The Santana Conundrum...

It seems as though the next few years are going to be extremely interesting. Smoltzy is getting old and it may be soon that he retires. Tex is up for a new contract at the end of this season and the next few years are ripe with free agent talent, such as Jake Peavy.

So then, do you pay the piper for Santana? He's the best pitcher in the majors and has at least 3 legit out pitches, if not more. Now, the Twins are probably going to trade him sometime soon.

If you're the Braves, do you pony up the goods? At least 3 MLB-ready prospects for the chance to re-sign Santana after that.

One year
I dunno. If we had santana we would be the odds on favorite to win it all next year. And we would have some salary coming off the books after next season with Hampton finally saying good bye, but realistically what is it going to take to get him in a trade? Jones, Reyes, Devine, and a couple more probably. Is it worth that? Maybe.

You'd have to think
that it would take more than that.  I think all those guys will play in MLB...but none of them are really a potential superstar (althoug I have some hope for Jones).  They will absolutely need a prospect that grades out with a huge ceiling.  Looking at all their young starting pitching I imagine they would want some position players.

exactly
and I don't think we have enough of what it takes to get him without absolutely mortgaging the farm as a whole.

To give an idea...
...it would probably cost more than Teixeira did, and remember that he cost a ML ready top hitting catcher, an high potential shortstop and righty pitcher, and two other lefties. The Braves simply don't have that package of players available right now. I mean, we could offer Schaffer, a good mix of projection/polish and some of our ready guys (Lillibridge, Jones, Devine, Reyes), but none of them really project out as more than average cogs in the wheel players. All our remaining impact players are stuck in Rookie/Low A ball.

Price...
...is lower though, seeing how his season was just "very good" rather than "great" or "one of the best ever" like the past few years.

off topic
but just coming over the wire the Phillies have aquired Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett fromt the Astros for Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary, and minor league third baseman Mike Costanzo.  This was reported by ESPN.  Seems like a lot to give up for him.  Bourn is fast and Geory is average, don't know much about Costanzo outside of he was at AA last year and hit 27 homeruns, he is a little old though at 24.

Word?
They traded Bourn? Wow, that's ridiculous.
