2008 Braves potential 25 man roster

This is a possibility for our 2008 team: C- McCann, 1B- Tex, 2nd- KJ, SS- Escobar, 3rd- Chipper Jones, RF- Brandon Jones, CF- Frenchy, LF- Diaz(No reason he should not start next year, what more can the dude do).

This is the potential Starters: #1- Smoltz, #2- Hudson, #3- the pitcher we get in the Renteria deal, #4- James(maybe THIS offseason he will work on another pitch, INSTEAD of working for Lowes), #5- this is what ever JS thinks he can do, potentially Byrd, Hernandez, Reyes, Hampton, Cormier, OR some other unknown!

This is the potential Relievers: Yates, Ring, Paronto,Devine, Acosta, Moylan, and Soriano!

This is our bench: Lillibridge(Super Utility player), Pena, Prado, maybe Harris, and MAYBE Julio Franco for ONE last year of his career and ONE last run at a SERIOUS Championship for at least five years! Next year IS our year, OR we will have to wait for awhile!

I like Renteria as much as the next guy, but our season is really gonna depend on what we get for him! And Eckstein is the ONLY descent SS on the Free agent market in the offseason! A-Rod MIGHT opt out, but even IF he does he will command at least 25-30 million a year so he will price himself out of a lot of teams payroll! This is the guys that we MIGHT be able to get: The Cubs Rich Hill, the A's Joe Blanton, the White Sox Javier Vasques, and maybe the Tigers Andrew Miller! The Tigers have thought about moving Guillen from SS to another position! But alot of other teams will also be interested! We might even have to be involved in a 3 OR 4 team trade! I see Renteria with another uniform on next year!
What do yall think about this? Yall agree or disagree?

This is my FIRST diary on talking chop!

I seriously disagree
and it's not about Yunel. Frenchy can't play CF, not enough range, same for BJ in CF. The potential bullpen scares me. NO Yates, Ring, or Paronto! replace them with Gonzo, Dotel, and Ascaino. Glavine has a chance to be the #5 and I think Yunel will be traded instead of Rent.

My Bench
Pena
Lilli
Harris
Julio
Diaz

We need to sign a CF and BJ/Diaz share time in LF

Keep dreaming
"This is the guys that we MIGHT be able to get: The Cubs Rich Hill, the A's Joe Blanton, the White Sox Javier Vasques, and maybe the Tigers Andrew Miller"

Renteria, for one year, no matter how cheap won't bring in one of those guys, especially not Andrew Miller.  Without many prospects close to the majors anymore (Brandon Jones and Lillibridge are about all that qualify for that distinction) we don't have much to include either.  I think Renteria has a decent shot of getting traded, but his value is below Escobar just due to age/contract, we aren't gonna get anywhere near a great pitcher for him straight up.

I have heard from Multiple people that Frenchy CAN play CF! Brandon Jones can play RF, and Diaz can play LF! Who would you rather have starting the outfield for us dude? Brandon Jones in RF, Frenchy in CF, and Diaz in LF, OR BJ/Diaz in LF, Frenchy in RF and a guy like Cameron in CF? I know what your answer is, but seriously which one looks better? An aging Cameron in CF or a Young Frenchy in CF! Cameron I think will be 35 next April! And Cameron will comman a 3 year deal! It aint worth it dude! I would rather trust Frenchy out there!

Frenchy
doesn't have the range, and I'd take Torii Hunter

I'd take him too
I'd also take A-Rod once he opts out of his contract, Peavy and Santana when they reach free agency, Miggy would be nice once he is a free agent as well. Unfortunately there is this thing called money and a budget that can get in the way.

No dude Renteria's value is FAR greater than Lillibridge OR Escobar's! It just is!

eh
Edgar is above Lillibridge, but I doubt Escobar.  Which would you rather have if you need a SS- 1 Year of a 32(?) All-Star for $6 million or 5 years (2 at a few hundred thousand, the next 3 in arby) of a 24 year-old experienced league average with some potential SS?  Escobar is the more valuable commodity, even if clearly the inferior player.

