Baseball America posted their wrapup of NL East teams' international signings (subscription required). They listed each of these Braves players who signed for more than six figures: LHP Carlos Perez, Dominican Republic, 16; OF Fredy Gamboa, Columbia, 16; RHP Ernesto Silva, Panama, 16; OF Hector Garcia, Columbia, OF, 16; RHP Wei Cheng Huang, Taiwan, 18; SS Fernando De Los Santos, Dominican Republic, 18; RHP Eduardo Castillo, Dominican Republic, 17; RHP Amabale Nin, Dominican Republic, 18; C Meng Hsiu Tsai, Taiwan, 18.

The Braves spent $2,230,000 overall to rank eighth in the majors in international spending. Our NL East foes didn't spend even half that much combined, with only four signings and under $1M between the Mets and Phillies, and no signings from the Marlins and Nationals.

Is the subscription to BaseballAmerica worth it? If so, do you guys recommend just the website or the magazine, too? I’m debating getting it.

Good

I’m excited about seeing the Braves spending so much effort (money) on international prospects. While they’ve they can compete without going overseas, it sure makes it that much more difficult.
I’m especially glad to see them tap the Asian market. I’d love to see Ichiro Jr in the outfield in the near future.

I’m with you man, especially about the Asian guys. They keep getting guys they’re hight on and they never seem to pan out. Jang Ji Cho was supposed to be really good and he turned out to be a head case. Jung Bong was good for a bit and at least they were able to get something out of him in a trade (I think Mike Remlinger, which was huge). There was an outfielder a couple of years ago they really thought a lot of (something like Takuma, I can’t remember, nice kid) and he’s not even in the organization. And Ryohei Shimabukaru seems to be taking a while to progress, though I still think he’s got a shot. The only guy that I’ve seen in the system right now that could have any impact is Sung Ki Jung, who is straight filthy, but missed three years when he had to go into the Korean military. I’m with you, I’d like to see the next Ichiro or even Hideki Irabu come out of the system, but I don’t know if it’s gonna happen.

Yeah, that one didn’t work out so well. Thanks for correcting me.

no problem. Well it didn’t work out so well for the Reds either. I dont think Nelson ever did anything for the Reds and Bong didn’t do much either, at least we dont sit back and regret that trade cause it didn’t help neither one of us, but it was a good trade at the time cause Rietsma was very good with the Reds.

Yeah, it was a good trade at the time. I think Rietsma probably pitched better with the Braves than he would have with the Reds, but I think both Bong and Bubba did much worse than they would have with the Braves. Bong played like a year, blew out his arm and has been out of US baseball (as far as I know) for a while, but he did win a gold medal this year at the Olympics. Bubba was amazing with the Braves but he blew his arm out too and has been bouncing around AAA; he’s the same great guy, but the ability he had is long gone. And I saw Rietsma pitch for team Canada just before they left for China and he looked terrible, his fastball was about 84.
