Open Thread and Noc-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta: Astros at Braves (8/2)

 Today's Starting Pitchers

 J. Reyes
Braves
vs.
 W. Williams
Astros
0-1 W-L 5-12
8.20 ERA 5.14
6 SO 67
11 BB 36
5 HR 23
vs.
Astros
-- vs.
Braves

Game Time: 7:35pm on

I am really liking this run scoring thing the team has going. Woody Williams, the pitcher we face tonight, his record is 5-and-12, and I wonder if that will be the score (in our favor of course). The way things have been going I wouldn't bet against it.

It was great to see all the new guys do so well last night. Tex looks like an imposing force in the batters box, Mahay looks like a grizzled old veteran, and Dotel looks like he was made for a Braves uniform.

Don't forget to get your picks in before the game for Nok-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta (click here to learn how to play and to view the leaderboard); the three categories are (1) Attendance, (2) Pick to Click, and (3) Above and Beyond Pick.

This is the LAST day to order t-shirts.

Allow me to pimp my shirts for one last day. Orders will cut off at midnight tonight, so if you want one you better get it now.

What a terrible game...
  1.  Jo Jo Reyes isn't ready for the majors.  He's been terrible.  Mark Redman-like.  I don't wanna hear "he's young".  He still can't get the job done.  Next year, sure.  Not now.  Bring up Cormier again.  Try Dan Smith.  See what he can do.  He really can't be any worse than what Reyes has been, and who knows what this is doing to Reyes' psyche for next year?
  2.  Soriano should not pitch the 8th inning.  Swap his and Dotel's role today.  Soriano can pitch the 6th and 7th innings and rest until he proves he can throw a pitch without giving up a HR or giving up the lead.  Frankly, its been disgusting.  And don't get me started on Wickman...but one head of the hydra at a time, right?
  3.  Andruw continues to hurt us in key situations.  Why is he still batting 5th?  Power is the only reason I can think of.  Its been dissected often enough, but really, how terrible can a person be with RISP?  Throw him a breaking ball w/RISP and he looks like a lost puppy out there, flailing away.
  4.  I can tell right now that Thorman is going to be a terrible bench player.  I don't think much more needs to be said about this one.  I suppose his only value is that he's LH.  But no options, right?
I try not to be such a negative nancy after games like this and so soon after the game, but I just had to get this off my chest.  Thanks for putting up with me.  Urgh.

by Something Profound on Aug 3, 2007 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with most you have to say...
however, seeing how  every starting position player left multiple men on base I would have to disagree that Andruw was the one who hurt us today.  Kelly Johnson LEFT 7 PEOPLE ON BASE, Renteria LEFT 5 PEOPLE ON BASE, Harris LEFT 4 ON BASE, as a team we left 14 men on base total.  With that said the simple fact is that we should have won that game and hopefully this loss will not come back to bite us either mentally or physically (through injury to Renteria, Frenchy, Chipper, or one of the other 10 player who got hurt tonight).  Bottom line, we need to do something about Jo-Jo and Soriano.

On a lighter note, did anybody else think that it was halarious when Wickman fell trying to catch that pop-up.  It was a good play and all, he must have thought it was a twinkie or something.

by mvandonsel on Aug 3, 2007 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Chipper...
and don't forget that Chipper grounded into two double plays.

Regardless of who to blame, I'm not that upset with the loss, other than putting off some work that needed to be done to keep watching it (which I now have to stay up and finish).  Yes, it's frustrating to lose one like this, but the Braves didn't give up and fought pretty hard under the circumstances.

Plus, this team doing a damn fine job on offense.

