jo has more trade value than Jeff Francoeur.

I was going to make a snarky comment about Francoeur sucking, but I actually think he has more upside than Jo-Jo. At least Jeff has shown some success at the major league level.

anytime you are arguing over
jo jo reyes and jeff francoeur (statistically the worst RF in baseball last season), you know things have gotten bad.

I would have no problem including Hanson in a deal for Peavy. Peavy is an established #1 starter and still young. Hanson may be a 2 or 3. As to Escobar he won’t be dealt. And we certainly don’t want Greene.

I am glad
Kelly Johnson, Tommy Hanson and Jordan Schafer is far too much to give up for Peavy.
I’d keep Hanson and Heyward out of it….as well as Escobar.
Kelly Johnson, Tyler Flowers, Jo Jo Reyes, Jeff Locke and some Low A pitcher not named Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado

Change of heart
I must admit, I was on “do whatever it takes to get Peavy” bandwagon for a while. But now I’ve cooled off somewhat. I think what is happening is that people are thinking it’s either Peavy headlining our rotation or we’re stuck with JJ and Campillo. We’re forgetting that there are plenty of FAs out there that will be targeted by Wren. Would you rather have a combination of Lowe, Burnett, Wolf, etc and keep Hanson or would you rather have Peavy and lose Hanson. I’m leaning more to the former.

Peavy is a must have in my eyes
I’ve been dreaming of Peavy in a Braves uniform for a few years now, and I was extremely disappointed when he signed with the Pads again. Now they are holding him for ransom, when he would have been a free agent this winter (if my memory serves me well). I don’t want to see Schafer go, but to me, Hanson is expendable if you can lock in an ace like Peavy. To say that he has not been consistently dominant is retarded. We are talking about a 27 year old who won the 2007 Cy Young. Sure, he had a losing record this year, but that wasn’t his fault. He’s pitched 7 seasons in the Bigs, and had a sub 3 ERA four times. He’s also struck out over 200 in three of those seasons. If Wren is serious about adding two proven starters this offseason, why wouldn’t you go hard for Peavy? Instead he’s trying to bring Hampton back? Please.
Okay, so Hanson isn’t expendable, but I hope you get my drift. I don’t want to see Yunel go anywhere, especially when the Bravos don’t have a SS in AAA right now (according to the Gwinnett website) and dude in AA is already 26 years old. Who is on deck for SS duty if they did move Yunel (I’m honestly asking here)?
NEBraves Fan, I posted a piece on my blog about that article earlier. Please feel free to comment away… thesportsidiot.com
