June 22nd: Good News

For each game that we lose for the remainder of the season, I'm going to try to post some "Good News" about the game, because I think it's safe to say that we know what is going wrong.

Horacio Ramirez- Pitched a great game, 6 2/3 innings, 1 ER

Andruw Jones- Has broken out of his semi-slump, now has a 5-game hitting streak and is approaching .290, up from .267 a week ago. Went 3-4 with a run scored.

Kenny Ray- Got into a little bit of hot water at the end of the 9th, but pitched an overall solid 1 2/3 innings of relief, and should have gotten the win or a save

Wilson Betemit- Got the start at 2b and did well- a double and a walk. More remarkable for getting the start at leadoff than the actual performace.

Matt Diaz- Had a clutch pinch hit in the 9th. He continues to impress and deserves more playing time.

There you have it folks. Some good things to concentrate on for this loss.

I know people are down on LaRoche, and while he only went 1-4 and is hitting .239, he made at least two incredible digs at first base on throws that were in the dirt. They helped preserve double plays that otherwise might not have made the game as close as it was.

Does anyone know if there is a fielding stat that deals with "digs" at first base. Or balls that are in the dirt that a first baseman catches verses letting it go for an error or a missed play.

I seriously doubt there is. Although Adam has a sub-par fielding percentage, I think he is an above-average first baseman. He is really good at digging out some pretty bad throws, as evidenced last night.
