Andruw Jones

The Braves finished just 2 games back in the East and the Wildcard. Not so bad. "They just need to acquire another pitcher that's all". This is what Andruw Jones said in the AJC. Do you think he has a right to decide what the team needs with the way he's played? I know he is a very important part of the team, but he just hasn't played well. I think he will turn it around the second half, but I think he should worry about his hitting before the pitching.

Yeah...
I actually do think he reserves the right to say that out loud.  In fact, I'm impressed with it.  It's pretty selfless and most importantly, it's true.  Walk year or not, he's a veteran leader on the team right now. If he only spoke up about that if he was playing well I would think that it would be self-serving.  Him opining about what the team needs shows he's present and that he actually cares about the team as a whole.  And I totally agree with you, Chipper, that he's going to turn it around.  Water seeks it's own level.  I think Boras has been bad for him this season because Boras is the one who is obsessed with 'walk' years.  I think the strain on Andruw comes from that.  He's going to turn it around - I think he's beginning to - and we're in good shape.  What a great way to go into the break.

You know what I think
about players who need Agents. I think they can't handle themselves, so they need someone else to. I would lose Scott Boras, who has been I think a bad influence on every player, (ex: Alex Rodriguez) and just handle everything myself. I would take all the offers, make the decisions, etc. But like Andruw said, the decisions are up to him. Hey Andruw, Newsflash: Scott Boras is only trying to take your money. He should use his dad like in 2001.

no
agents are key to going through all the legal matters in the contract and making sure that their client doesnt get screwed. sometimes contracts look good when you read the bold numbers and letters, but a lot of good and bad contracts are decided in the fine print.

and the way boras tries to make money isnt hurting the players, they make more money by Boras wanting to make more money for himself. its hurting the game of baseball because it is furthers the gap between high-market teams and low-market teams.

Do you think...
The Braves took a little bit of advantage of the fact that Andruw went without an agent last time?  I do.  I think - in relative baseball economics - the Braves got a sweet deal.  If we had given more is there more of a chance Andruw would go without an agent?  I doubt it.  It always seems the guys that go without ultimately get taken advantage of.  What they could do is get a great lawyer who works for an hourly rate and not percentage.  That's the mistake of the players.

Nah.
Maybe Boras could have gotten a little more money - but that 105 million dollar deal or what ever was good for him at the time. Agents to me have nothing to do with the game except negotiations. Players decide if it's enough or not. Agents just give them the offer.

Uneducated but well thought out response...
But...Andruw has all the money. He's gonna have a lot of influence because of that.

Anyway
At that time, Andruw hadn't proven his worth. He was just a 24 year old who had only been in the majors for 3 and some odd years. He thought he was getting a lot of money at the time, and he was. But now he sees that Scott Boras can get him more money.

Boras, Agents, Mizke
agents are key to going through all the legal matters in the contract and making sure that their client doesnt get screwed. sometimes contracts look good when you read the bold numbers and letters, but a lot of good and bad contracts are decided in the fine print.

I agree with that point to some extent, but a player could get the same treatment by having their attorney look at the contract.  Agents are about negotiations and marketing.  They attempt to make their play look as good as possible, I would Boras has an attorney review the contracts.

Boras is nothing but a glorified used car salesman.

Sorry
Sorry, my 2nd to last sentence should be "I would bet Boras . . ."

I know it's "only spring training," but is it time to be concerned about McLouth?
