How Bad: Type B Bad

Andruw Jones continues to screw us when it comes to his 2007 season. We've already parted ways with him, but there was still some hope that a team may sign him before the arbitration deadline and we would get an additional first round pick. Well, not anymore. Andruw's 2007 was so awful that he is considered a "type B" free agent in the Elias rankings that came out today. He may still net us a compensation round pick, which is sandwiched between the first and second round. I guess that's not too bad (it's better than nothing, which is what Octavio Dotel will net us by not even ranking as a type B free agent). We likely won't get anything if Andruw's signing drags on past December 1st, and with Boras now having two "mega-clients" to shop this off-season that is very possible.

In other news:

  • My take on Curt Schilling saying Atlanta was one of the "lucky" teams he would consider going to is that we don't want him or his holier than thou attitude. Can you imagine how badly he and John Smoltz would get along - talk about clash of the egos.
  • On the Atlanta being an option for A-Rod thing that Eric Karabell spew across his "column" the other day - that's a bunch of ignorant bullshit. Karabell mainly writes about fantasy baseball, and this was pure fantasmical idioticness. Most chat board free agent fantasies are more well conceived than that crap.
  • The Elias AL rankings for free agent compensation are here.
  • For a list a free agents, I suggest using the MLBTR list here. For a more sortable list use the one at MLB4U here.
  • And finally, Terence Moore at the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation suggests that the Braves should seek to trade for Ken Griffey Jr.

Moore calls Griffey "baseball's cheapest superstar with a highly workable contract." I have come to expect such inaccuracies from the AJC and especially Moore (who I rarely comment on since the fact that he is allowed to write in any paper offends me). A quick hop over to Cot's Baseball Contracts would have shown Moore that while Griffey is "only" owed $12.5 million in 2008, he also has a $4 million buyout of his $16.5 million salary in 2009. Yes, much of his salary is deferred and the present-day value is apparently only $9 million and some change, but that that just means we'll owe him for years to come, and not just next year. And with the buyout of the big '09 salary, I can't see how he is anywhere near a bargain - especially with his injury history, which I don't really even need to get into do I?

Schill, Smoltz!
"My take on Curt Schilling saying Atlanta was one of the "lucky" teams he would consider going to is that we don't want him or his holier than thou attitude. Can you imagine how badly he and John Smoltz would get along - talk about clash of the egos."

On Baseball-Fever, for kicks, I recently asked who people thought was a greater pitcher: Smoltz or Schilling. Most said Smoltz; I concur.

I'm not sure I'd mind Schilling with the Braves but I doubt it happens. I don't think he'd be a bad man for the clubhouse, tho. I think that's overstated. Especially since he's a phony, re: steroids -- "Oh, Bonds sucks, I hate steroids, screwing with the game!" but he has never put a teammate out there, and I'm sure he's played with a LOT of steroid users. (Especially in Boston.)

So would he get along with Smoltz? I don't know. I'd guess that they would. Would he get along with, say, someone who sucks? Probably not, and he'd embarrass them in the playoffs by refusing to watch for fear that they're going to "blow it" but he'd be a nice addition, until you factor in the price.

I like Schilling a little; I dislike him a lot. Good pitcher, tho., and if he's one of the only realistic options, I'd take him on my team. But there are a ton of pitchers I'd take over him.

Karabell.
You seem to have some sort of a disliking to the man, Gondee.  Never heard you spit hot fire like that before.

Well
It's more of a dislike of ESPN for putting him on the front page in the same space as Gammons and Stark and Olney - the dude should only be on the fantasy page, and even then...

And if he was kidding around, he should have immediately refuted such a statement as "pure fantasy." We as a fan base (I'm talking about all teams) have to get over the fact that not everything that comes out of the mouth of an ESPN columnist should be considered gospel.

True.
But much like the average baseball fan (the Yankee fans who seem to believe A-Rod was a burden the past 4 years, for example) would rather be spoon fed than think for themselves.  And who better to do that than the WWL?

A-Rod
Glad to  know me diary could cause such vitriol!

Also...
...I have a question.  Seeing as how Glavine is a Type A player, if we sign him  we would have to give up our #1 pick and the Mets would get a sandwich pick?  What happens if a team were to sign multiple Type A players?

Just curious, as I am not completely sure how this system works.

Sandwich
If a team signs multiple free agents then the one with the highest Elias score (see the links) is the one whose former team gets the first round compensation, and the other team gets two sandwich picks, I believe. This happed to Atlanta when Furcal signed with the Dodgers. I believe Nomar signed after he did (or someone else), but they had a higher score and that team got LAs first rounder (don't quote me on it, but it sticks in my mind as having happed like that).

this is funny
We're getting as much compensation for Mahay (despite me hoping and praying he doesn't leave) as we would for Andruw.

Question. Would Andruw be the highest paid type B free agent ever?

That high ranking for Tex is making me salivate. God he'd better stay.

Speaking of Mahay
What is the deal with him, is there any word on if he wants to stay, what kind of deal he's looking for, etc.?

Andruw is not a type A free agent but these guys?
These guys are:

Brian Giles 73.258 A
19t Milton Bradley 72.809 A
19t Ken Griffey Jr. 72.809 A
21 Austin Kearns 72.135 A

Unbelieveable. This system is really flawed!!!

Yes
I know that Giles, Griffey and Kearns are not free agents, but mentioned them anyway.

Poor 'Druw...
You can't blame Andruw for his Type B ranking, but rather the absurd ranking system that's used to list these players.  What an absolute joke!  It has a DH who isn't even the best hitter on his own team as the most valueable player; wow!
Come check out my blog 52 Card Pick-up and let me know what you think!

hmm
I don't think Andruw will get signed anytime before December 1st mostly due to the fact that he is fat chipmunk who had a terrible season.

He will definitely get some crazy contract like 4yr/60MIL and that team will not see .500 ever again

Has Moore
ever written something not praising an African American in it? Every time I see a word written by him it is about a lack of African Americans or wanting the Braves to acquire an African American. He is the Al Sharpton of sports journalists.

Moore
Moore is a moron. There is a veritable laundry list of articles written by Moore where sports take a back seat to his personal bravado on pushing minority hires in sports.