You have to realize that come opening day Gonzo won't be playing for us, he will be injured until at least July! I was referring to April with this lineup! Dude you do realize who our manager is dont you? Yates Will be here and Paronto might be here, might not! I want Dotel to resign also, but we dont usually resign good bullpen arms! And JS traded for Ring for a purpose! I dont think he will resign Mahay, and Ring will PROBABLY be the ONLY Lefty out of the bullpen in April!

Dotel
I could be mistaken, but I am fairly certain that there is a team option in Dotel's contract for somewhere between $3mil and $5mil - which I think would be completely reasonable, assuming his elbow/shoulder is intact.
Agree that Gonzo will not be available to June at the earliest.

Player Option
$5.5M

Hizilla
Yeah I think Dotel's got a option for about 5 million next year! But I think it is a player option! He might try to get a long term deal! Like 3 years and 15 million! 5 million a year for 3 years! So I dont think we will resign him! But some of these names are not going to make the roster, so you never know! Most will, but a few that I named won't!

My mistake.
Agree - although if he doesn't come off the DL before the end of the season, 1 year at 5.5 may be in his best interest.

Like I said before...
I would pay to keep Javier "I love to give up the long ball" Vasquez off the Braves!

by mvandonsel on Aug 28, 2007 3:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ok but
would you rather have lance "i love to give up the long ball" cormier, or jojo "i love to give up the long ball" reyes?

by MIZIKE74 on Aug 28, 2007 3:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a difficult question to answer...
because Cormier (27) and Reyes (23) are both young players meaning that they could mature and improve to become pretty good pitchers, giving up less homeruns as they get better.  However, Vazquez (31) has at times been brilliant, but he's a head case and has given up an average of 27.2 homeruns a year over his carreer with 26 this year, 23 last year, 35 in 2005, and 33 in 2004.  As of right now, I don't want any of the three on the Atlanta Brave roster.  With that said we already have Reyes and Cormier in our system and a big reason they are pitching right now is because of injuries and the ineffectiveness of the 3-5 pitchers.  Would either of them be seeing anytime if Hampton wouldn't have gotten hurt again, or if Redman panned out for us?  Doubt it.  I just don't favor trading a good player, especially Renteria, for a player like Vasquez with his 4.Plus career era when we already have people on our team who can give up the long ball.  Why bring in more mediocrity?

by mvandonsel on Aug 28, 2007 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts
Octavio Dote has a 5.5 million dollar player option on his contract, that is what the announcers said the nite that he was traded to the braves.  I do not know about yall, but as inconsistient coming off injuries as he has been, while still getting injured, i do not know if i want that type of commitment.  But whatever, he is a valuable arm still in my mind.

Another thing is that if we do trade renteria, its not going to be a young pitcher like andruw renteria.  First off, the other team is not going to trade away a young potential ace, on of the most precious assets to have.  From our prospective, we are not going to trade away renteria to get a young inconsistient pitcher like andrew miller.  That is what is killing us this year.  Renteria will be traded for a proven three who at times can pitch like a 2, such as a vazquez or a blanton.  I really think that the Renteria deal to either Chicago team could be visitend in the offseason.

My third thing is that if renteria is traded, i really think that the braves will go out and try and sign a veteran centerfielder to give some vertern leadership on the team with chipper.  No matter what anyone says, mike cameron is not a 10 million a year centerfielder, so that will not happen.  Willie and Lillibridge are our best internal candidates, but no way that platoon happens.  I say that we will make a trade for a fourth outfielder who has proven himself this year to play our centerfield posiiton, or try chris duffy from the pirates.  These are purely just some thoughts.

bravessuperbeast
Well the Tigers would probably trade Miller for Renteria! Mainly because IF they can move Guillen to another position, and Renteria to SS that would put them in a great position to win next year! They already have Verlander, Bonderman, Rodgers(for potentially one final season), Robertson, and could decide to start Zack Minor again! That is still a solid rotation! I could very easily see Miller for Renteria get done! And believe me the Braves would be ALL over that!

