Spring Invitees

It was a rather unglamorous list of players the Braves invited to attend Major League Spring Training yesterday: RHP Buddy Carlyle, LHP Steve Colyer, OF Doug Clark, INF/OF Willie Harris, C Iker Franco and C Corky Miller. Good old Corky!

The two catchers are just targets for all the pitchers who will be in camp. Doug Clark is a four-A outfielder who would seem to be a Matt Diaz-lite type player. He has had cups of coffee each of the last two years with both Bay area teams and does have some decent speed which he has cultivated the last several years.

I talked about Colyer in a previous post, as well as Corky and Iker (that sounds like it should be some sort of bad sitcom on CBS; "tonight you won't believe what happens on Corky and Iker", okay maybe not).

Buddy Carlyle is a guy who was with Roger McDowell at triple-A Las Vegas in 2005. He is another Minor League four-A player with several cups of coffee in the Majors.

Willy Harris has had low to moderate success as a Major Leaguer, with his best year coming in 2004 when he posted a .343 on-base percentage playing second base for the White Sox. He will be given an outside chance to win the second base and leadoff job, and I just don't know what to think about that...

"unglamorous"
is right on. does this mean brian jordan won't be fighting for a spot on the roster this year? but "he really is a good clubhouse influence, and he still can play good ball when healthy...". yeah right.

Wow
I honestly have never heard of any of those guys save corky miller, and him I only remember because, honestly, his name is corky.

Willie Harris
I happen to like the invite of Willie Harris.  If nothing else he provides some compition for Pete Orr. On the upside if Pendleton can fix his swing and he can produce like he did in the minors he could become a legit candidate for the leadoff spot.  Although I think he is MUCH better suited to LF then 2B.  You never know; Ryan Freel bounced around a couple teams the same way before catching in Cinci.

Noise
Anyone else hearing this Melky Cabrera Noise where we send Laroche to Pitt, they send gonzales to the Yanks and we get melky. I like mely and all. I'm a little higher on him than most, but laroche seems like a lot to give up for him. I would probably do laroche for Gonzales strait up, just because he's an elite player at his position. But is not, and does not project to be an elite lead-off hitter nor LF.

yikes
I can't believe we're even considering laroche for melky. who is melky other than a yankee-castoff? his  big league numbers are unimpressive. i hope JS has enough sense to lay off this one. by the way, if the  pirates wouldn't accept a AL for MG trade then, why would they do it now, with the yankees involved? the yankees would be getting a steal: Mike G for Melky G
