Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds. Or should I say Barroid Bonds. It is obvious he's on steroids. He will end up breaking the home run record. The thing is, he won't be the TRUE home run king. Hank Aaron is still the home run king even if Barry passes him. I have no sympathy for cheaters and he is definitely cheating. Jason Giambi says roids don't help a bit. Tell that to Sammy Sosa. He came up as a scrawny kid, a couple years later, boom. Big Muscles knocking balls out of the park. Same with Barry. MLB won't do anything about it. That's wrong. They know he's cheating and their letting him get away with it. They have that 3 strikes and your out program. Test positive and: 1st time: 50 game suspension 2nd time: 100 game suspension 3rd time: Banned. You know what's funny is that they continue to suspend minor league players for this kind of stuff, and that's good, but they haven't done anything to Barry. He's tested positive at least twice, no suspension, and I guarantee you if you checked now, you'll receive a positive test. He should be banned, but won't. He was almost a Brave in 1993, (thank God that didn't happen!), and I can only imagine if the Braves could have stopped him from being juiced.

Hey Gondeee
When I go to post something, and I hit enter, I'll post it and there's no line breaks. What's up with that?

Type
In the drop down below the posting box you've got several choices. Choose Auto Format and what you type will appear on the screen. You've probably got HTML in there right now and that's why it's messing up.

Tested Positive?
When has Barry ever tested positive for steroids, let alone twice? Also, I beleive he was a juicer, but there has never been in smoking gun proof that he has done them.
As far as cheating goes and him being suspended, I think it would be a travesty to suspend him. First, taking steroids (HGH) was not illegal in baseball, so he actually was not breaking any written rules if he had taken them.
Second, how do you suspend a man for doing something that a significant percentage of the players in the league were doing at the time, I mean Bud Selig was an owner and he knew damn well what was going on. I'm sick of him acting all high and mighty, trying to play it off like he had know idea. I would be willing to bet that the President of the United States knew what was going on, he was the owner of the Rangers when they had Palmerio (who has tested positve), Canseco (enough said), and Juan Gonzales (rumored, and probably true).
My point is that the ownership turned a blind eye, when they knew there was a problem. But when their sport and their teams were profiting from this, they had no problem with their players swelling up, as long as their pockets were swelling up too. They watched as the monster was being created, so they need to deal with the consequences and not seek to blame a single person for the problem just because he is probably the best player to ever play the game.

As far as Bonds and the record go. I beleive he should be considered the "homerun king". Actually I beleive he should be considered the "Best Ever". I hate saying this because I always kind of hated him growing up because he was my brother's favorite player, but over the years I haven't grown to like him, but I have certainly grown to greatly respect what he has done. This guy has won 7 MVP's (easily could have been 8 or 9, compare his season to Pendleton's the year Terry won and you will wonder why Terry got the crown instead of Barry). He's not all long ball either, this guy is the only guy in the 500/500 (homers/stolen bases) club, and you know how crazy that is.....he is also the only guy in the 400/400 club....think about that. Oh and he's not all offense, as his 8 gold gloves prove.
Well I have made this post long enough, I had actually only planned on writing a couple of lines and this is what it turned into. I'm sure this might spark a great debate, but those are always fun.

Yeah
you make great points, but he's a juicer and should just come out and say it now not after he breaks the home run record.

hmmm
You know I'm gonna side with whunt on this. His arguments are pretty much what i was gonna say. Esp the fact that none of it was illegal in baseball at the time. Granted there were no rules at all the steroids stuff (not well defined ones) and we may all agree that it is wrong to use steroids, but still, it wasn't illegal and it hasn't been proven that he did take anything though it may be obvious. Innocent until proven guilty. The fact remains too he still had a good chance to become the best player of all time even he didn't bulk up.

But
While everyone has made good points so far, he's still a cheater. Now that MLB has a policy for steroids now, and they are checking everyone else out except him, shouldn't they do something about it? I mean c'mon, comes up as a scrawny kid and within an offseason in what? '93, '94, he becomes the Hulk. Barry probably doesn't use them any more because he knows MLB will be checking.

except him?
You say that MLB is checking everyone else out except him.  Meaning they are not checking Barry Bonds?

