Game Time: 7:35pm on

A new month and a new Braves team. We'll find out today who stays in the bullpen and who goes. If you watched the game last night (or were at the game) you should agree that the scene in the later innings when Teixeira arrived in the dugout and got a standing ovation from the crowd after they showed him on the big screen was pretty cool - maybe even really cool. That made me very proud of the Atlanta crowd.

One of the comments I picked up on during the telecast last night was one attributed to Schuerholz in which he basically said that they couldn't get any starting pitching at a reasonable price, so they decided to acquire the offense and try and outscore all their opponents. That's going to make for some fun games. I'm also rather excited to have Jo-Jo stay and try and develop for the remainder of the year. Of course, that begs the question, who is our backup starter if someone should go down? Kevin Barry?

Don't forget to get your picks in before the game for Nok-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta (click here to learn how to play and to view the leaderboard); the three categories are (1) Attendance, (2) Pick to Click, and (3) Above and Beyond Pick.

...and...

Order from July 29th until August 2nd.

Click here to go to the order page.

Regardless of whether you buy a shirt (though you should), tell all the people you know to wear black to the Braves/Giants series in mid-August. Spread the word through e-mail, over the interweb, tell people you work with, yell out your window and inform your neighbors.

Let's "Blackout" the Ted August 14th through the 16th!

Back Up Starter
Good question . . . who is our back up starter?  Anthony Lerew (eek), Villareal (oh no), Soriano (oh crap).

by JDMaker1 on Aug 1, 2007 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Lerew...
..had Tommy John Surgery, so he's out of the equation.

by Rain Delay on Aug 1, 2007 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Makes sense
It looks like Lance had a quality start in Richmond his last time out.  I saw him get beat up pretty bad a few weeks ago though.  Lets just hope we don't have to find a 6th starter.

by JDMaker1 on Aug 1, 2007 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually..
..the Vulcher didn't do to shabby last year when he got some spot starts. Soriano used to be a starter, but the M's groomed him to be a set up man. There was talk last year in Seattle to move him back to the rotation, but that was shot down by Hargrove at the time.

by Rain Delay on Aug 1, 2007 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorrry for the double post but,
Gondee, I live in Richmond but I still bought a shirt for myself and my brother.  I like what you're doing here.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait.
No national TBS broadcasts next year??  That settles it.  MLB.tv, if I can get cooperation out of my cable internet... motions a very rude gesture to his provider

6th Starter.
I don't see a single guy who's started a significant ammount of games that has a decent set of stats... my guess is we either bite the Barry/Cormier bullet or take a shot with Dan Smith.  Man, there's really nothing there are far as high level starters on the farm!

notice that Salty is lining up at 1B for the Rangers tonight(he already has 2 RBIs). Are the Rangers expecting him to play 1B? or will he eventually line up at catcher?

the rest of the year Salt will be playing forst 5 times a week and catching 2 times a week...

Buddy!
Say it isn't so!  I hope Carlyle isn't seriously injured, but I get nervous anytime I see a pitcher grabbing at his elbow . . .

by supesk6 on Aug 1, 2007 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

He grabbed his elbow? Crap.
I'm only watching the game on gamecast...have the announcers given any indication as to the extent of the injury?

by Something Profound on Aug 1, 2007 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

D'oh!
The boys in the both are speculating that he simply hyper-extended it on the swing . . . but they've got nothing to back it up other than wishful thinking.  No word from anyone in the Braves clubhouse.

If Tex is really our savior, can he feed the whole club with one bag of sunflower seeds AND throw every fifth day?

by supesk6 on Aug 1, 2007 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Allow myself to reply to myself
"Official" word is that it is a hyper-extension and that Carlyle is "day to day".

I have a hard time believing they won't do an MRI sometime in the near future.  Hopefully all is in good order.

by supesk6 on Aug 1, 2007 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

WOOO
Mark Teixeira homers (14) on a fly ball to left field.  Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones score.

That is all.

by Something Profound on Aug 1, 2007 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Actually...
..it would be his first home run. As his stats don't carry over from the American League (which I find irritating since we're in the Inter-League era anyways..)

by Rain Delay on Aug 1, 2007 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Well
they don't count for the Braves, but they still count for his career/year.

The homerun...
...and his two K's aside (the ump had a crazy low strikezone), it's just nice to see someone batting behind Chipper that can work the plate.
