Open Thread and NAHWAL: Braves at Reds (8/22)

 Today's Starting Pitchers

 Lance Cormier
Braves
vs.
 Bronson Arroyo
Reds
0-3 W-L 6-13
9.90 ERA 4.58
9 SO 116
12 BB 49
10 HR 19
vs.
Reds
-- vs.
Braves

Game Time: 7:10 on

I never thought it would come to this, but - sighhhhh. Where the hell is David Wells? Let's just get this over with.

Really, though, when you can't beat the Reds with seven runs and your next two starters are on the iffy side to say the least . . . but I won't turn to despair just yet (as if dreaming of David Wells joining your staff isn't the very definition of despair . . .). God forbid we ever have any momentum, though, or even a three game winning streak.

But never fear: we're getting our slightly impatient Rent back today:

"I'd prefer to play every day, rather than run the figure-8s," said Renteria.

Is that some kind of metaphor for our season? Probably.

Don't forget to get your picks in before the game for Nok-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta (click here to learn how to play and to view the leaderboard); the three categories are (1) Attendance, (2) Pick to Click, and (3) Above and Beyond Pick.

I was thinking the same thing . . .
when the Padres waived him.  Wells is clearly past his best days, but he is probably better than anything else we have in the 5 (and currently the 4) spot.

Wickman and Boomer on the same team?  I'd pay to see them tackle an all-you-can-eat joint together.

  1.  28,937
  2.  Tex
  3.  Tex has 6 or more total bases tonight.

Yeah
If we sign Wells everyone in Atlanta can expect the price at Golden Corral to skyrocket.  Maybe even as far as here in Chattanooga.
Go Braves!

Classic...and very sad.

Excuse my...

Man, this one can't go well.  Our pitcher who has more home runs allowed than strikeouts, facing a pitcher we wish we could have gotten at the trade deadline.

by Smoltzs Beard on Aug 22, 2007 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, now it's a tie
between home runs allowed and strikeouts... 12 each, in 25 innings.

I just heard that Lance was pulled due to a whiplash injury.

Can Roger McDowell still pitch?

Did anyone else notice...
the return of "Extremely Cynical Joe" Simpson last night?  Not that he's ever left, of course, it's just that he was a little more extreme.  I'm not complaining, because he often echoes my sentiments.

by sddbaker on Aug 22, 2007 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

ooh, I should have listened to the TV broadcast
Extremely Cynical Joe got me through 2006. Well, he and "let's tell stories about when they were REALLY bad!" Skip & Pete, but that goes without saying.

blaaa
3-0 to down 5-3?? .... then 7-5 to down 8-7??

and of all people, our trusty aussie was throwing at the Reds crotches and missing badly. I think he was jinxed by Joe Simpson in the pre-game

I'm bad news
My picks are cursing the team.  I believe that, as a good fan, I will refrain from picking anything by my nose until A: Chuck James returns
B:  Edgar Returns and C:  Julio returns.

Last night's meltdown has me in a funk.

by Chin Music on Aug 22, 2007 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

If your joking
Let me just say this: Ya'll aren't cursing the team! No matter if you pick or not, it's still the same outcome! Don't worry and be superstitious! Just have fun and Pick! Ya'll are taking that too seriously!

Curses...
Now, Edgar is out again.  I picked the wrong week to give up booze.  C'mon, Yunel!  Glad we have 'ya!

I'm thinking of quitting the picks...
solely for my health

I get my hopes up, and get so angry because most of my AAB picks include the words "Braves win"

This season...
Is becoming more frustrating than last.  The continual losses to sub .500 teams is just disgusting. We are an injury away to Chipper, Tex, or especially Smoltz or Hudson from saying 'just wait 'til next year".  Period.  Did anyone else just hold their breath when Chipper slid into 2nd last night? Can't believe Rent is out again, sure is a good thing we have Yunel.

I switched over after the loss to enjoy watching the Mets lose and damn if they didn't almost ruin my latest attempt at sobriety by nearly beating Hoffman AGAIN.  That would have been SEVEN games out.  Now, where's my BP meds?

by SpeedTriple on Aug 23, 2007 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

NAHWAL Results
Attendance was 22,924, and with a guess of 23,412, mhsiegal14 gets the point.

Picks to click were Heap, Andruw and Chipper. Points go to whunt13, Something Profound, jobrave, brndn, mhsiegal14, rawleigh, and kray1000.

None of the AAB picks panned out.
