Friday Braves Notes

Let's start with Tom Galvine and the daily dose of journalistic musings we will get from now until the day he signs with someone. The Mets have exclusive rights to negotiate with number 47 until November 12th - so remember that date and know that the articles on Glavine to Atlanta will really heat up around then. Now, that doesn't mean that the Braves can't "talk" to Glavine, they just can't talk financial or contract terms (i.e. negotiate). Let's hope the Braves don't repeat the mistake of last year when then apparently didn't even give Glavine or his agent a ring, and he felt shunned and went back to the Mets. Pick up the phone Frank, and give him a call if you haven't already.

The best reason I can come up with for Glavine to come back to the Braves is this; there's really no reason for him to go back to the Mets, and if he can come back to the Braves and help us get back to the postseason or even the World Series, then he may erase any of the bad blood that Atlanta fans may have for him. That would cement his legacy as an Atlanta Braves pitcher, overshadowing just about anything he did in a Mets uniform, save for his 300th win (of course, isn't that all he did in a Mets uniform).

The Tigers should have waited to make the Renteria trade as they recently lost their closer Joel Zumaya to shoulder surgery which was necessary after he injured himself moving out of his house. Keeping the Atlanta-Detroit connection, the Tigers may go after Braves reliever Octavio Dotel, if Atlanta, as they are expected to do, decline his 2008 $5.5 million option. The Detroit Free Press had this to say:

The Tigers tracked Dotel closely before the trade deadline and made an offer to the Kansas City Royals. It was probably just as well that the Royals didn't accept it. Dotel made only five appearances (8.31 ERA) for the Braves before going on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Atlanta seems likely to decline his option for 2008, so he's almost certain to be available. But his durability is in doubt.

They are apparently in on several other free agent closers as well, but they certainly traded away some of their minor league trade bait to us to fill their shortstop need, thus limiting their options when it comes to acquiring a replacement closer.

A possible beat writer / columnist feud might be brewing over at the AJC as beat writer David O'Brien completely dismisses any notion of Ken Griffey Jr. coming to the Braves - the exact opposite of what columnist Terance Moore said yesterday:

Ken Griffey Jr? In a word, no. Braves need someone they can count on for more than 80 games. Besides, if the Reds saw fit to move him from CF, what makes anyone believe the Braves would see fit to move him back there at his age?

Just more proof that Moore is an idiot and should not be published in anything north of a pamphlet.

The man/horse/man who just won't go away, Barry Bonds, says he will boycott the Hall of Fame if they display the ball with the asterisk branded on it:

"I won't go. I won't be part of it," Bonds said in an interview with MSNBC that aired Thursday night. "You can call me, but I won't be there."

"I don't think you can put an asterisk in the game of baseball, and I don't think that the Hall of Fame can accept an asterisk," Bonds said. "You cannot give people the freedom, the right to alter history. You can't do it. There's no such thing as an asterisk in baseball."

Most of you know how I feel about this guy, so is there really any point in saying what a winy little egomaniacal asshole he is. Yes, there is value in saying it, I feel a little better now.

Why don't we move Harris to center and sign Bonds?
Is he trying to persuade the HOF museum not to display the asterisk ball? I don't see where he's going with this.

Bonds
is actually trying to give the Hall of Fame voters yet another reason not to vote for him.  Why waste a vote on someone who disrespects the HOF voters like that?

Zumaya.
How long is he out for?  One site I read 6 weeks, another I read 6 months.

Disregard.
Found it.

My thoughts...
1.  When Glavine became the face of the player's union (not just for the Braves, but for all of baseball), that was it for me.  He was pro strike (so it seemed), and right or wrong, that was it.  The game I loved was to be lost, and he was the horse that kept getting trotted out there to defend it.  No excuse to ruin the game I love, and coming from a player on the team I love, forget it.

Anyway, time has passed, and I honsetly think I would be on the front row giving Glavine a standing ovation if he pitches in Atlanta again.  He's been nothing but a classy individual since his departure, and it would be great to have him back.

2.  Barry Bonds is a big dumb dummy.  Not naturally big, mind you, but big.  The dummy is evidently all natural.

I concur
Your comments echo my sentiments to a "T."  How cool would it be to get back to the World Series with Smoltz and Glavine leading the way?  I guess the dearth of real class in just about any sport these days gives me a whole new perspective on Glavine.

Barry Bond's Balls are Basically as Big as BB's.

Moore
I agree, Terance Moore is a moron. Griffey to Atlanta is a terrible idea. I do remember reading an article he wrote a few months back stating how we should re sign Andruw. He also says Andruw is the reason for all the Cy Youngs from Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. What a complete jackass this guy is. Is he married to the CEO of the AJC or something?

From Foxsports
"LHP Mike Gonzalez (Tommy John elbow surgery in May 2007) is not expected to be ready to pitch until after the All-Star break."

It's after the All-Star break now? I heard he'd be back June-ish.

Nothing new
they've been saying around the All Star Break since the beginning. Yeah it does suck though!
