Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Day 3 Thoughts and Rumblings (and Ramblings as it turns out)

Basically, there was a whole lot of nothing going on regarding the Braves today. It seems though that Frank Wren and company are still talking to people and "working the phones" pursing players of interest or opportunity.

There was a lot of chatter about securing our backup catcher spot, with Damian Miller and Sal Fasano being mentioned as free agent options. In yet another comment on DOB's blog, he mentions that the Braves would prefer to trade for a backup catcher and that several options have been discussed. Much like center field, the team also seems completely happy to go into spring training with Clint Sammons, Brayan Pena, and Corky Miller competing for the backup spot. Basically, if we can find a bargain that fits our needs then we'll make the deal, otherwise we're not going to let any talent out of our system.

(Side note:  Salvatore Frank Fasano would be an awesome addition to the Braves, not because he's a good or even decent hitter, but because he's one of the great characters of the game. He comes with an amazing assortment of facial hair and mullet stylings - probably the best since Charlie O'Brien was a Brave. In one of my trips to the Braves clubhouse I heard Brian McCann (on the record) speaking highly of Fasano as a player, and as a character. Good addition if for no other reason than as a sideshow attraction.)

As for centerfield, it seems all the rumors have run dry. Reggie Willits is no longer being discussed (if he ever was), interest in Chris Duffy is tepid at best, and Josh Hamilton is not worth what the Reds are apparently asking for in return. Again, the same refrain is that it will be a spring training competition between Josh Anderson, Gregor Blanco, and Jordan Schafer - which is fine with me.

For more info David O'Brien has a new blog up in which he rambles on for exactly 2650 words - waaaay too long, even for him - and that's before he ever gets to the obligatory posting of the lyrics to an entire song. (Hint to DOB:  Take a page out of the Peter Gammons book and just post the three or four lines of lyrics that are germane to the topic you're writing about.) I know; I've been tough on old DOB this week. I wish we had someone else on the scene that regularly posted updates, but he's the fastest horse in this one horse town. (Right, we have Bowman, whom I prefer, but he has to toe the company line.) Okay, now I'm rambling, but damn man, how many different ways do you have to say the same thing about the Brent Lillibridge situation. I mean, I read that whole thing to find out what exactly?

I've officially digressed. First I call for Sal Fasano, and now I'm attacking our beat writer about his blogging style. This is what happens when there's no trade news.

If you like drafts, the Rule Fiver is tomorrow. Probably won't be much excitement from the Braves standpoint, we'll just find out who we lose - Diory, Dan, Carl, Van, Brad?

I know how you feel.
I'm new to the blogging scene and this is the first time I've actually kept up with the day to day activities of the offseason.
But man, I HATE reading all the rumors surrounding teams like the Yanks, Sox, Mets, Tigers, Dodgers, etc.  Maybe if the Braves brass would up the payroll to the top third instead of middle of the pack like it's been, we could be salivating at the chance of guys like Santana, Haren, resigning Andruw, etc.  But instead we're stuck with finding out who are backup catcher may be.  Oh well, maybe a couple more WS titles would have helped increase that payroll, so I can't complain too much.
With that being said, I do like this lineup, and I'm looking forward to another NL East pennant.
Go Braves!!!

And be a little easier on DOB.  Can't be eating our own like some other teams do ;-)

Prefer Bowman over DOB?
No way my friend, no way.  I feel like I am reading "Braves for Dummies" when I am reading any Bowman articles.  At least I get better inside info from DOB.  If you don't like the lyrics, you can just skip the section like I always do.

That's my own preference though.  Everybody is entitled to have his or her own preference!

The CF situation
Well, now at the moment that we can scratch Dejesus, Willits, Crisp, and Hamilton off the list, I really do not see how duffy is any better than the guys that we have in josh anderson and gregor blanco. The only way I could see us getting duffy is if we perhaps inquire about one of the pirates young starters, and that seems less likely as well. This is really the first time i kind of question why Frank Wren will not try and see if he could get Willits and Hamilton at a reasonable price. Not that I want to overpay for either one of them, but again with the uncertainty of Smoltz, Glavine, and Teixera being in the mold beyond '08, it seems as if we should try to get an established CF to further give us a chance to be a contender next year.

DOB is annoying
I can deal with the Merle Haggard lyrics but I don't need to hear his mini-novellas about traveling.

DOB Blog
His blog is fine, and I don't mind how long it is, but the lyrics have got to go. His taste in music is laughable and no one cares about old Merle Haggard lyrics, sorry.

DOB
I don't find him annoying at all.  As mentioned, he's quick to provide any and all updates about news regarding the Braves, and, unlike many other writers, he's quick to debunk rumors that he's reported when he determines that they are not valid.

As for the lyrics, as someone already mentioned, it doesn't take any time to skip right over them.

Blanco in CF
I've gotta say that I was impressed with what I saw from Blanco last year in AAA. I caught a few games and thought he was solid at least. Not a bad hole-filler if we can't pick up someone a bit better in the offseason.
