Offer to Mike Lowell?

I read on mlbtraderumors.com that we made an offer to Mike Lowell.  Where do they think they are going to play him if we somehow do sign him? I know that Chipper is injury prone, but offering someone a 4 year, 10+ million dollar contract to be a back up seems kind of crazy unless you are the yankees. I know we aren't thinking of moving Chipper to the outfield cause his legs may explode if he goes back out there, so why would we do this? Thoughts?

Boston TV station made the report, MLBTR put it into a blog post about Lowell signing with the Yankees and possibly moving to 1B.

AWFUL
I like Lowell, he's a solid player. But he's like 36, he's a decent defensive 3B and this past year was an aberration from the previous 3.

I hope he signs with the Yankees, let them pile it up.

Not that this is necessary
but during the online chat this afternoon, Frank Wren shot down this rumor. Not to mention he used about 6 exclamation marks to describe his answer.

Rumor
I heard a rumor that we could move Chip to first, Lowell to 3rd, and either trade Tex, or put him in LF (He has played there!). I don't see it happening though.

You're right, he's still getting old.

Wren
There was a chat on MLB.com today - and Wren dismissed this rumor.  Considering what he is being offered it seems sort of silly to begin with.