Where do you have this knowledge?

The so-called Barry Bonds Haters often make statements, but rarely have the hard facts to back them up.

Do I think Bonds took steroids?  yes.  Do I think he deserves the HR Crown? no.  But, based on what MLB has done, I would allow him to gain it.  How can you not?  If he tests positive now, then suspend him.  If not, then crown him.  what other choice do you have?

Check again
I said before they started checking for steroids, he was using them. And when Jose Canseco wrote his book, didn't he say how they tested Barry Bonds? He's off them now, which is why he's slowing down, his age has a lot to do with it to, but it's mostly the roids. Jason Giambi says they don't help a bit, but ask was385. He'll tell you differently. He's said many stories about people in area on roids.

My personal opinion
is that it is the MLB as an entity that has cheapened Hank's record.  I have been through all of the emotions since McGwire and Sosa had their big summer, and I am past being upset with them.  MLB has obviously turned a blind eye to steroid use, as Chipper points out they keep "getting" minor leaguers, and they won't go after the big guys.  So how can you really be mad at Barry?  Or Sosa? Or Clemens? Or McGwire?  If it were me, and I saw that MLB was basically endorsing the use of steroids, I would probably do it to.
So, go Barry.  You're taking years off your life, I hope it was worth it.

It doesn't matter anyway because ARod is going to hit 1000.

Go Braves!

Now
Arod is steroid free and I would rather have him or Ken Jr. break it. I remember when the Braves almost had Arod in 2001(?). The Braves made an offer for 10 yrs, $126 mil. The Rangers doubled it. But no, BOO BARRY! I hate all cheaters, and I think when a player enters spring training, the very first day, they should test, if anyone's caught, suspend. Do it again at mid season and the end. MLB needs to address the steroid the issue and Bud Selig isn't doing much.

If/When Barry breaks the record...
When Bonds breaks the record soon, one who might benefit by seeing a change in perception and have more people in his corner could be A Rod.

A Rod doesn't get much slack from the press and the resulting fallout leads to a public opinion that isn't always the best.  Being a Yankee doesn't help either.

One could foresee a scenario where public opinion could swing in his favor greatly as those who are dissatisfied with Bonds holding the HR record would begin to pull for him.  If he and the Yanks sever ties following this season and he goes to someone like the Cubs or Angels he might be the benificiary of a large swing of support in his direction.

Epilogue
Also, it is a great shame that Ken Griffey has been injured so frequently over the past 5 or 6 years.  He would be the overwhelming favorite and rightfully so.

Wouldn't it make for great theatre if Bonds AND Griffey were both closing in simultaneously with a kind of Good vs. Evil dynamic involved as they approach The Hammer's coveted mark.

That would be awesome.

bonds away
I dont know I just dont have that big of a problem with steriods. i dont think anyone can say that it hasnt made the game more awe-inspiring. Everyones favorite stat throughout baseball history has always been homeruns. And when it comes to baseball in todays game, the emphasis is on hitting. a player is not considered an impact player if he can just field and has no hitting ablility. but on the other hand someone can make the all star team if they have all hitting skills in the world and cant do anything with a glove.

Its interesting though to see how society reacts to having artificial stimulation. For example take a look at Pink Floyd's album The Wall. At one point in history that was the number 1 best selling album of all time (a record that can be compared to the impact of the home run record for baseball). It was heavily known that the whole Pink Floyd band was heavily under the influence of varous drugs during the production of that album. And i think its safe to say that the influnce of those drugs enhanced the quality of that album to a certain degree, yet no one is complaining or campaigning to put an * next to their name because of this. It is the same with steriods. They enhance the ability of the players to make them better athletes, which in turn makes the game more exciting and watchable.

Now its obvious that this has a hugely negative impact on the youth because in will start to matriculate to younger and younger ages until it becomes an epidemic.  No one wants to see little leaguers hit the ball 350 feet on a regular basis so they can an upper hand to being drafted out of high school. Steriods are already becoming a problem in high schools as more and more schools are starting to test for steriods. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this steriod era and if it can somehow be controlled. I hope so because seeing the homerun record become 1000 home runs just plain sounds exciting to me.
