Fish too much for the Braves

It was a game we weren't supposed to win... and we didn't. We had our Minor League journey-man fifth starter Jason Shiell on the mound, and he pitched like, well, a Minor League journey-man fifth starter - five innings, six hits, three runs. Actually, that's not too bad. Shiell's bid for a win wasn't helped any by the increasingly ineffective pitching of Oscar Villarreal. Villarreal wasn't helped any by a (perhaps nervous about all the trade rumors) Wilson Betemit error.

I didn't get to watch the game, just the feed from MLB's Gameday. Oh well, you can't win every series, but we should at least be beating the Marlins. We are 6-6 against them on the season with six more games to play. To be a contender, we have to start beating up on these young and less experienced teams. We may have been throwing our sixth fifth starter on the season, but we still could have scored some runs for him.

Jeff Francoeur hit his 20th homerun in the seventh inning, a solo shot that couldn't ignite any more offense. No one else seemed to want to hit the ball.

We get Pedro tomorrow night against HoRam. We need a good start to the Mets series. If we can sweep them, then we're back in the hunt for the division. If they sweep us, then we might be out of the hunt for the wild card. This will be a huge series, perhaps the biggest yet this season.

Box Score >>

Florida 6, Atlanta 1 at Turner Field
Florida Record: (47-53)
Atlanta Record: (48-53)

Winning pitcher - Scott Olsen (9-4)
Losing pitcher - Jason Shiell (0-2)

I demand a writing credit for the blatant theft of my observation about Betemit's error possibly being due to his anxiousness over the trade rumors.  Go Met's!

New Yorkers
I'd give you a tip of the cap if you weren't affiliated with that particular team from New York. Go Braves, beat the Mets!

Not Good
No panic...but not good. Gotta protect the house better than that coming off a big road trip. This isn't going to be like the division race, where you can pick up 3-4 games in a week. A game/game-and-a-half a week is going to be more like it the way everybody's bunched up.

Actually, for my own mental health, I think I'm going to wait until we're back at .500 before I even look at the standings again.

Totally Right
I am with you 100% Piff. I've been saying for several months now, we can't look at any sort of wild card or division race until we are solidly at .500 and above. Once we reach that, then we can start talking about the post-season. You can read my posts and I don't mention the wild card race like Fox does every f'ing night - it's not relevant yet. If we're not an above .500 ballclup, a winning ballclub then we're not in the race.

Yes, we need to play better at home. Our record on the road is just about the same as our home record, and that is not the history of this club. We seem to slack off at home this year, like we let up and play with less intensity - it's weird. It's definitely something I'm going to explore this weekendend while I'm at the park with the press pass.
