Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

On behalf of Gondeee and SB Nation, I'd like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday! Thank you for helping Talking Chop grow.

Martin has done an incredible job of bringing the Atlanta Braves closer to the fans, more so than I could ever have done. Thank you for making this a community where we can talk about the Braves, debate ideas, and discuss the game we love. Just take a look at the comments of the last post and you'll see what I mean. Excellent job. Keep up the great work!

As I'm about to disappear for a day or so, I'd like to leave you with a new question of the day...

PED accusations aside, does David Justice belong in the Hall of Fame?

Here are some highlights of his career:

  • Named National League Rookie of the Year in 1990
  • From 1991-2002, each of his teams advanced to the postseason
  • He provided the Braves a World Series clinching homer in their Game 6 win over the Indians at Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium in 1995
  • Played 15 season, hit .279 with an OBP of .378 and a SLG of .500. He collected 305 home runs and 1,571 hits
So, what do you think?

I do not think so
Justice was a very nice addition to the middle of the Braves, Indians, and Yankees orders during the 90's, but he never had an outstanding period of achievement, although he did have an MVP season in 93.  His .378 OBP and .500 slugging average are very nice numbers, but the lack of hits I think will come back to haunt him.  My case is that if Dale Murphy cannot make it, then David Justice has no chance at all.

Ditto that
Murph's 10 times more worthy than Justice.

Nope
He's not HoF material. I loved the guy as a Brave, and he wasn't a half-bad announcer, but 300 HRs and 1,500 hits does not an HoF career make.

Dale Murphy
Dale Murphy being excluded from the HoF is the 3rd greatest travesty of HoF exclusions, behind Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose. I know people will disagree with me but both of these players deserve to be in the Hall. Pete Rose is for nothing more than his statistics and meaning to the game itself as a player. Shoeless Joe is one of the greatest hitters of all time, and by most accounts, Ty Cobb did much worse things than Shoeless Joe, but he was under a different commish at the time.

Wow
Murphy. Rose. Jackson. One of these things is not like the other...

not even close
Justice doesn't belong. That's the long and short of it. That said -- I'd give him a vote, only so he can hang the 2% showing in his office for his children to see. As tribute. I'd do the same for lots of players, like, say, Brad Radke, who don't belong at all.

does David Justice belong in the Hall of Fame?
Hey, jhamrahi. It's time for you to show up, right? Welcome. As for your question, I don't think so. I search his profile here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Justice to learn the whole story. He is a good player, but maybe at least for me, he could do better. His name has been sited on Mitchell report, though he tried to clear his name, and it seemed that taking HGH is a common thing, sometime it is good for enhancing the performance. But I firmly believe that HGH is a dead killer to smash anyone's career, of course including him.

A fine player, but worthy of the HOF
DJ was a fine player and good guy to have in the clubhouse, but his numbers don't merit HOF consideration. Let's simply compare DJ's numbers to a few others who are not in the Hall and see how he stacks up:
Justice - .279 BA, 305 HR, 1017 RBi
Dale Murphy - .265 BA, 398 HR, 1266 RBi
Jim Rice - .298 BA, 382 HR, 1451 RBi
On the surface, DJ's numbers are slightly lower these the other two, but similar. But when you compare how DJ stacked up to his peers, you'll see he never won an MVP and only finished in the top-5 of MVP voting twice in his career. Murphy was the best player in his league twice and Rice won 1 MVP while finishing in the top-5 6 times. In addition, Murph won 5 Gold Gloves and 4 Silver Sluggers and was a 7-time All Star, Rice won 2 SS and was an 8-time All Star, while Justice won 2 SS and was a 3-time AS.
It is very difficult to compare players of different eras against each other, but you can compare how well a particular player did against his competition. Rice and Murph were greats of their day. Justice was just a really good player. No Hall for DJ!

MVP's are useless
as a way to measure Hall-worthiness. Look at the last two NL MVP's...neither was among the five most valuable players in the league.

Dale's no Hall of Famer, and Justice isn't even close. Dawson and Rice aren't either, though both are at least close. Rock Raines should get in, though...but he probably won't.
