Making the Team Meter 6: One Week to Go
We're coming down to the final days of spring training with only one week to go. The Braves cut several more players this week, one of them very quitely. Manny Acosta was mercifully and quietly optioned to Richmond last Sunday. Jonathan Johnson made it through waivers and has accepted an assignment to Richmond. He's the kind of guy who serves as a player/coach to many other players, so I'm glad he's staying in the organization. Though, I'm still mystified as to why he was added to the 40-man in the first place. Another guy whose presence mystifies me is T.J. Bohn, who was part of the final round of cuts before the team heads for Atlanta along with Blaine Boyer. Boyer was pitching good enough to make the team, but after missing most of the 2006 season the team likely wants him to get some more innings under his belt before returning to the majors...but he'll be back at some point this season. Oh, and take Tony Pena off of our MTM list and add him to the Royals' list with a green up arrow.
| Player, Position | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kelly Johnson, 2B |

It's looking like he's locked up the second base job. |
| Pete Orr, INF |
![]() |
With Willy Aybar likely starting the year on the DL, Orr is probably Bobby's candidate to take the last utility infield spot. He's doing his part and hitting well this spring. |
| Brayan Pena, C |
![]() |
Pena displayed some power over the weekend, and he's starting to hit now at the end of spring. |
| Martin Prado, INF |
![]() |
He's playing good enough to make the team, but it's just going to come down to wheather or not there are enough spots left. |
| Yunel Escobar, SS |
![]() |
Here's another guy who's hit well enough this spring to make the club, but he's behind several other people. I think he starts the year at Richmond. |
| Corky Miller, C |
|
Pena's hitting a bit more lately, so Corky might be on the outside. |
| Doug Clark, OF |

He's still hitting a ton, but unless another trade is made there is no room on the 25-man roster. |
| Willie Harris, OF |
|
With the spring he's had, it would really be a shame if he didn't make the team. |
| Kyle Davies, RHP |

He's pitching better than he has at any point in his Atlanta career, but may still be blocked by Redman and Cormier. |
| Lance Cormier, RHP |
![]() |
Same as last week from Corier on down. If he doen't make the club as a starter, then at this point, that's a huge surprise. |
| Macay McBride, RHP |
![]() |
After some very shaky early spring outings, he has settled down and been dominant. He should make the club as the LOOGY. |
| Peter Moylan, RHP |
![]() |
He's pitched okay, but hasn't been spectacular. He'll be a part of the Richmond pen. |
| Chad Paronto, RHP |
![]() |
With one of the best springs of any Brave reliever, fans and players alike are expecting big things from the big guy this year. He's in the pen. |
| Phil Stockman, RHP |
![]() |
The injury and then the visa snafu means he'll need more time to get ready. They won't rush him back and he'll start the year at Richmond. |
| Tyler Yates, RHP |
![]() |
He hasn't blown anyone's socks off this spring, but he's probably done enough to make the club. Still, though, he could be on the bubble. |
| Buddy Carlyle, RHP |
|
He is one of the lesser known stories this spring. Every time he's gone out there he's pitched well. Based on his spring stats and performance he deserves to make the team, but is there a spot for him? |
| Steve Colyer, RHP |
![]() |
He's pitched decentish, but I don't think he's pitched good enough to make the club. |
Key:
-- = Chance of making the team is even.
= Chance of making the team is going down.
= Chance of making the team is going up.
