Buehrle
According to ESPN Buehrle and Chicago reached terms on an extension of 4 years and $56 million, but talks fell apart because Chicago refused to give him a no-trade clause.
While this may mean that he is still available to Atlanta in trade, it seems unlikely to me that we will try and get him. There is no way JS would give him a no-trade clause, and there is no way they will trade for him without wrapping him up long-term. Maybe the Braves can find pitching elsewhere - any thoughts?

Erm...
Zach Duke can be had, but...really? Zack Duke? He hasn't been any better than Davies this year. I'm starting to come around more on Gorzelanny and Snell, but I still think we need guys with experience and who have competed in the stretch run. Also, you just don't know how the two Pitt starters will hold up when they have so few career IP. And then there's the issue of what we have to give up for them...
I've been wondering about Oswalt, myself. He'd be worth getting, but I just have no idea what it would take (my guess is at least Salty and a pitcher package). Nor do I have any idea whether the Astros have any inclination to trade him, much less are quietly shopping him. But he's the kind of guy that Schuerholz seems to pull out of the hat that no one sees coming.
Realistically we're going to try to make a run at Buerhle if it doesn't cost us our MLB prospects (Salty, Escobar, Reyes). I wouldn't be surprised if we consider giving up Harrison and Lillibridge for him, if indeed he can be had at that cost. We'll inquire about Oswalt, but I'd say Jason Jennings is more likely, and I would suspect that we don't make a move, simply because its way too much of a sellers market for Schuerholz to bet the ranch on a rental.

i definitely think we should go for gorzelanny. he is a big lefty and has greatly decreased his K/BB from last year. but everyone knows how injury prone pirate pitchers are and he has already had problems with his thumb and elbow this year. so i would settle for snell too.
but then again after the way buehrle pitched today, i would still love to him in the rotation

Renteria probably not going anywhere
On another note, it is frustrating to see other organizations bring up pitching prospects that pan out, and then watch the Braves bring up their pitchers to have them ger shelled - as Jo Jo did today. This is not to knock on Reyes, but I feel like this is a pattern, maybe they need to look at how they are developing their pitching talent. James is the best starter they have brought up in recent memory, and he is at best a 3 or a 4 starter. I hope that this trend does not continue, because like many of you I have alot of hope for the pitching that is in the pipeline, and am holding my breath for someone to come up and actually perform.

pirates
also KW is supposedly asking for three players, two being premier prospects for Beuhrle. This would be catastrophic if the braves gave up the two premier prospects most people are tihnking about. hopefully the ChiSox consider Jo-Jo Reyes premier

and just because Andrus might be able to compete at SS doesnt mean that Yunel wont be holding it down at 2b or 3b.

Maybe Chipper cutting his contract and losing money will give him incentive to go out and find a big market team that needs a bat and get some of the money that he lost from cutting his contract. Chipper is the man. Just because he isnt a Brave doesnt mean you cant support and root for him.

wait
The only way Andruw is still a Brave next year will be if Borasshole decides to go for a one year contract so he can get his numbers back on track and then leave for the Yankees/Red Sox/Angels for the 2009 season

Zach Duke sucks and not only is he on the block to go back down to triple A after spending about 3 years on the senior circuit, but he might undergo an exploratory medical procedure. The last thing the braves need is another pirates pitcher to get a dead arm.

by Chipper on Jul 11, 2007 5:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
nah
the only way the braves will get A LOT for Yunel is if he is packaged with Salty, or at least another prospect and a proven senior circuit guy. Yunel has done nothing but prove that he can contribute just as much as anyone else on the team, and he has shown that he is a utility type player. Why would the braves give that up and go back to using the useless Woodward and Orr in that spot. Especially since Cox loves utility guys.
The only pitchers worth trading Yunel for is: Blanton, Snell, Gorzelanny

wow
I love snell's mentality towards the game. he has the right attitude. heres an example: After the Pirates lost on June 23, 2007, 10-1 to the Los Angeles Angels, Snell said, "I [expletive] hate losing. I hate when the team doesn't bring out its full potential. And if they fine me, fine me. I don't care. Because this is getting stupid. We're better than what we're showing."
Lowry is just all right. he doesnt have the upside that the 2 pirates do. He has bad mechanics, relies on his change up way to much, and he hasnt improved his K/BB ratio since his rookie season, which is never a good sign for pitchers. im sick of watching finesse pitchers with fastballs in the 85-89 range. he is basically the second coming of Horacio Ramirez and Odalis Perez, which in my eyes is not a good thing for a prospect.
Lowry and Blanton are interchangable to me, but since Blanton has actually showed improvement since his rookie year and is more durable so i would rather have him. and i like the way he pushed that little softballer ichiro around.