Rockybull
No, the tigers would not trade miller for renteria.  It makes no sense, especially given the fact that robertson and rogers were both hurt already this year, and also that pitching is a strong asset of the tigers.  It would make no sense for them to trade away what could potentially be one of the best young talents in baseball.  And I also say that the braves could be all over miller, but the liklihood of them targeting miller is slim to none because they want consisitent production out of the pitcher they get in return for renteria, and miller is not seasoned enough to offer that yet.

by bravessuperbeast on Aug 28, 2007 8:31 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, bravessuperbeast
I think the Braves would take Miller in a heartbeat for Renteria, but your concerns ring true: he doesn't really fit into the plans (well, as much as a stud young starter can't fit into anyone's plans), and he's probably on the Tigers' untouchable list.  Vazquez is probably the best realistic option out there, but I don't know if the White Sox are wanting to trade him (and if Kenny Williams will be at all reasonable if they were willing to trade him).

by Something Profound on Aug 28, 2007 8:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Perspective.
Guys, just because Rents is one of the best SS in the game doesn't mean that he'll fetch one of the best pitchers in the game.  The simple fact of the matter is that pitching is more valuable than hitting AND quality starting pitching is more rare than acceptable play from SS.  Let me put it this way: it's far more acceptable to have average play from a position player who is only 1/9 of your line-up and defense than it is to have average play from a starter who is 1/5 of your rotation.  I mean, even though Rents has been as valuable as Smoltz (as measured by VORP) this season, would anyone here think that trading them for each other would be a balanced deal for two theoretical teams?

Cain, Blanton and Vazquez would be fine returns for Rents and I would not be surprised to see that we'd need to add someone like Jo-Jo Reyes to even make those deals work.  Rich Hill is an intriguing name, while I'd Gorzelanny to the mix if the Pirates could dump Jack Wilson.  Guys like Noah Lowry and Ian Snell would be acceptable consolation prizes, though it'd be for Rents alone or with us getting a little something extra.

Oh, and by the way, Andrew Miller was a Top 10 prospect in baseball before this season according to Baseball America and has done nothing to discredit that consideration.  He was flanked on that list by the likes of Tim Lincecum and Arizona's young OF (Upton and Young) so there is no way he gets traded for anyone.  It's nice to dream, but let's not get carried away.

Come check out my blog 52 Card Pick-up and let me know what you think!

of those, Cain is untouchable, Lowry probably too. The Pirates can't use a year of Renteria for Snell or Gorzelanny because he won't make a difference next year for them and they can't resign him.  Blanton and Vazquez would most likely take Renteria, Jo-Jo, plus, and I don't see Rich Hill being easy to get either.

Lets not get too Crazy here
Again, no team is going to trade away a potential future ace for renteria.  This includes Cain and Miller.  It just is not going to happen.  Going with that trend, I could see noah lowry as a very good option to come back in a renteria trade even though i think we would need to get more compensation.  Again, that trade is gonna depend if the giants make the right moves and think they can compete.  Again, my main argument is that if we are going to trade renteria, it needs to be for a proven veteran.  If our team is set to compete just for next year, and we are going to trade away such a valuable piece like edgar, we had better get someone who will be dependable.  That being said, i sincerely think that Javier Vazquez is our best way to go, and I really do not think that the pirates would trade away snell or gorzelanny for Renteria.  They would want Yunel, as would any team that would trade away a young pitcher, they would want the younger hitter

by bravessuperbeast on Aug 28, 2007 4:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I still maintain
we can get a talent like Harden for Rents.  Problem is, he's not a proven veteran and is oft injured.  He would be a high risk, high reward trade if nothing come along such as the likes of Lowry or Vazquez.

Please tell me....
why you think Vasquez is the best way to go for the Braves.

bravessuperbeast
You might be right, but still I would not be surprised IF it did happen! I never said it would happen I said maybe! But I do think for Renteria and Reyes and maybe a lesser prospect we could get Miller! The Tigers have a good minors full or good young pitching! They could afford to let this guy go! They are SO close to winning the World Series! They get rid of Casey, and move Guillen to First and put Renteria at SS that would be awesome! Dont tell me that it would not be awesome! That trade scenario is more realistic than yall think! But never said it would happen! I think it could though!