Responses
  1.  Agreed.  He really shouldn't be up here playing, and I hope he is sent back down to Richmond.  I think Cormier gets another shot based on his recent performance (I think he starts for Richmond again tomorrow).  However, it will be interesting to see how they handle it.  Since the Braves have an off-day on Monday, I think the #5 spot will be skipped so Smoltz and Hudson can pitch against NY.
  2.  I agree with Rain below.  Make up something and put him on the DL.  The Braves need the 1st half Soriano back.  We have plenty of options in the minors that can fill in right now - Paronto/Devine/Ascanio/Ring.  (Ring had 3K's in 2IP tonight).
  3.  As mentioned above, it wasn't just Andruw who failed with RISP tonight.  However, I don't know how much I can fault a team that had 22 hits, and scored in double digits for their 4th straight game.  The brunt of the loss tonight goes to a couple of poor pitching performances (Reyes/Soriano) and some shoddy defense.
  4.  Yep, no other options.  Plus, he's really the 3rd or 4th pinch hitter off the bench.  Who is worse - Thorman or Woodward?  Anyways, the point is that you're typically not going to need the 3rd or 4th pinch hitter unless the starter only goes 3 innings or the game goes to extra innings.  I can live with him in this limited role, and I would bet that he'll come through as a pinch hitter a few times down the stretch.  I'm not really sure why I believe that - maybe it's that extra hustle that he always displays - you know that is why Bobby loves him.

...what a depressing loss.
  1. Agreed
  2. It's not a matter of fact he should be pitching the 8th inning, he should. But not at the moment, everyone and their mother knows he's been over worked - He needs a DL stint. Call up Devine. Two weeks rest should do Raffy some good.
  3. Agreed.
  4. It's not like we really have another choice.
  5. I still can't believe that we tried to sell Diaz to a Japanese team in the off season.
  6. I have to give props to Villarreal for getting his first hit, when we really kinda needed. To bad nothing came of it.
Bill Bavasi the GM of the Mariners had a quote the other day that at first I thought was absurd but the more I think about it the more it makes sense.

Mind you my kinda paraphrasing.

"You can't rely on kids in a pennant race"
- And that would sum up Jo-Jo, I'm not sure if Cormier is the answer. yes he's had some good starts lately in Richmond, but he did that just before his last call up and got BLASTED in the Show.

Something has to be done with the rotation, but it's not like we've got a lot of options.

by Rain Delay on Aug 3, 2007 1:30 AM EDT reply actions

Bavasi's quote
I still think it's absurd.  I don't think Jo-Jo's youth is the issue.  I think it's the fact that he's not really that good enought to be a major league starting pitcher at this point.  For example, I think everyone would love to have Tim Lincecum as one of our starters in this pennant race, and he's only 5 months older than Reyes.  He's just a better pitcher than Reyes.

Think back to the 2005 season when the Braves relied so heavily on Francoeur and McCann in the second half of the season to make the playoffs.  They were both kids who performed great in the pennant race.

by KLB on Aug 3, 2007 3:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Great point...
...it just comes down to JoJo's inability to get ahead and counts and pound the strikezone.

by Smoltzs Beard on Aug 3, 2007 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Adam Jones
Rain Delay - as a Mariner's fan (right?), what do you think about Bavasi's quote with respect to the Mariners calling up Adam Jones?

by KLB on Aug 3, 2007 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions

BB..
..sometimes comes off as a schlub who doesn't have a clue. Adams Jones is an instant upgrade in defense alone if you put him out in left field. Raul Ibanez is horrible defensively, and a below average arm.

Their reluctance to call up Jones until now just boggles my mind. I can't stand their mentality of not wanting to screw things up and 'relying' on kids and what not.

Jones is a smart move. period. I have a feeling he's going to do nothing but rot on the bench like last year when he was called up. It's frustrating, the M's have a chance at the play offs. Adam Jones helps those chances, yet it's almost like it was like pulling teeth to call up AJ.

by Rain Delay on Aug 3, 2007 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

It was not
the offense's fault.  I could have hit that t-ball pitch that Soriano threw.  I am surprised somebody didn't kick his rear for throwing that pitch.  Just awful.  No big league pitcher should be throwing a pitch like that with the bases loaded.  Walk in a run!  I don't care!  The ONE THING YOU CANNOT DO IN THAT SITUATION is throw a homerun pitch!  And what did you do, fool?
Go Braves!
