Chip Caray, ugh

Thought you guys might find this article interesting -- I found it in Bill Simmons' links page over at Page 2. I don't really like Chip Caray (he is the worst of the TBS announcers, imo). Apparently, the NY Times agrees.

I have to say, Chip Caray is one of the worst, as proven by this article. Obviously, there are worse (Morgan, Buck, McCarver, Jon Miller come to mind), but while those guys just sound asinine, this article shows that Caray not only sounds dumb, but is factually incorrect as well.

hmm
I usually don't mind Chip .. but he's been really overdoing it in the TBS broadcasts. Every single play is like "OMG! What a play!!! Listen to me yell!!"

An article in the NY Times...
doesn't "prove" anything, especially if it's someone's opinion.  In the NY Times, even if it's supposed to be a factual article, it could be made up out of thin air.

I guessing any changes Chip makes from his usual style have been "suggested" to him by the powers that be.  After all....

THERE IS ONLY ONE OCTOBER!!!!!!!

and it needs to be yelled about in as exciting a fashion as possible.

What?
The Times is a legit newspaper.  Are you thinking of the Post, Brave Dawn?

by Lauren T. on Oct 10, 2007 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
The Times is prob the most reliable paper we have. However, on another note, I hate Dane Cook. I want him to go away very very much.

Um...
The New York Times is considered the countries paper of record.  Did you read the article?   It's not really an opinion when they cite examples of ridiculousness, inaccuracies, misleading reporting, and, frankly, laziness.  If he did any work on his own he wouldn't be so misinformed.  And, yeah, it's the producer's fault too.  Good they're getting Ron Darling, who I've listened to and think is pretty good.

I am aware...
of the "distinguished" record of the New York Times.  I'm also aware that it is a biased, left-wing mouthpiece, which really has nothing to do with Chip Carey, but since everyone seems to think I was talking out of my...uh... rear end, just thought I would mention that.

Ever heard about this?:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayson_Blair

And yes, the Times unfortunately is the country's paper of record... that's why from 1990 to 1994 there was an award-winning magazine devoted to uncovering and correcting the inaccuracies and biases in the Times:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies_Of_Our_Times

Of course I read the article; I would hardly comment on something I had not read.  And the article does not "prove" that Chip Carey is "one of the worst" announcers.  That is a matter of opinion, because it is a subjective decision.  So if you don't like him, don't listen.  He's not my favorite, but I can think of many, many, many who are "worse".

well...
whether you believe it is biased (and i dont), doesnt really matter. We're talking sports here and this particular article cant be slanted left or right, given the subject matter.

Peace!
Didn't say it proved anything.  If you think he's good or bad or great or awful it's all the same to me.  He just was inaccurate.  Many times.

awful
Chip Caray is awful, terrible, and I have no idea why TBS hired him in the first place. Everything was going fine the way it was with Pete, Skip, Don & Joe. Oh god, I'm getting angry now.

yeah
don was one of my favorites...i miss him a lot...

Really?
His over-pronounciation of players names (especially hispanic/Latin American names) makes me physically ill.  I still cringe if I happen to hear him say "Rahfyel Fooorcal"!

I like Chip!
He does a fine job with TBS if you ask me. Some of you just have bad taste!

umm
I'm not meaning to sound rude, but did you read the story? Even if you like his style, the factual inconsistencies are pretty bad...

chip
is no harry and i feel like the author of this article is expecting him to be. i mean chip definitely was not the answer in the booth but having tony gwynn as one of his color guys? cmon that guy is a great hitter but he was never known for his bubbly personality. he better on for the bench than in the booth. this article a little too hard on chip but some of it had merit for sure.

...on another note, i thought joe simpson made braves fans proud. he was great in the booth and i feel he should be a part of the NLCS.

Yo Joe!
I really have a lot of respect for Simpson...I couldn't care less about any of the teams in the playoffs, but hearing him broadcast a game now and then is a cross between very comforting and deeply wrong....he's a Braves man for crying out loud!  But it is very cool to hear him call these games.

by secondbass on Oct 11, 2007 5:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah...
...I really like Joe Simpson also, and would like to hear him in the NLCS.  I also agree that Tony should stick to coaching; I just think his voice sounds weird, plus he just doesn't sound like he's comfortable.

agreed....
tony sounds like the nerd everyone hated in high school
